Even if we get a shot to draft a player like Draisaitl?
I would hold onto both picks and go high end skill with both.

Vatanen, yes. St. Louis, no. How small do we want to be?
For every Edmonton and Florida there has been a Chicago and Pittsburgh though. Just luck of the draw and getting the right supporting cast to compliment your top players.

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but I don't think you not watching anymore would really effect anyone but yourself.
Also, I don't know how you can possibly hold this against the team. Callahan is demanding a disgusting contract. G was demanding a reasonable one, then NYR met it, and now it might not be enough for him. These guys aren't bigger than the franchise. They can't hold it hostage only to be overpaid and eventually drag it down.
I love both these players as Rangers, but if they want to rob a franchise for the next 6 years, especially together, I prefer that they do it somewhere else.
If we're going to let emotion get involved, where is the loyalty here? From either guy? Girardi wasn't even drafted, NYR gave him a shot, and now he's a very wealthy man who is a top pairing d in the NHL. Callahan, despite not being a huge offensive presence, rose up the ranks about as quickly as possible here, and was eventually named captain of this original six franchise. Now, they both can demand whatever they want, and they're demanding overpayment. The whole line of being ungrateful goes both ways. Players do a lot for teams and teams do a lot for players.
If you can get the leading scorer of the past 5 years, you do it.

Bye... I'm loyal to the shield...
I would move futures to TB for St Louis.. move Girardi to the Ducks for Vatanen and Etem or Vatanen and Kerdiles, etc. something like that. move Callahan to another team for a roster player and prospect (the rumored asking price).. MSL would give us the top 6 guy we need, Vatanen would give us a 3rd RHD to go with Stralman and Klein, whatever roster player in the Callahan deal replaces whatever offense we lose with him, which is not much.. That not only helps us out now (adding MSL to pretty much the same team), it also helps us out in the future as well with prospects and picks.
If Girardi really did not accept the Rangers offer after we reportedly moved to his asking price.
Two questions:
1) Who plays RD on the top pair, or do you shift McD over?
2) What "futures" are you trading for MSL?
I like St Louis, but it's not the last 5 years you're trading for. It's the next few and he is 38.
Again, not saying I dislike him but you have to be realistic about what your getting.
Not if it costs what it would cost.
We can wait the year and sign him as a free agent and not lose the assets in the process.
I could see Callahan + conditional pick for Kesler. That makes a lot more sense. Kesler played well for AV. The Rangers need a big center. He fills multiple needs. Signed.
Callahan played his best hockey with Torts. Adds physicality and grit that he likes.
That makes more sense than St Louis
Boomer wasn't wrong about the St. Louis stuff. The player asked for a trade and the Rangers spoke to TB. That he had before anyone else. Yzerman doesn't want Callahan. The Rangers don't want to give up young assets. That's the problem.
You think Boomer knows anything about Vatanen? I don't think Boomer is watching the Ducks late at night when he wakes up at 3 or 4 in the morning to do his radio show. Someone gave him Vatanen. The Rangers finally agree to give Girardi 6 years and $33M but G isn't rushing to sign it. Vatanen would be a good get for the Rangers.
Yeah I edited it with who plays the top RHD pairing? Stralman? I dont see him being able to do that.
depends on what futures we could recoup in the Callahan/Girardi deals...
True, but his next few years will be better than the monstrous contract Callahan wants.
I seriously have to question your hockey knowledge.
St. Louis plays big boy hockey better than any team in the league. Their little guys are tough and they all block shots. Callahan looked like himself next to Backes.
Armstrong and Hitchcock were probably drooling at the Olympics.
I think you'd have to go with
Staal-McD
Moore - Klein
Stralman - Vatanen
I don't really like that. We really don't win the cup, or even stand a chance by inserting Vatanen and MSL for Cally and Girardi.
Outside of Girardi being traded for a solid top 4, we really can't lose him and expect to compete. He's too vital.
If we got Vatanen + Kerdiles for Girardi, the Ducks board would implode.
