Klefbom gets injured and we fold like an umbrella. Even though Klefbom will be back soon, it's fairly obvious that an injury to either him or Sekera basically wrecks our team. Losing both could mean a bottom 3 finish, no matter how healthy the rest of the team is. To say our D is thin would be an understatement.

If there's a deal that's close for Hamonic or Buff or Shattenkirk, now would be the time to add some draft picks or whatever and overpay

There is just no pressure on NYI to move Hamonic.. They are playing great and he is a big part of their success. A 5 game losing streak is needed before Snow even thinks about accommodating Hamonic's trade request.

Same goes for guys like Shattenkirk and Burns... They are one of the biggest reasons for their team's success so there is no way they are getting moved.

What would be his options? You think RNH will throw a fit if his linemates are Khaira and Eberle and he is getting easier and less minutes ?

call it 3rd line but I am sure RNH would still be playing 18-20 minutes every night.

RNH needs to stay in Edmonton for atleast another full year.

I don't know about you, but in the salary cup world if you want to ice a competitive team you can't be paying your 3rd Center 6 million.

there must be some others though. Hamhuis is impending UFA. The Nucks are in free fall so maybe they would budge. There must be something out there. The Kings give up good assets for rentals even if they can't re sign them. We shouldn't be afraid to do the same. We need a boost, even if it's just short term.

Bit of apples 'n oranges IMO, the Kings are in Win Now mode, which is a setting that the Oilers aren't in at this time, no matter how much the fans want to think otherwise.

Sure you can when you have others in their ELC or on a bridge deal.

Hamhuis got his face blown up by Stoll slapshot and is probably out for months.

Exactly. You can't tell me that in the entire league, there aren't a few solid defencemen you can't shake free without gutting the roster. If the big names are locked into their respective teams or just out of the price range, take a hard look at players like Toby Enstrom, Mattias Ekholm, Kevin Klein. Dan Girardi is even an upgrade on most of the hot mess that is our blueline. Maybe even offer up a big package for Colton Parayko. He's slowed down since his fast start, and it's not like the Blues really, really, really need him.

He's going to be eating through a straw for quite some time, so can't imagine this will do his overall condition any good. Crappy deal.

If there was any doubt Klefbom is trending upwards or not worth his extension, just look at these last two games.

Haven't heard much from the 'Klefbom's been disappointing' crowd of late.

I really think Chiarelli is going to pull the trigger on something after the freeze. He can smell playoffs in this weak-ass division and I don't think he's going to let that slip away.

It's interesting to see Justin Schultz's ice time since he's come back from injury.

When McLellan is playing two rookies (Nurse and Davidson) and Gryba over him, especially with Klefbom out, it's clear he's not in their long-term plans. He's been 5th/6th in ice time for defense for the last 3 games, and probably would have been in the Rangers game here if Klefbom didn't get injured.

I'd be shocked if he's here by the deadline.

Schultz average icetime (rough) pre-injury: 23 mins
Schultz average icetime (rough) post-injury: 18 mins

Maybe more damning than that, it's still being scaled back.

Vs SJS: 20:13
Vs NYR: 19:15
Vs BOS: 17:54
Vs NYR: 17:27
Vs CHI: 16:44

For sure.

It has to be a huge tell if one of your top defensemen goes down and McLellan plays him (Schultz) even less.

Ok, but is your team competitive?

I'd rather take that money and try and ice and NHL d-core.

you dont think a team with 3 scoring lines would be competitive?

Hall-Draisaitl-Khaira
Slepychev-McDavid-Yak
Pouliot-RNH-Eberle <-16M 3rd line.

You dont think this can be competitive? assuming Hendricks, Letestu are on 4th line.

40M on forward is about average. The above would be well below it. 50M on forwards would be hurting the D but Oilers should be well below that.

Klefbom, Reinahrt, Nurse, Sekera = 12M .. Davidson another couple.

We can safely add 10M on Dman\Dmen long term without being in a cap crunch.

when you suck, and the coaches know you suck, they tend to not play you very much.... schultz is like the antithesis of what our coaching/management team wants in a player, so they aren't playing him... and we shouldn't be surprised when they either trade him for a 5th round pick, or they walk away in the summer (in fact we should be celebrating such a move)

I'd rather pay the 3rd line center 6 million if it's RNH or a similar quality player then pay 8.5 million for 2 bottom pairing defenceman that are barely NHL players.

I think the max we get for him at the TDL is a 5th from a contender that wants some insurance on the back end. If he stays for the year then they don't resign him.

Yep... And compare that with Davidson (+2 over that 5 game stretch):

Vs SJS: 22:16 (2nd highest ice time total, career)
Vs NYR: 18:46
Vs BOS: 20:59
Vs NYR: 19:19
Vs CHI: 19:14

And Nurse (Even over that 5 game stretch):

Vs SJS: 22:49
Vs NYR: 23:04
Vs BOS: 20:30
Vs NYR: 18:47
Vs CHI: 23:26 (2nd highest ice time total, career)

It's clear who the coaching staff has faith in, and who they do not.

Schultz also leads the defense in PP TOI averaging 2:35 mins\game played.
Davidson averages 00:25 mins\game played this season and Nurse is 0:17mins\game played.

You'd have to think that's going to change with Schultzes powerplay ineptitude.

I'd actually like for one unit to have 4 forwards and the other to have 3F - 2D.

1) Hall-Drai-Pouliot-Yakupov-Klefbom

2) RNH-McDavid-Eberle-Sekera-Davidson

Say Vancouver decides to sell off some vets if they are out of it in a month or two. Would this work for the Canucks?

Yak, Schultz, 1st (top 5 protected) for Edler and Hansen

Edler is a lefty which is not ideal. Oilers take on about 1 mil in cap.

Klefbom and Edler would be a pretty swede pairing.

Take out Yak and Hansen and I would probably do it
