If the Kings move Martinez, I would hope it is for a defenseman who is signed to a contract that goes beyond the end of this season.

If they're going to add an upgrade up front and on the blueline, would love to see them acquire Matt Moulson and Mark Streit from the Islanders. Moulson is signed next season, becoming a UFA after next season, and Streit will be a UFA at the end of this season.

Martinez and King for Moulson and Streit would be a deal I'd be all over. Moulson is a more skilled version of King, loves to clean up in front of the net and has a damn good wrister as I'm sure some of us remember from the limited action we saw of him with the Kings. It also helps that he still has ties with the organization, being Quick's brother-in-law and all.

The Kings would likely have to add to Martinez and King, but if that is the basis of a deal, it is one I'd be happy with and one I'd consider as an upgrade for the team.

That would be a snow job on Snow! A Ziggy can dream, though.

Moulson's been the isles 2nd most consistent scorer the past 4 seasons, 2nd only to Tavares. Secondary scoring from Grabner/Okposo/Nielsen/Bailey remains a big problem, putting extra pressure on the NYI first liners.

Moulson in 273 Isle games has 108 g, 90a.
I don't see the isles exchanging Moulson for King and no sweetener makes that exchange doable.

Streit and Snow are in extension talks. Streit reportedly wants 3 yrs/$10m. Reasonable numbers imo.

IF a deal goes down bringing us back a Dman we are going to be overloaded unless we send one back the other way. A Mart is a tough one to lose depending on the return. A big forward and a solid vet SAH would be nice adds as long as DP was heading back. Lots of talk but seems like it is getting allot closer.

I hope we don't move any of Doughty, Voynov or A-Mart. Remember how we were the envy of the league 20 years ago when we had Blake, Zhitnik and Sydor? That went to **** thanks to some short-sighted trades.

I'm not saying our current trio will be that good, but they have the potential for sure. I'd rather we work at keeping them together, not dealing them for a quick fix (Fuhr, Zmolek, etc.)

I agree don't move any....You can never have enough good Defenders.

This year is prime example...Everyone talks about how easy stay home defenders are to replace....Well how is that working out for the Kings...

Not so easy folks, and they are hard to develop in the minors..

Was listening to Fourth Period radio and Dennis Bernstein mentioned that he had some info he would not reveal at this time about a something going on about the Kings obtaining a backup to replace Bernier if he dealt. He wouldn't go into it but makes for good discussion.

I doubt we'd carry 3 goalies, as that's just a huge distraction as the entire team will know something is going on, so it'll likely either be someone in the minors whose ready for a backup role, or be part of any Bernier trade itself (or a seperate deal on the same day).

Didn't Lombardi already say something about the organization not having another goalie ready to play in the NHL? So if Bernier is dealt this season, one would have to expect that the Kings are going to acquire a backup.

He insinuated that it was a separate deal all together that is, as Eklund would say, a Domino that will be played when Bernier is dealt.

That'd make the most sense.

I think that the two likely scenarios for Bernier is to either Calgary or New Jersey. With Calgary, I have no idea what would happen, as we'd have to have a seperate deal in place for a backup from another team (I just don't think McDonald, Taylor, Irving, etc. would cut it from Calgary). With New Jersey, as they already have Hedberg and Broduer, I'd imagine Hedberg would be coming back.

Now, assuming Eklund is correct (and that's a huge assumption that makes me feel dirty), then if he's saying we'd have to make a second deal to get a backup, that'd indicate we aren't getting a backup from whatever team we are dealing Bernier to. Thus, it's not New Jersey most likely. It would also lean towards us dealing bernier to a team such as Calgary.

In the end, odds are Eklund just thinks we're doing a deal with Calgary and will need to get a backup, and knows we'll have to go elsewhere to get it. So, in other words, he is just toss around the same stuff we've been discussing for weeks now over a Kings/Flames swap.

An interesting wrinkle could pop up in a Kings/Flames swap though ...

also according to Eklund, but WHAT IF ? ... the Flames eat part to HALF of J-Bo's Salary ?

Eklund said:
Spoke to a source today regarding the status of teams pursuing Jay Bouwmeester. I was told that for the Flames to get "serious" offers closer to what they're looking for (especially in this seller's market for defensemen), other teams want the Flames to eat a chunk of his $6.68 million cap hit before they'd consider upping the offers.

Of course, under the new NHL-NHLPA agreement, teams can eat up to half of a player's cap hit as part of a trade. In the case of Jay Bouwmeester, general managers feel that his current contract is "too odious" to take on in full given what he done for the bulk of his time in Calgary. As such, in order to make it more of a hockey trade than a salary dump, the Flames may need to eat a chunk of his deal (which runs through 2013-14).

Boston, LA, Montreal and Philadelphia all have varying degrees of interest, so there is some competition involved here.

So what if it's BERNIER for BOUWMEESTER @ $3.34 Mil or so ? instead of Iginla ! and we do a separate deal for a Back-Up Goalie ? WOULD you ? WOULD Dean ? :sarcasm: hmmmmmmm

=================

Another option I've been thinking on ... and haven't seen anyone else bring up yet ...

WHAT IF ... Dallas is out of Playoff contention, and becomes sellers, and considering they'll be moving OUT of our Conference next season, what about a deal to get Stephane Robidas from them ? He's 36, a Solid VET D man would could use, $3.3 Mil CAP hit but only gets paid $2.85 Mil next year, UFA 2014/15, IMO he plays bigger than his size and could be a nice pick up ? thoughts ... would you send A-Mart or Muzzin to Dallas for Robidas ?

glad others agree with this point. i said the same thing last year heading into the deadline. i would hate for LA to trade one of them away and miss the chance they did 20 years ago. it killed me for years seeing Zhitnik and Syd skating on other teams, especially after the guys they were moved for did squat in the long run for LA.

now stack Muzz into the mix. if the team and the fans are patient, i think in 2-3 years time LA's defense will possibly have the chance of becoming the envy of the league. there are to many very strong prospects behind the current 4 for this to not come to fruition. it will just be a matter of degree, damn good or legendary. there is a great mix of talent, skill and style that will hopefully all come together and complement each other.

I've been confused on the eating salary part. Is it just for this season, or for the life time of the contract, or how does that go? What are the rules on it?

My question with Bouwmeester is two-fold. First, even at $3.34 million, that's a lot to absorb, and we'd only do that if Scuderi was not coming back. Frankly, I'd rather we just spend Scud's $3.4 million on the open market and get someone for free than trade for Bouwmeester, costing us Bernier in the process, especially since Bouwmesster himself is a UFA after next season.

Secondly, I wonder if we even need to add a D-man for next season. I'm not sure what's the story with Mitchell, but Greene should be back soon and next year (assuming no contract issues), we'll have:

Doughty-Martinez
Voynov-Greene
Muzzin-Ellerby

It's not lights out, but it's pretty good. And we could easily add someone better than Ellerby in UFA for Scud's money to really bolster that and leave Ellerby as the #7 D-man if we wanted to.

It's my understanding it is for the length left on the contract. But since we don't have a copy of the CBA anywhere yet we can't really be sure.

But I agree we would be better off with Scuds if we can lock him up before the deadline.

As long as it's not Johan Hedberg, then whatever. I watch a lot of Devils games now (Sexyonov) and he SUCKS.

Don't worry, Hedberg has a no trade clause.

Once a deal for a backup is made, expect the next announcement to be Bernier being shipped out immediately after that.

Bouwmeester and Comeau (for depth)
For Martinez, King and Kozun
Calgary would have to retain salary as well.
Best part of the deal is Jaybo wears #4 lol!

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

You think JayBo only costs a #5 defenseman, a 3rd liner, and a fringe prospect? Even with Comeau's negative value, no way.

Ah hell no. JayBo is not what we need. If we want a pansy d-man who doesn't hit, we would be better off re-signing Scuderi or trading for Tyler Myers.

Ya I do. IMO Martinez will soon be a top 4 but likely on another team. King is a solid young 3rd liner who could become a 2nd liner. I put Kozun in there because its unlikely he makes LA and he has ties to Calgary having played junior hockey there. IMO Jaybo isn't a top pairing Dman. He's a #3/4 making too much money. Maybe I'd throw in a 3rd rd pick in 2014 but I wouldn't go higher than that package.

I'm sure teams more desperate for D would pay more assets to get him but to me his worth to LA is basically what I proposed

Calgary will have to eat some of Bouwmeester's cap hit if Dean makes a deal for him.

I think Calgary wants to move him, and he would be an upgrade to our 2nd pairing.

Bouwmeester isn't what this team needs. We don't need another soft dman. We need someone physical, that plays with some edge but maintains discipline.

Doughty is probably our most physical dman, and that's saying something.
