What? 3 First rounders + for an uncoachable malcontent who could pack up and head to the KHL? What has he done at the NHL level to fetch that kind of return?

What has he done is not the point. It's what he has the potential to do. Overwhelm them with borderline prospects like hrivik and such that every team has is not going to get it done. If this is a guy you want it's going to cost a lot.

there is absolutely no chance that yakupov is dealt for a mcdonagh caliber player.

Exactly the same way that I see it. You can't trade proven NHL all stars for a former struggling first round pick.

If a trade will be done, it will be around Del Zotto. What other pieces are going back? Only the magician knows.

Remember when everyone thought we'd get Nash for, like, a second round pick and pocket lint? Because we "had them on the ropes" or something? And then we gave them a good package in return because, who knew, premium talent has value?

We don't even "have Edmonton on the ropes" using that definition because he'll go to 95% of teams in the league with a goofy smile on his face. Nail Yakupov probably leaves EDM this season, but unless there's ridiculous Russia drama and/or he acts in a way that's completely toxic, he leaves for premium talent - closer to McDonagh than Girardi, and certainly not Del Zotto.

Remember when Jackets fans thought they were getting king's ransom for Nash.

Anaheim's not gonna blow up there team for Henrik. Rangers aren't trading Henrik. It's still a long way to go but the Islanders are struggling and the Penguins while good don't look invincible either so if the Rangers continue to play well, this deal gets done and the fears that Henrik may "jump ship" to a team with more high end talent may not occur.

Now onto Nail; don't want him unless the price is right. No way Miller goes the other way, AV seems to like him already and he's a plumber who can play pretty well in any situation. Don't trade Skeji, it's guys like him who help keep a team competitive for years to come. Rangers need to start restocking prospects. Most of their picks are either playing in the AHL or at least two years away at earliest. After Duc/Buch/Boo, what real forward prospects does this team have left in the juniors or NCAA? Tambaleni is a four year project pick, ditto for Fogarty. If Neil Smith doesn't make the Verbeek trade and picks Jay McKee with the first he dealt to Hartford, that would've made the Rangers D very different in the late 90s/early 2000s.

They can't trade Brassard for Yak either. Brass for as inconsistent as he's been still has more points and is better defensively than Nail. It will KILL the center depth (Boyle as #3 center again......joy) and Brass might just be the kind of guy that plays better in a series vs. one team over and over again.

Also there's no guarantee that Nail starts lighting the lamp here. Just because NY has a Russian section in Brooklyn doesn't mean Nail's gonna get Lion-O esque powers and turn into Ovechkin. Doesn't work that way.

Also I watched parts of the Pack games over this weekend. Allen is not ready yet. He's got potential but if they trade Del Z they better have a replacement or else this turns into a Bickell 2.0 situation all over again.

Rangers have a good thing going and will be getting Nash back soon hopefully. They also have 3-4 guys in the minors who could be ready at some point this season. A guy like Kristo or Fast if they gave him PP time can possibly change a second PP unit.

They don't need to make a splash, just the right move. Add more grit and maybe a righty trigger man on the PP. If Simmonds is available, inquire about him.

Someone here mentioned Tom "1980s villain face" Gilbert from the Panthers who is a righty and soon to be UFA. They should be able to get him for a similar package that got them McCabe a few years ago.

I always point this out but Rangers pick up Brian Rolston off waivers at the 2011-12 deadline, maybe he helps their PP enough to get them to the Cup Finals (he had 3 points in 7 games for Boston). Rangers pick up J. Jokinnen off waivers last year and they don't sign Poulliot.

Not always the name or the style, it's about the substance of a move.

The only thing is, whatever package we can put together that might be our best chance at landing Yakupov, someone else will offer more. If we try to outbid I think we lose more than we want to.

If I were Edmonton, and was looking for someone on the Rangers to acquire for Yakupov, the piece that I'd hone in on is Marc Staal.

Yak is not yielding McD or Girardi.

Get off of it people.

Think Edmonton is in a position of power? Yak can essentially choose where he wants to go. He can play the "go back to russia card". Radulov did it and was still accepted back in the NHL. Zherdev had a similar problem. Nino with the Islanders.

MDZ +. Now is Sather willing to let go of that... that's really the question.

Yak will be gone by deadline.

He is easily getting UFA Girardi. We'd do it in a heartbeat. Maybe regret it later, but still do it.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. And Yaks for Staal is a bit low value-wise (for us of course). While its hard for EDM to add all that much more.

I am also really not quite sure if there is that much else I would want from EDM outside the core pieces...

If we move Staal, we will want the value of what he is worth at the top of this game etc. If EDM get him, they will want a slight discount atleast for Staal's concussion problems etc. If EDM move Yaks, they will want to get paid for his potential. Anyone that gets him will want to get a discount for the KHL factor etc.

Staal and our 1st for Yaks and EDM 1st could potentially pay of pretty darn well for us (EDMs pick looks top be a top 3-5 pick. It could even become the top pick next summer..). We could then deal a forward for offensive minded younger RD that we could bring up behind Girardi and Strålman...

Yak is horrible on the back check and worse in the D...

It's gonna be a gamble for whoever gets him..

Larionov needs to keep his mouth shut. The player cries to the agent and the agent makes noise. It always seems to happen with the Russian guys. Everyone knows the names of the Russian player agents. These guys are trouble. Its not a racist remark. Larionov wants to talk with Eakins. You guys want this nonsense on the Rangers? :)

In 17 games this season, Yakupov has just two goals and is adjusting to first-year coach Dallas Eakins' system after breaking in under Ralph Krueger as a rookie. Last season, Yakupov scored 17 goals, including 11 goals in 14 April games. The strong finish raised expectations for this season, expectations that haven't been reached so far.

Larionov said he'd like to sit down with Eakins, whom he doesn't know. He said he already has had conversations with Edmonton general manager Craig MacTavish and made it clear that they would be open to a trade if the Oilers have soured on the forward.

"I asked Craig, I said, 'If you guys [are] not happy with him or you have no room for him ... we're willing to make a move. Any team,' " Larionov said. "That happens and that's part of life. Let's move on."

Eakins told the Edmonton Journal last week that Yakupov isn't going anywhere.

Its not the agent's place to take to the coach about the player.

I wanted nothing to do with yakupov before and I want even less to do with him now the dudes a prototypical Russian nutcase, if he came to NY brooks would be contacting larionov on a daily basis to try nd stir **** up. If his agents this involved now just wait until someone from one of the khl teams gives him a contract offer for big bucks, then where do u think his agents going to be pushing for a move too?

Pouliot + Skjei + MSC for Yak. if it's not enough, it's not enough. The other teams can have him and deal with the drama

To piggy back on what rb posted, Here is former Oilers beat reporter Robin Brownlee’s take on it at Oilers Nation:
Whatever conclusion you draw, it’s difficult for me to believe Larionov didn’t know exactly what he was saying. I’m guessing he said it with the blessing of his client. Leverage? Sending a message? Or is something already broken that can’t be fixed? I don’t know. While ‘open to a trade’ doesn’t necessarily equate to ‘I want to be traded,’ it’s just a degree or two short. Demanding a trade now, given how poorly he’s played, would be the epitome of entitlement — blaming everybody else but himself for the situation Yakupov finds himself in.

As skilled as he is on the attack, Yakupov earned his way onto the fourth line. He’s the worst minus player in the NHL, and he’s earned most of those minus marks the ugly way, by making mistakes on goals against. He’s got the highest rate of mistakes on goals against of anyone on the Oilers.

Trade Proposal: Rangers and Oilers

To Rangers: Jason Labarbera
To Oilers: Arron Asham

Oilers have 3 goalies on one-way contracts. They have Richard Bachman and two other goalies in the minors already.

They have the same $1,000,000 cap hit expiring this summer. Labarbera would carry the same $75,000 cap hit as Asham in the minors. Oilers need MOAR toughness.

This a good depth move. Hartford needs a solid netminder.

It may just be that Yakupov doesn't turn out to be the elite player that some people projected. He dominated the OHL but these were kids his own age and he's not a big guy. He wants to be a goal scorer with the minimum amount of board work or back checking. Kind of reminds me a little bit of Pat Falloon--a 2nd overall by the Sharks a while back who made a big splash in his first NHL season and it was all downhill from there. Questions we should ask is where would he fit in the current lineup?-and what we would expect from him?- because the Rangers are not the dysfunctional organization that the Oilers are. Our forwards are beginning to slot in to roles. What would Yakupov's role be? and if he couldn't handle it then it might mean a trip to Hartford in the meantime--and how would he handle that? We've seen Kreider struggle to find a role--it could happen to Nail as well. He's struggling on a bad team--so what happens if he continues to struggle on a good team?

The Oilers need D--I'd be willing to gamble MDZ for him out of the glut of our left side. Trading Staal instead is more problematic as he is actually a proven defensive presence. I don't know if I would move Staal for him. I think that would be a much larger gamble and I think that such a move would be more likely to make us a weaker team this year.

You definitely have a point.

But somewhere along the line you gotta ask yourself who the normal agent to a NHL player is loyal too, himself through keeping a good contact with GMs around the league or his players.

I mean, EDM could be up to something interesting for sure. But its moving along darn slowly. And will Yaks always have to take a back seat to a bunch of other spoiled kids infront of him who are just as suspect as he is and needs just as much tuturing?.. They have gone through, like what, 157 coaches the last 3-4 years etc.

What do I know, but I do wonder sometimes why some kids who clearly are in a environment where they never will get a shot to accomplish anything, than to bring in a few dollars extra to an extremel cheap owner, just don't work harder to be moved. Its a sliding scale for sure, but lets say you came to the Islanders in the late 90's, do you want an agent that keeps his mouth shut or an agent that gets you the hell out of Dodge asap no matter how many feet the agent gotta step on? EDM still has not accomplished anything, and they got a GM who has a horrible track-record the last years and seem pretty darn clueless when it comes to managing his team.

Igor Larionov is the opposite of Carl Lindros. I wouldn't be that worried to have a player with him as an agent.

When I see a kid that is happy to play for a team that don't wanna compete, it sometimes tells me more when the kid is staying put than if he would raise a stink.
