If people thought like this, there wouldn't have been two lockouts in the past 7 years Oilers dynasty team would have stayed together to win the 1994 Cup in Edmonton rather than New York.
His buyout money would also be subject to Quebec provincial taxes.

"waah waah narrative blah blah blah".
It's good to read/think before you post
I did, you're touchy today, you say that bit, then spend many other posts tearing him down, similarly what you did to Justin Schultz during the playoffs. I call it a narritive, because that what it is, a carefully crafted argument design to channel oppinion as opposed to present a point
I thought hockey players are corporated, which means they pay corporate tax not proprietor tax like the average joe. Similar to that of a doctor. This is likely true for the years he will be in Quebec. (I'm not an accountant, but I believe his buyout will be treated as "employment income" in the years it is paid out, not solely in this year).
His buyout amounts to $1.76M/year for 14 years. http://www.tampabay.com/sports/hockey/lightning/lightning-starts-lecavalier-buyout-process/2128824
In Quebec that would mean an average marginal tax rate of 47.25 on that income only... so he'd be left with $928,351.
In Alberta the rate would be 38.22% so he'd be left with 1,087,330...
But those are the taxes on only the buyout income. If you assume he signed for $5M the rates change to:
Quebec: $6.76M x (1.00-47.97%) = $3.517M
Alberta: $6.76M x (1.00-38.8%) = $4.137M
That's $620K per year!

I'm not 100% sure but Vinny should be able to get a foreign tax credit on his buyout income because it was earned outside of Canada (if he signs in Canada). The buyout was for services performed in his years in Tampa.....not in Canada and therefore not subject to tax.
From a agent on twitter
don't be surprised to see Vinny sign a 1 year deal somewhere then sign with tampa again the next year.

I doubt there are many teams as motivated to make deals as the Leafs are. Nonis is virtually willing to listen to offers on everyone.
Guy is an embarrassment.
narrative*
Letang, coming off a (undeserved) Norris nomination and with apparent 7M+ salary demands, is definitely an overpay given what he'll cost to acquire and the money it'll take to extend him. Especially when he's not a true #1 defenseman.
Would he make the Oilers better? Yes. Is the increment of "betterness" worth it given the cost it will take to acquire and extend him? No.
If that's a "tear down" campaign then so be it. I don't like one-dimensional defensemen getting overpaid and underperforming on big contracts when more solid 2-way defensemen who provide more value at same/less money are available.
My "narrative" with Justin Schultz is he's not as good as the Shattenkirk's, Voynov's, Faulk's, and Josi's of the league - and that he lacks top-pairing potential. I still value what he brings to the team - I just don't get dreams of grandeur for him like others do.
I don't agree with you often but this point I do. I've said all along that Letang plays "like" a #1 on the Penguins but will he on a weaker cast with the Oilers? I doubt it. Will be serviceable #2 for sure but how much "better" is he than Schultz if Schultz was on the Pens.
The price to acquire Letang is going to be brutal IMO
Tencer answering questions on twitter, some notable stuff -
Horcoff + Hemsky traded 'soon'.
Horcoff most likely to be traded before/at the draft
Fistric won't be back
'very possible' about landing Clutterbuck.
Belanger likely only buyout (obviously)

What's does this relate to? Must have missed something obvious.
