Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

If I had to guess Chicago? Maybe Utah

Oh man...I think Chicago is going to spend like drunken sailors this offseason. They have to protect their "golden boy" Bedard and have tons of cap space (and one of the worst rosters in the league).

Watch....They're going to offer Marner the moon and give another big contract to another name free agent.

It's much easier to deal with being overpaid when you've won a cup though.
Sure. Bennet is such a rare commodity in this version of the NHL that they’ll be enough suitors that unless Toronto pays him Marner money, they’ll be enough teams within a solid range he can probably avoid the Toronto nonsense - who knows, maybe he wants to be that guy.

Ekblad is putting on a salary drive. Pass on the Islanders signing him.
Sure. He’s been bumpy over the years, but he’s definitely a different look on defense. He’s winning and experience would be great for Dobson and Schaefer to be.

To turn things around, the Isles are going to have to bite the bullet on a big contract, and trade out a valuable asset like a Pulock.

I don't think the path to the Islanders turning things around is handing on a terrible contract directly after almost being done with all of the terrible contracts Lou handed out.

Fair, it’s the offseason of bad contracts coming. The isles gave out bad contracts to, well, bad players or invested in players that haven’t met their contract value.

Islanders 1st for San Jose's 2nd overall pick, Engvall, Duclair, Mayfield and a 2026 2nd rounder.

I know you are kidding, but Darche acquired Duclair in TB as a rental.

I am guessing their is some team that might be desperate enough to take on Mayfield as well which leaves Engvall who i would argue is more useful then Duclair but the contract would be tough to move.

In the case of Duclair it might not be the worst move giving him one more chance assuming whatever happened between him and Roy is not a huge deal. That being said it's almost a case if we keep him we best not to sign Palmieri who I assume probably would get like a 3 year 4M dollar deal

In that Darche interview clip that has been going around, it was refreshing to hear him say that being 4-5 points out of the playoffs at the deadline is a lot further than it seems. If we’re hovering around that 9-10 spot come TDL next year, it seems like he’ll be more realistic about our chances than Lamoriello.

Weren't the Islanders like 4-5 points out last year(2023-24)?

Yes, but it doesn’t seem like Darche holds that “just squeak in game 82 and anything can happen” philosophy. If we’re at that point at the deadline again we need to be moving guys out, and not just because they chose not to re-up.

I’ve seen a fair amount of chatter regarding Pageau on this board and also on the main board.

We all can agree he’s a gritty undersized guy who’s good at the dot but isn’t he also one of the guys we thought was negative value at the start of last season?

I’d have no problem moving on from him for something in the neighborhood of a second round pick. However, given the loss of Nelson and now an injury to Horvat, we have to be realistic about our depth at center for next season. If somehow Horvat’s injury puts him out of action through the initial part of the upcoming season, then Pageau isn’t going anywhere until the TDL.

Pageau is pretty much a movable piece as of now if the team is committed to getting younger, and believes they can have a guy in the system overtake Pageau.

Pageau with two years left and unknowns with the cap the following year would have been tough to swallow for teams. Now that he had one year left and the cap is rising higher it’s easier for teams to fit him in. Same with Lee, who had a really nice bounce back year.

I still say keep him around and figure it out at the deadline because I don’t think you’re going to get much more in the offseason. Unless you have a plan that requires creating some cap space…

“Mathieu is the perfect choice to lead our hockey operations,” Islanders Operating Partner, John Collins said. “He will be given every resource available to put the Islanders first-in-class on the ice, with our business initiatives, and in the community. Mathieu has served as a key member of the Tampa Bay Lightning and has a diverse background in top-level business models. He is a proven winner and is committed, as is our ownership group, to building a group that will be highly competitive next season and beyond.”

Bahh gawd that's Mitch Marner's music.

Tampa has a history of trading 2 firsts at once and we just picked up an extra first. Wonder who the target is

He's an unrestricted free agent. The most they would need to trade would be a mid-late round pick for the right to negotiate with him before 07/01 and also be able to offer an 8th year on a contract.
