I'd take our fourth line over most in the league. Both Moore and Boyle are decent third liners, and we have them on the fourth line.

1994...

Legit #1C and scoring defensemen.

Those are for sure our two biggest holes. But our D is quite solid.

I am not of the mindset that you NEED a #1 C to win the Cup. But I think in the playoffs, you need the D to chip in with points.

I was posting about 1994 to reference the "skin of your teeth" post. I just find it hard to believe that any fan can be negative about beating the defending SC Champions with our backup goalie in net, and dismiss the team 20 games before the playoffs begin. We may not even make the playoffs. We may be the #3 seed. Who the hell knows? But why watch if your realism borders on cynicism? Being a realist would be saying okay, this isn't the best team in the league right now, but they're playing extremely well, and if we stay hot going into the playoffs, and can add a scorer to our lineup, we can make a deep run and beat some good teams. I don't think that's being unreal.

I don't think anyone is saying this team will win the Cup for sure. I think the point is that if you're in the playoffs, with 6 solid defensemen, balanced lines, and a top 5 goalie, you have a shot to beat ANY team, be it by the skin of your teeth or by 5 goals.

I agree that it shouldn't be your teams motto because at that point it is about being complacent and hoping for the best. On the flipside should LA not have traded for Jeff carter when they were an 8th seed? Anything can happen worked for them that year. I think it is wrong to build a team around anything can happen but to write off a playoff team because they are not elite is also wrong in my eyes.

well its not any teams motto or just the rangers motto, its every teams motto..

how else do you build a team? assemble a team of good players who at their peak can provide enough wins for a stanley cup.. the rangers have that right now.. will they peak at the right time? how will injuries play a roll? who is gonna be playing through a broken foot, or a separated shoulder?

i dont want to talk about 2011.. but they were close.. a few injuries away.. thats how it is every year.. a few real good teams cut short due to injuries or other circumstances.. its the ****ing playoffs..

Lol, ok. Winning games by the skin of your teeth isn't how you win a championship. It would take a miracle run.

Then why does everyone worship that 11-12 team? All they did was win games by the skin of their teeth. Oh and when it's the Blackhawks, any win is impressive. The Blackhawks don't get blown out unless they completely fail to show up. We had a rough 3rd it happens against far worse teams than the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks won the cup last year on a game that they won by the skin of their teeth.

they certainly got by the skin of their teeth those first two series against ottawa and washington. talk about nerve-wracking and then they lose to a devils team they were better than. im not really sure they would have beaten the kings anyway but that would of been cool to see new york vs los angeles and quick vs hank. i never even watched a replay of that henrique goal and i never intend to.

Except you guys aren't being realistic. You're being cynical and negative. NYR have been the 2nd best team in the East since stumbling out of the gate at 2-6 or 2-7 or whatever it was. Do the math since then. It's much easier to be critical of your team that you're watching every game. Do you think the rest of the East doesn't take the NYR seriously? I don't.

I'm just posting facts. I have yet to see anyone refute: Our lack of a top line center; Stepan being an awful playoff performer; points from the backend.

Seriously, if you guys can't handle anything that's not lollipops and daffodils, feel free to ignore it.

So buy out Richards, use that money for Callahan.
Don't get me wrong but I would rather have cally then Richards any day of the week.
A bad contract is just that a bad contract. If we have to eat one let it be Callahan that we keep

All I am saying is sports are a crap shoot ...

2011/2012 - Kings won the SC finishing 8th in the West
2011/2012 - Devils won the ECF finishing 3rd in the East
2009/2010 - Flyers won the ECF finishing 7th in the East
Super Bowl XLII - Giants beat the Patriots who haven't lost a game
2011 Dallas Mavericks beat the Miami Heat

... I can go on and on ....

Devils were 6th in the East, strengthening your point even more.

not quite sure what ya mean.. lots of negativity around these parts eh?

is that not true though? so nothing is possible? hes built a good team.. these rangers are good.. can they be good at the right time? who knows, no one knows. isnt that why we watch?

i dont understand where you're coming from man.

Just saying anything can happen as a justification to put off making the smart fiscal decision is like putting all of your retirement into 1 stock that you heard was going to be a good one. Does that justify making the smart decisions for long term health?

Yeah, IMO this team is deeper at forward than the 11-12 team, slightly better on D, and equal in goal. Swap MSL and Callahan an that's out best team post lockout, IMHO.

Agreed. Get MSL, and the skill level is higher. The overall depth is greater. The scoring on the 3rd line is better. Again, getting MSL takes some of the burden off Nash.

Good giving him 2.5 million? That's a likely contract.

He'll get it from somewhere, maybe a tiny bit less.

- We're (probably) going to try to contend in the short-term.
- He's an established heart and soul player here.
- Our forward corps is small and offense-first - yes, even without St. Louis.

Who needs him more than we do?

No problem with that at all. Your boy Dorsett makes 1.63 and can't take face-offs, doesn't have size, and isn't as good defensively. Never scored 22 goals either. I'd sign him at 4-5 years at that cost. And Boyle really brings it in the playoffs.

Realism is shunned around here.

I think it's incredibly INCREDIBLY presumptuous that your high and mighty opinion is the standard of realism. The you is more of a general you. "I have the objectively true opinion, everything else is not being realistic". It's so ****ing arrogant. :shakehead

I'm just posting facts. I have yet to see anyone refute: Our lack of a top line center; Stepan being an awful playoff performer; points from the backend.

how old is stepan? because it took pavel datsyuk and henrik zetterberg about 4 playoffs to finally realize its a different game.. so they sucked big time for 4 years.. then became two of the best playoff players... is stephan unable to grow and improve? he is still a kid to a degree...

and he doesnt have to be a number 1.. because the rangers have an real good amount of depth up front..

Stepan has totally underperformed in the playoffs, and it is disconcerting. But he is still only 23. We definitely need the D to chip in with some points, but if I recall, didn't Stralman, McDonagh, Staal, Girardi chip in with some points in the playoffs recently? I believe it is our forwards disappearing that has been more of the problem.

They lost. Period. Each team cam back from a "month long Olynpic break" and we were defending a lead.

Chicago is better. Rangers are better than you give them credit for. If each makes it to the finals I think you'd be surprised by how close the series is. Rangers 6D are top 5 in the league.

And Chicago's defense is what? Not top 5?

We have a fine team. A fun team to watch. I enjoy this team. But they don't play in a vacuum. I have yet to hear a tangible reason that makes this team better than any of the others mentioned. Other than "renounce your fandom you pagan realist".

The suggestions that we should throw rational thought and longevity to the wind, trade "futures" and roster players to acquire a 38 year old for one season, are more ridiculous than someone suggesting that perhaps this isn't the season to make such a move. Perhaps if they had a #1 center, a real offensive defenseman, and at least one other winger besides Kreider and Pouliot in the top 9 that had anything resembling size and grit, then yea, maybe trading for St. Louis would make sense.

OR...

They could have PATIENCE, trade Callahan for some young pieces, buyout Richards' terrible contract, somehow figure out how to get another center that can pass as a real #1-#2, and then SIGN St. Louis as a free agent to a short-term contract, and then take a run, with a more complete roster...

Can the conditions of a pick be changed if traded to another team? For instance, Buffalo trade Stewart+ 'and the Blues conditional 2016 3rd/1st to the Rangers for Callahan... And then the Rangers flip that pick to get MSL in another package...the terms of Miller resigning or the Blues making the WCF remain right?

My boy?

Now they're going to pay him based on his aberration of a 22 goal season?

Moore makes 1 million. Boyle will make 2.5. Worth it?
