What is the fascination with Phaneuf? Burke is Calgary is a big fan. The Leafs want to keep the player. Newport is driving hard bargain. No surprise there. Let Newport get their client a dream contract from one of those 2 teams.

We'll have cap space this summer. Gotta spend it somewhere!! :sarcasm:

It's honestly laughable to think that this current version of Dan Girardi is better than Phaneuf.

The 2010-12 Girardi is as close as Girardi got or ever will get to Phaneuf's level.

That said, I still wouldn't pay Dion the money he's looking for.

St.Louis Blues called up Dmitrij Jaskin...

maybe a showcase for a future trade..

http://blues.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=697127

if Rangers make a trade with Blues, Jaskin better be included... has size skill and is only 20 years old. he is the type of player teams part with at the deadline. if Girardi was dealt to the Blues, maybe something like Cole and Jaskin for Girardi.. Cole is a LD but 24 and adds some grit and toughness to the blueline..

Jaskin isn't bad. I have his hockey card :laugh: If G gets dealt, I want to see the most effective return humanly possible.

Darren Dreger made an appearance on TSN radio today and had this to say;

Dreger "I wouldn't be at all surprise if once the trade freeze lifts NY makes that trade and Del Zotto goes to Ottawa"

This scares me, because Ottawa just doesn't have pieces we could use. And the ones they do BM isn't okay with parting with.

Well it'd better be for something other than the garbage Ottawa was rumored to have offered up last time.

Gryba, Weircoch, and Condra? :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

I want Cody Ceci.

"That trade"? What trade was he referring to? If it was that group of crap they allegedly offered before, I may very well give up on this team for good.

Dreger is getting to be just about as bad as Garrioch though.

I agree here, Dreger's been spewing a lot of garbage lately. But he's still a reliable source.

I didn't listen to it so I don't know what he was referring to, I'll go look for it.

id love Ceci but i doubt Sens move him ..id want Zack Smith back in a deal especially with Boyle as an UFA and who knows if Lindberg will be 100% ready by next season. its better to find a replacement now..

id consider this:

Zack Smith, Curtis Lazar, Matt Puempel, Mark Borowiecki to Rangers

Del Zotto, Brassard and Boyle to Senators..

Rangers get some youth in Puempel and Lazar (former first round pick), some nastiness on defense in Borowiecki and some grit and PK ability in Smith 25 years old younger and grittier and can score more than Boyle...

Rangers supposedly inquired about Stone and Methot as well, so who the hell knows what a deal would look like.

Though some Sens fan with a "source" seems to think it would be Michalek and Gryba for MDZ and a cap dump. That would be hilariously bad for us, unless the Rangers had a plan of flipping Michalek to another team for something better. We already have a gritty 6/7 guy in Falk, who is considerably better than Gryba, and Michalek is a broken down 20-25 goal scorer that is up for Group III at the end of the year.

As much as it makes me nauseous, I think Milan Michalek would be coming back. He's having an awful season, and he's too expensive for what little he's been bringing. Also isn't Melnyk looking to make pay cuts, again?

If we are getting better players, why does Ottawa, a team on a budget, do this deal unless we retain salary? What does and RFA like Del Zotto and Brassard give them? Brass would be their 3 as well, behind Spezza and Turris. Del Zotto is top 4 for them, but will he ask for 4 milli on plus from them, once again, a budget team? Zach Smith, a controllable asset for a UFA to be Boyle? Two first round forward prospects a budget team needs?

If Ottawa and the Rangers make a deal it will be NHL player for NHL player. We may have to retain salary to make it happen. These trades where teams looking for a shakeup where we get prospects will not happen. Only contenders deal prospects for players like this or picks. Ottawa last I saw had less points than us. Why do they deal future assets when that will be what they try and bring in if they sell off pieces?

I see this as well, but the change of scenery may work for him. He can skate, shoot, but is injury prone. I could see him as part of a deal with the Sens. Size and speed. Question is Del Zotto worth giving up for him and maybe another asset?

You can only retain salary on current contracts, as far as I know. Retaining salary on any of our guys we're likely to see traded won't help unless we're dealing with a team harder against the cap than us.

Michalek would be another stop on the road back to the dark ages. His best years are behind him.

Look at teams that want to make a run this season and try and pull off a deal for a young player not in their NHL roster we would give a shot to. Connelly is one. I'd look at Colorado if they want defense. Trying Minnesota, who lack depth at the NHL level may be good. Kings are trying to move Trevor Lewis and Clifford. I'd try and acquire them. Bottom pieces who can skate and have size. Waive Pyatt and bring in one of them. Look to SJ or Anaheim as well. West teams who want to win now will be looking to add. The west is so deep. They will all be looking to buy. Not many sellers. We could dish off some pieces, bring in others and still compete. San Jose did it last season trading Clowe and Handzus, and promoting from within. They became better because of it. Try and model that.

I wouldn't mind taking back Michalek. As long as the centerpiece of the trade is Lazar or Ceci. Michalek would give us the LW depth we've been needing. It's not like we'd be re-signing him at the end of the season.

Believe it or not, most teams are. A lot of teams are using LTIR to get under the cap. We have some space and have gained some space by denoting players and retaining cap each day.

The Rangers can't be giving up a D with an equal D coming in return. Staal is out with the concussion. He had set back last week after increasing his workouts. He worked out again and felt better. Skated in the last two days. No target date for his return. Especially for another group III. The Rangers don't need anymore players in the last season of their contracts.

Taking him back is one thing, but I doubt the Sens would consider him a throw in unless they were absolutely desperate to cut salary. Michalek and Ceci for MDZ and Pyatt would be something I could get behind, but I doubt it would be well received in Ottawa.

Who is playing for this team next season? It can't be same tired old plan. The Garden teams like making the same mistakes.
