I wouldn't trade A-Mart for Regehr. Regehr knows the system but also has lead feet and is aging. This is coming from someone who catches every Sabres game.

Unless we're talking a William, Amart, prospect or Richardson type for Reg and Pomm I wouldnt be to interested.

A plug third line minutes eating Defender, better not cost A-Mart.

I would fire Lombardi for a move like that.

If A-Mart is going the other way, it better be a top two defender that can eat 22 to 25 minutes.

AMart is best as a third pairing defender. He hasn't been able to handle more than that.

What top 2 defender do you think he's worth?

What I mean to say is, Martinez will be put in a package for a top 2 dman, probably packaged with Bernier. I wouldn't expect us to deal him straight up for another Dman

If we're going to give up Martinez, we better be getting a top 2 dman. I'm not willing to give up A-Mart for Regehr, no thanks. Give me Smid, that's who I want. Bernier and Martinez for Smid, Dubnyk and a 1st. Win-win for both teams

This is who I would prefer to get. A younger version of a Regher that can keep up with either Doughty or Voynov. I have no problem trading Martinez for him

We are in position to give up significant assets for rentals. Think of the Penguins and Hossa. The Kings are now in position to make that move.

I am not saying that trading AMart for Regehr is a good idea or equal value, but we are overvaluing him a little bit and we need to be prepared to give away young future assets of value for aging assets with no future with this team other than to give us a boost in a single playoff run.

I kinda agree. Also I don't think we need to ship out a roster player, (Besides Drewiske). I would go with picks and lower end prospects to bandaid our D core this year. Greene should be back for the playoffs so why create another hole somewhere else. I'll start shopping for a D with Drewskie and Philly's pick(3-4 round) and see what I need to add.

That's a terrible deal for Edmonton, they're not going to trade their first, unless they probably get a top 2 defenseman in a package with that first, though it is Tambellini but still that's a bad deal for Edmonton.

Just as a comparable...

At age 32 Hal Gill was moved for a 2nd and a 5th.

At age 36 and last year's trade deadline. Gill and a 5th were traded for 2 low-to-mid range prospects (Geoffrion and Slaney) and a 2nd round pick.

There will always be a strong market for defense-first dmen at the trade deadline or at any time really.

Plus, other than Mitchell how many of the old guys Dean has brought in have worked? Blake and Smyth were disasters, Gagne didn't work out neither did Modin.

Not true. WHile I think that more were busts than successes, Handzus, Scuderi and Mitchell were all to some degree strong additions to the team as older players added to the team. Also Modin did very well considering we gave up basically nothing for him and only had him around for about 20 games total.

And Amart is averaging 17 mins a game.

Regehr may not be the same player he was in calgary, but he's still better option than what we currently have. And I agree that paying Amart + for Regehr is an overpayment, but I, unlike others think it's worth it. Besides, having 4 pmd is redundant. We definitely need a physical presence.

What good is a guy with a cup ring if he can't clear the front and play the physical game that Regehr can.

Actually, A-Mart was averaging much more than that prior to the injury. His ice is down since the injury, so he may still be battling through it. Prior to the injury, he was averaging 20:35 a game, including a high of 25:21 in one game. Give him some more time to shake off the rust.

My point though was Regehr really isn't a top D-man anymore, maybe a #4 at most at this point in his career. He's winding down, even Sabres fans are saying he's getting slow, so while he may be worth a 2nd round pick at the deadline, he's not worth A-Mart +.

And what good is a Stanley Cup ring D-man? Really? The guy didn't have a goal go in on him while he was on the ice for the final 12 playoff games. For us, that streak started in Round 2 against St. Louis. That's a bit of luck for sure, but it's also a testiment to his abilities. Greene is due back before the tarde deadline, he will bring whatever Regehr would.

I think LA would target Stephane Matteau. Matteau and Hedberg, makes sense.

AMart is best as a third pairing defender. He hasn't been able to handle more than that.

Pre-injury he handled a lot more than that. He may be playing hurt still, so give him time to return to form.

We are in position to give up significant assets for rentals.

Yes and no IMO. While as defending champs we need to look at going all in, on the flip side our prospect pool is thin. Not thin in terms of bodies, we have lots of kids that can and should reach the NHL some day, but thin in terms of talent. At the deadline, teams don't target the Brandon Kozun's, they target the Tanner Pearson's, the Tyler Toffoli's, the Derek Forbort's. Kozun's nice, but I doubt he goes above 3rd line duty. Which is good and all, but we are getting to be a bit starved for core player talent, the type of guys who can play in the two lines, starting goalie, that sort of thing.

While we do have the benefit of having a young NHL roster, the time is coming soon where we'll need to go the Detroit route and pull back a bit on the big trades so as to restock our prospect pool. This could be the year, especially since we are already without a 1st round pick.

I'd love Vanek on the Kings but not at what it would cost the Kings, he would be like handzus or anything and be a rock in front of the net on the PP and dude scores, but again the price is what makes it a no.

TSN reports we're interested in Iginla. WHEEEEEEE!

Well, I am sure we've been interested for a while. Getting him is another thing entirely. They are going to ask for a sizable package. We'd have to give up some shiny things for likely one playoff run, like Hossa to the Pens.

Meh. We are not looking for him to be a Mitchell. Just a solid rental that can clear bodies out from in front of the next and not let shooters skate right between the dots and beat Quick glove side etc.

Iginla is a ufa at the end of the year

Did you read it? He's literally one of the worst defensemen in the NHL, and he makes everyone around him worse. Hell no.

I have lots of interest in him but we can't trade Bernier until the deadline at the latest. And I don't like the idea of him leaving after the season. Trading for one of my favorite players for just a month or two doesn't sit well with me.

Yeah, that's strange, I must have been thinking of someone else's contract, maybe Vanek's. It will cost quite a bit without a first round pick though, but I suppose I have to practice what I preach and prepare to trade away valuable future assets for aging ones with no future. :P

I did, but marching up with your printed out chart isn't going to change anyone's mind :P He is a big, veteran body, that clears players out of the crease. Notice that most of those players are from the east and are feeding much more talented teams... Not to say those charts are meaningless, but the numbers don't tell the full story. GM's have to go on more than just numbers. A lot of players would go overlooked otherwise.

So potentially Bernier for Iginla and something else, probably a pick. I wouldn't be too keen on it as a pure rental (depending on what Calgary would add of course) but if there's room to keep him around that'd be a tremendous deal. I doubt we have the cap space next season though...

Still, seems like the Kings would be the ones to add when acquiring a player like Iginla for Bernier, not the other way around.
