Plus, other than Mitchell how many of the old guys Dean has brought in have worked? Blake and Smyth were disasters, Gagne didn't work out neither did Modin.
Not true. WHile I think that more were busts than successes, Handzus, Scuderi and Mitchell were all to some degree strong additions to the team as older players added to the team. Also Modin did very well considering we gave up basically nothing for him and only had him around for about 20 games total.
And Amart is averaging 17 mins a game.
Regehr may not be the same player he was in calgary, but he's still better option than what we currently have. And I agree that paying Amart + for Regehr is an overpayment, but I, unlike others think it's worth it. Besides, having 4 pmd is redundant. We definitely need a physical presence.
What good is a guy with a cup ring if he can't clear the front and play the physical game that Regehr can.
Actually, A-Mart was averaging much more than that prior to the injury. His ice is down since the injury, so he may still be battling through it. Prior to the injury, he was averaging 20:35 a game, including a high of 25:21 in one game. Give him some more time to shake off the rust.
My point though was Regehr really isn't a top D-man anymore, maybe a #4 at most at this point in his career. He's winding down, even Sabres fans are saying he's getting slow, so while he may be worth a 2nd round pick at the deadline, he's not worth A-Mart +.
And what good is a Stanley Cup ring D-man? Really? The guy didn't have a goal go in on him while he was on the ice for the final 12 playoff games. For us, that streak started in Round 2 against St. Louis. That's a bit of luck for sure, but it's also a testiment to his abilities. Greene is due back before the tarde deadline, he will bring whatever Regehr would.
I think LA would target Stephane Matteau. Matteau and Hedberg, makes sense.
AMart is best as a third pairing defender. He hasn't been able to handle more than that.
Pre-injury he handled a lot more than that. He may be playing hurt still, so give him time to return to form.
We are in position to give up significant assets for rentals.
Yes and no IMO. While as defending champs we need to look at going all in, on the flip side our prospect pool is thin. Not thin in terms of bodies, we have lots of kids that can and should reach the NHL some day, but thin in terms of talent. At the deadline, teams don't target the Brandon Kozun's, they target the Tanner Pearson's, the Tyler Toffoli's, the Derek Forbort's. Kozun's nice, but I doubt he goes above 3rd line duty. Which is good and all, but we are getting to be a bit starved for core player talent, the type of guys who can play in the two lines, starting goalie, that sort of thing.
While we do have the benefit of having a young NHL roster, the time is coming soon where we'll need to go the Detroit route and pull back a bit on the big trades so as to restock our prospect pool. This could be the year, especially since we are already without a 1st round pick.
