Good find rb, and the bolded is still lost on this board.

I have seen posters state categorically that DZ holds not much value on his own. :shakehead

Dreger was asked if the relationship wasn’t that good between Del Zotto and Alain Vignealut and said, “correct. Alain Vigneault took a bit of a swipe, or at least was very honest in answering a question about why Michael Del Zotto isn’t playing consistently for the Rangers today. He said that Del Zotto isn’t playing consistently enough and that sort of boils it down. The problem that Del Zotto has in the Rangers lineup is that he is playing as a third pairing guy behind the likes of McDonagh and Marc Staal on the right side so Glen Sather has been making calls and he has been receiving calls on Del Zotto. The Ottawa Senators, as we reported last night on Insider Trading (below) are among the teams who have shown interest in Del Zotto but the Rangers need to get something back in return and because the fact that he was a high pick and there is still upside in him they are probably asking for a whole lot.â€

Adding a D in a trade is expensive. The Rangers haven't gone down that road. They draft their D(Staal,DZ) or trade for them when they are young like with McDonagh and Moore. Or they sign an undrafted player to an AHL contract like they did with Girardi or pick up a D on the scrapheap like Stralman who becomes a good player. They did that with Rozsival after the 2nd lockout.

Elliotte Freidman reported the Rangers and Ottawa had the DZ discussion this week and nothing materialized.

AV and Ulf Samuelsson really like John Moore

AV called Moore "a gem" in the first episode of AV Squad on MSG. "A lot of potential".

Samuelsson's son Philip played in the USHL/Chicago Steel in 08-09. He was teammates with Moore and Philip stayed at Moore's house. Moore is from Chicago. The relationship was there before Ulf came to the Rangers.

They like Moore over Del Zotto.

That much is obvious. They like Moore's ability to join the play and cover for mistakes with his skating.

I like Kane, but it's Evander Kane, not Patrick Kane. Why are we trading our almost PPG arguably best forward at 21 or 22 for Kane? Why are Rangers fans so willing to trade their prospects and young players? Remember the dark ages when we would do that all the time and Rangers fans would complain about it? Do you want to get back to that? (I'm aware that half this board was born before the lockout so it's almost a rhetorical question).

Evander Kane would be a coup for the Rangers. He is literally exactly the player they would, I'm sure, love to add. Kreider, Kane, Hagelin LW moving forward? Unbelievable.

Young power forward with a great shot in a bad situation obviously.

Not going to happen unfortunately.

OMG if they could pry Kane out of Peg for the likes of DZ + a pick or something I would strip down to my boxers and run a marathon around town in 20 degree weather.

Wouldn't be surprised if Slats and AV still kind of are evaluating MDZ. Ie, that no asking price really has been established. I am sure there has been curtosy calls, but maybe not more than that.

MDZ had really been a disappointment this year. But like he showed last night, he got a lot of hockey in him. AV has set the bar for him and MDZ knows what it will take to play in NY. I don't think Slats is setting a price now based on an unknown, ie not really knowing how MDZ will respond. In a couple of weeks, we will know a lot better.

The only unknown is how well does DZ adjust to the right side. Sather and the rest of the league knows how he can play on the left side on the top 4. And the sample size is large enough.
I do however agree with your overall point that Sather is in no rush to trade DZ. There will be plenty of opportunities to do so and at the price he wants.

To be clear, the article you link to doesn't actually say that. It said that AV likes Moore's skating, and he likes him long term (which could mean any of a number of things). It said nothing about a comparison between the two players as actual hockey players. Frankly, based on minutes, the opposite of what you said seems to be true. In the 18 games that Moore and MDZ have both played, Moore has only skated more minutes than MDZ three times. That's not just from the beginning of the season, either. MDZ got more time than Moore in both of his games back after the benching.

I just wanted to clarify, because the way this was posted made it seem like the linked source stated what you wrote as a truth, and not as your opinion.

I'd buy an Evander Kane Rangers jersey, a one way plane ticket to Winnipeg and I'd do the boxer shorts marathon thing up there.

I think MDZ, Miller and a pick/prospect is our "go-to" package and we can get something good for it, I'm just not sure what's on the market. It's not enough for Kane/Yakupov and it's too much for Matty Moulson (especially since he's out of contract next year), but that kind of selfish player fits like a glove here IMO.

Did anyone else get that impression? Just you.

What does AV say about DZ?

I actually prefer John Moore over Del Zotto at this point myself. One reason I can see him progressing as a player--something I don't see much from Del Zotto--another he's bigger and stronger and another he's a much better skater.

I also think he's been a more dangerous offensive player than DZ this year. He often takes off with the puck and attacks the enemy's net. There's two goals and there are a few posts.

I wish Staal could've tried the right side.

MDZ had some really good stretches at 2nd pair LD when Staal was out.

I think I'm more interested in retaining Stralman than Girardi.

LOL at people packaging Kreider in a deal for Kane. Kreider has been our best forward production wise. And better than many forwards in the NHL.

Kane can disappear at times. The one thing he does do is shoot a lot and throw his weight around. I think if he joined a line with Stepan or Richards as his center he would have more success. WPG would have to retain some salary in a trade.

All the more credence to not having a deal in place, but exploring their options. Team is still a .500 team with inconsistent players expected to fit into roles. The way I look at it, the Rangers are three spots away from finding a consistent set of lines who can fill in roles.

Hagelin-Richards-Nash

Puck possesion and speed. Hags buys Nash time and space. Rick gets Nashty with time and space. Richards just has to stay consistent and do what he's doing.

Kreider-Stepan-Zuccarello

The line isn't a fluke, and definitely effective, showing signs of chemistry. Wouldn't call all the components proven commodities but as long as they play with a point to prove then that's where it's at.

X-X-Callahan

Selke calibur winger, check. Two-way players that raise his game, and give the team a top tier two-way line. Nope. Brassard-Pouliot count as indifference makers out there. Not winning with them.
Boyle-Moore-Dorsett

They've been really good as a unit. The Rangers lost the last two years in the playoffs because they got beat by the other team's 4th lines. NJ with Carter-Gionta-Bernier and Bos with Paille-Cambell-Thornton. Having a high calibur secondary checking unit as your 4th line will do wonders.

MCD-G
Staal-X
Moore-Stralman

Stralman has been great, but no one is going to complain about having an elite level top 4. DZ locked it down the last couple of years with Staal out there, but he too has been inconsistent alongside the French connection. I hope he gets his head screwed on straight and stops being a waifer out there like the top ten round busts up front. There's more hope that DZ rounds out, rather than the Brass or Poo turning into all world checkers.

Ideally Staal lines up with a top 4 RH offensive defensive with some grit. Maybe Staal lines up on the right side and Moore becomes a top 4 player, maybe Stralman picks up the offense, maybe DZ. But I think the team stands more of a chance to get two third line upgrades (whether internally or externally), than that elusive top 4 RHD.

Think we know what we're getting here by now. Great job Benny Allaire!
Lots of this post to like!
Wish, and wish is probably the right word, Brass and Poul. were replaced with a Ryan O'Reilly type to toughen up the center position. Richards almost needs two Lucic types to create enough room on the ice to work his magic.

Just get the feeling the + would be too costly. Also saw once that a DelZotto for Bieksa trade was being talked about, which for the short term, would be intruiging.

I think the Rangers rumor mill steam is going to die down now.

I think really the deriving factor for all of it was Nash's uncertainty. Was he going to come back any time soon. Would the team continue to tailspin? Would the offense remain as stagnant as it was to begin the season?

There has been not only noticeable improvement by the team, but they actually look dominant again.

I remember during the preseason and beginning of regular season people advocated for the selling off of our best players for a rebuild.

Now, even with noticeable dominance, people still try and argue that there are glaring holes with this team.

If anything, we are missing 1 player to balance out our third line. That player should be Miller, but he's clearly not ready yet. He's got the speed, energy, and defensive responsibility to fit great on that line but he's been making too many mistakes (which are to be expected with rookies).

Pouloit isn't going to fix that line. His game comes and goes whenever he pleases.

Pyatt isn't going to fix that line. He's too slow to keep up with Brassard and especially Hagelin.

I think AV finally found his dominant 4th line. Boyle, Dorsett, and Moore have been sustaining forechecks and actually creating chances as a tandem.

We are missing 1 player. Maybe it's Jesper Fast? Pyatt will get the go around. But he's not the solution. Kristo? Maybe he'll get a mid season call up.

Knowing Sather, and having a gut feeling we'll be a top contender by the trade deadline, he'll trade for a vet with decent production to complete the lines ala Antropov a couple years back. Fast and Kristo might get chances before a trade is made, Miller may even get a second shot too. But Pyatt and/or Pouloit won't be in the top 9 going into the home stretch of the season.
