Ryan Kesler of 2-3 years ago is the exact type of player the Rangers need. Land THAT and I could start to get behind the contender talk.

However, I'm not sure they'd be getting that. He has taken a lot of damage over the years. He will be 30 at the start of next season.

And Vancouver wants a 20-25 y/o center that can grow with the team and step into that role. Stepan would be the obvious target, and that would be terrible for the NYR. The goal would be to have Stepan and Kesler as your Krejci/Bergeron.

That leaves basically JT Miller. Not even sure van would consider that. Personally I'd rather take the shot that Miller can fill that role for 8-10 years than gamble on a potentially broken down Kesler. As tough as that is to say because I really do like Kesler. And Miller while encouraging still has things to work on.

So we want to trade the 23 y/o center who is making 3M, plays pretty much every day for the 29 y/o center who is now prone to injury, (injured right now), who makes 5M signed only til 2015 at 5M which is 2M more, who puts up the same amount of points (Kesler 38, Stepan 35) and seems to be on the decline while the other has alot of upside?

Derek Stepan may not be a 1C right now, but I can assure you neither is Ryan Kesler anymore.

Am I reading this right? on a board that thinks prospects and young players are the be all and end all?

I disagree. Stralman and Klein are #2 RHD at best. Vatanen isn't a #1 RHD right now and might never be. McIlrath isn't likely to be a #1 RHD ever, and even if he gets to that point it won't be anytime soon. Sure, put McD on the right side and bump Staal up, but then who is playing on the second pairing on the left side? Can Klein, Stralman or Vatanen play on the left side? I'm not comfortable with Staal and John Moore as #1 and #2 on the left side. In fact, I'm not even sure about Staal's ability to play 23-25 MPG every game. He's been better the last few months, but I'm still not sure if he will ever be back to the player that he was.

You should be! ;)

Vatanen is in his rookie season, any prediction of how strong our blueline would be should reasonably be made on, in a lack of a better word, going concern basis. Ie, that he don't fall of the face of the planet after this season but instead keeps developing a bit.

A blueline with:
McD-Vatanen
Staal-Strålman
Moore-Klein
would hold the quality necessary to at least be mentioned in connection with putting a contender on the ice.

Could this be something like a sign & deal on Girardi for Vatanen + and then Vatanen + (be it Anaheim's + or ours) is moved for MSL? Then Cally elsewhere, like STL for whatever it is they're offering. I assume Stewart + if negotiations have gone well and there's a decent chance he resigns there. I dunno. I'm trying to make sense of all of this. I don't think an unsigned Cally gets us MSL no matter what the situation is.

And I don't think we sacrifice much to get him now, at least I hope we don't. I don't wanna see Zucc being mentioned. As much as Vatanen and MSL would be great here, that really does diminish our already very limited "grit" play. One of our most physical forwards and a pretty tough D-man. I feel like we'd have to get some of that somewhere else, there'd have to be other moves. McIlrath isn't ready.

personally I would keep the entire D together. they are playing well together and all are relatively to very young.

I don't want Kesler unless he could be had for Cally and I don't want MSL either if I am to be honest. MSL is too old for me. Don't like the concept of getting a crying 38 y/o. He could prove me wrong, I am aware of that, but I am just not excited aboug getting him...

It wouldn't make any sense to trade our #1 RHD in Girardi to get another RHD in Vatanen only to ship him off to MSL.

I agree about Kesler, disagree about MSL... he would instantly upgrade the offense tremendously.

Yup. I have no doubt he'd have his bumps in the road this season and, yes, it might even impact whether we lose in the 2nd round in 6 games or in 4.

But I strongly suspect people would be VERY happy with a first pair of McD-Vatanen in a year's time...

depends on how his defense is.. unless you can put up a ton of points from the blue line like Karlsson, suban, etc, if you can't play defense and it allows as many goals from the other team, I dont see it as a good trade off..

I do like Vatanen though, and if we HAD to get rid of Girardi, I'd take him in a deal, but I'd rather just sign Girardi.

No. No. No.

Ask yourself this, if Tampa can keep MSL do you think they will trade him? Simple yes or no. The answer to that question is no. They will not do it. Not the leading scorer and captain. They are a contender, they are not about to dismantle their team.

If they have come to a point where irrepable damage has been done and they feel that they must trade him, that decision has already been taken. Then they pick up the phone. In that scenario, who would offer them a better deal than Cally? I had someone reply to me eariler that 10-15 teams would be able to top our offer. That is ridiculous, I very much doubt that there is a single team out there that could make a better offer than Cally. The best offer for Tampa is of course a offer that don't send their season down the drains, that in other words replaces MSL on the roster. What teams will want MSL? Teams that hope to contend. He is 38 y/o. How many of these teams are prepared to trade a RW that can play in all situations and 20 minutes a night for MSL? Boston? Chi? LA? SJ? It seems be no other team that would consider making that piece available.

If they get Cally, they save their season. Then they can resign him if they want or spend that money on someone else. THey are not dealing MSL to Boston for like Morrow and a late 1st and flush this season.

This has nothing to do with the fact that the Rangers sucked for the first month and a half before they got the system down... nope.

Rangers are going to make the playoffs.

it doesn't matter what other teams might offer, he wants to come here if moved.

You wouldn't do Kesler for Miller? I think you are being irrational. Kesler is worth more than Miller on the trade market.

Is he worth a lot more to US on the trade market? We could use a number one center, but that's probably not Kesler at this point. Why move one of your best prospects for a guy that would be more of a luxury than anything?

Agree on Kesler, disagree on St.Louis. I usually have very low expectations for players brought in but I think this guy would fit AV's system like cheese fits a pizza. The cost of getting him is of course a big questionmark here, but I usually trust Slats when it comes to trading.

Vatanen could get there, but you always have to be skeptical about those small offensive-minded d-man. How many of them ever develop their defensive game enough to play a Top 2 role?

Vatanen instead of Girardi would definitely weaken the Rangers defense for the next few years, and these were the years that the Rangers were supposed to make that push for the cup with the core in their prime.

Hahahahahaha. The hilarious thing is that half (more?) the posters on this board think we're one of the favorites to get to, and perhaps win, the ECF.

I think my prediction is right on the money and any deal we make - short of, you know, getting Malkin for a 4th - is only going to bump the team's fortunes slightly one way or another (this year).
