Jones the saviour. The kids does not hit, does not score and does not play the tough minutes.
He is pretty much 3rd pairing in NSH with Ellis playing 2nd pairing RD behind Weber.

I would take Hamonic over Jones every day of the week. Fits in perfectly in just about every way including age and salary.

I'd prefer Hamonic over Jones for his age and ability to log tough minutes, but Jones is putting up very crooked numbers facing easy opposition, he's someone showing every sign that he can take an increased workload. Some people expect that means 1st pairing icetime which I'd say is a mistake, but he can likely suit up against 2nd pairing opposition and hold his own. Jones has a talent set that makes it very understandable why some on here are so high on him, but we have a lot of potential as it is, we need more people who can just flat out get the job done and Hamonic is such a player.

EDM has put enough stock into young up and coming players becoming "elite" since this rebuild x3 began. Jones would just be another on the list. Pass.

If we're going for a #1 dman, it's going to be a current #1 dman. No if's and's or but's.

Teams don't trade #1s. Only way you can get one is drafting or taking a chance on a guy like Jones.

Teams don't trade away bonafide #1 centres though, especially in the new era of salary cap hockey. The deals don't happen because of inability to make the money work. Now more than ever maybe it's paramount for teams to draft and develop their own. NHL GM's are handicapping themselves and the league by handing out these ludicrous contracts to free agents.

But there are fleeting moments where opportunities arise, and the stars align perfectly.. I think the Oilers will be in this situation shortly and a blockbuster or potentially even two in the next couple years could be possible.

If Jones is available, which I'm sure he is, you don't even think twice about it and try to make it happen. I take a "chance" on the player. Nurse and Jones could be dynamic together.

Florida has Barkov and Bjugstad in the middle. Add in Vincent Trocheck who has 20 points in 33 games and it is hard to see why they would move Ekblad for a center.

What about Eberle+?....or is Ekblad 'unmovable' from Florida's perspective.

Ekblad had a bit of a slow start but he has had 13 points and is a +8 in his last 20 games. This kid may be one of the most valuable players in the league as far as trade value is concerned. If you want him, the deal needs to start with Hall not Eberle. There is no reasonable + that I could see that would get Florida to bite.

The one thing that is very apparent. Cherelli has very little to work with outside of picks or moving one of hall, Mcdavid, Ebs, nuge, and Leon.

I don't think Hall or Leon are going anywhere, and adding McDavid as potential trade bait is blasphemy.

Chiarelli has a lot of work to do between now and the start of next year. Finding a defenseman who is better than anything the Oilers currently have, replacing Schultz with a better PP option, adding 2-3 top 9 wingers with size, aggression, and defensive reliability. I'd say we need to change out 5 players at minimum to become a playoff contender.

With nothing but some picks to work with and maybe nuge and Ebs as legit trade bait.

I'd add Reinhart and Yak as potential chips too. Where does Reinhart fit on a team with Klefbom, Nurse, and Davidson already on it? Yak needs to put up some numbers when he comes back if the Oilers are going to get anything of value for him.

Signing a UFA like Brouwer, Ladd, Eriksson, Lucic, or Okposo would make it a lot easier to fill the rest of the roster via trade.

Wonder if the Sharks would have any interest in Mark Fayne.

DeBoer has experience with him. We would have to take back salary to make it work.

Then again, the Sharks already have 5 D-men locked up for years at above 3M+

Only forward they could move that would make sense from a salary standpoint is Raffi Torres.

We are a playoff contender now. Give Nurse/Klefbom another year of development and have a little bit of luck injury wise in our top 6 and I think without adding a player we have a very good shot at the playoffs next year. We need to add one top 2 and one top 4 defender and we are going to start looking like a Stanley Cup contender.

We all have this perfect team paradigm that changes depending on who wins the Stanley Cup, but the truth is that every team has its warts and every team has its holes, its the teams that learn to play and overcome those(good coaching) that really become the top teams.

IE)
Power Winger(Nash) Big #1 Center(Toews) Offensive Dynamo(Kane)
Offensive Winger(Sharp) Two-Center(Kesler) Two-way Forward(Hossa)
Two-way winger w/ top 6 potential(Niederreiter) Two-way Center(Sobotka)Two-way Winger(Frolik)
Physical W(Martin) Faceoff Specialist(Gordon) Physical Pker(Hendricks)
#1 D(Keith) #2 D(Hamonic)
#3 D(Sekera) #4 D(Jones)
#5 D(Stuart) #6 D (Vatanen)
#1G(Rinne)
#2G(Darling)

And we want all of this under the cap, on perfect contracts to go along with perfect depth in the AHL, and hitting on at least one late round pick every year, never missing on our first and seconds.

What team has this? Noone. Some teams come close, like Chicago, like Tampa, but noone has it all. If we can somehow find a way to add a top 4 defenseman and one of Klefbom/Nurse become a 1/2 defender, we are pretty much as close as any other team in the league to that perfect paradigm. Does it mean we will win a Cup? Not necessarily.

Chiarelli has to do something when the trade freeze lifts. Anything. Lose a trade if you have to.

I'd like to see if we can pry a guy like Buowmeester out of St. Louis.

Always hated that logic.

What I'd like Chiarelli to do is a minor-ish move that will shake things up a little.

The obvious is moving on from Justin Schultz, but Fayne/Gryba/Nikitin/Ference moves would suffice

Never act in stupidity, but a move can be made here with the eye on both the present and the future, it doesn't have to be major either just SOMETHING.

Those trades are all brutal for Edmonton. If the 1st we deal is Puljujarvi, that would hurt so bad considering Andersen hasn't been a world beater this season, and that's the least bad.

Eberle for Gudbranson? Yikes.
RNH for Severson? Double yikes.

Bottom six now has zero scoring ability and also your hedging the bet that Byfuglien would even come here, and if it's not for 2 years at 8M per then it's a dumb bet and deal.

Send Talbot + conditional for Shattenkirk at the deadline.

Go for one of Hutchinson or Pavelec in the summer. Hellebuyck is ready for full time duty in Winnipeg.

Brossoit will be the goalie in Edmonton sooner than later.

Sign Yandle in the summer.

Frans Nielsen would be great on the bottom six also but that's dreaming.
