move some prospects/picks for MSL.

If Girardi doesn't accept the deal he originally wanted, move him to Ana for something like Vatanen and a 1st. or Vatanen and Etem, etc.

same with Callahan, we could move him for prospects/picks/stewart whatever.

That way we keep the same kind of team. Vatanen maybe replaces Girardi.. St Louis replaces Callahan and then we still have picks/prospects.

would help both the present and the future.

The Rangers are agreeing to Girardi's price and trading him?

For Sami Vatanen, who just got sent to the AHL?

hmmm... IDK.... a cynic might say the Rangers are using Boomer's newfound cred to make it appear they're in full wheel-deal mode, to maximize returns on Callahan;

that said, you never know unless you're in the room.
But for them to move their top pairing righty D and total warrior in Girardi, who wants pretty reasonable numbers (that they're agreeing to!!!), IDK man, something would have to be rotten in RangerLand.
Same time, good young assets are just that; in theory they could bump a Klein or Stralman up; but the logic of that kind of upheaval to the roster heading into the stretch? Hard to believe;

same time, you never know where trade talks can go; they could be working on something that, overall, turns out to be awesome.

The Rangers may have gotten closer to his demands, but what if he backed off and decided he wants to go to free agency.

Have to wonder if these guys just don't like upper management and are looking to go elsewhere. If Sather and Dolan were in control of your fate to win a championship, would you stick around? I wouldn't.

It sure is, but I dont understand the move if hypothetically Callahan is moved for MSL, to me that is a win NOW move, whereas replacing Girardi with Vatanen (and replacing his minutes with Stralman/Klein) seams to me like a long term move that wont help the team with a playoff push.

totally agree we either go after st louis and keep girardi or trade cally to blues for younger guys and girardi to ducks cant do half and half

Newsflash.....

The Rangers are 2nd in the division and aren't rebuilding......

If the Rangers are trading Callahan and/or Girardi they better get back NHL talent. This obsession with prospects (who often don't pan out) and late 1st round picks (that often don't pan out) is borderline crazy.

It's wrong to say anything can happen to the team but the whole basis of getting prospects and picks is ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!

Bu bu but SoS we can't lose Callahan for nothing! So lets trade him for prospects and picks that very likely will turn into nothing.

The double standard on this board is really ridiculous. If fans want the current team to get better those fans are idiots because they aren't thinking long term.

Would MSL for Callahan make the Rangers better the rest of this year and next? Opportunity cost? The Rangers could possibly improve the team NOW, a team that isn't that far away and we are *****ing about opportunities....lost.....3 years from now....

You sure? Picks and prospects are the way to go brah. Look at Edmonton & Florida. Perennial cup contenders any day now. See, we are doing it wrong by being a playoff team all but 1 year from 2005-2006 until now. Callahan for picks and prospects is the way to go so that way when those picks/prospects become starts (BIG IF), we won't have the best goaltender in the NHL anymore (because he will be at the end of his prime).

If Sather plays this right (bear with me), we could come out really far ahead. If he manages to unload Cally and G for MSL and Vatanen+ respectively, without giving up much else in they way of futures, I'd be very happy with the team. Not so much at the prospect of losing Cally and Girardi, but it is what it is.

Gonna take a little more to get Girardi then Sami Vatanen, no?

I'd assume a first round pick would be thrown in there as well.

stop assuming

No pick, please. Prospect. Kerdiles or another. Players that are further along in development.

hypothetical: Let's say Rangers get Ottawa's 1st in any deal with Anaheim revolving around Girardi.. can/should we trade up in the first round using our pick and the one we acquire?

I think Vatanen would be just what the doctor ordered for this team, but what would make Anaheim trade him for anything short of a high end rental like Girardi or Callahan?

All signs are pointing to MSL becoming a Ranger by the deadline or this offseason, Girardi re-signing, and Callahan being traded. Yzerman doesn't want Callahan. Something stinks here.

For every Edmonton and Florida there has been a Chicago and Pittsburgh though. Just luck of the draw and getting the right supporting cast to compliment your top players.

Are you more likely to hit your target with one round or two?

I'd say keep the picks. Unless they target a specific player they absolutely want to commit to, then trade up.

If we can get Draisaitl/Reinhart we should. Otherwise restock the pool.

“@TSNBobMcKenzie: Whether Kesler requested traded, and I can neither confirm nor reject the report, teams have been calling VAN on him. Canucks are listening.”

On Vatenen. I like the player a lot. I think he needs to be a bit sheltered right now.

He will make this defense play with pace. If it's for G, best of luck. Vatenen is a good piece to have back. I don't think he has elite level wheels like Erik Karlsson but he if definitely a poor man's version of him.

Smart player, great skater. High high hockey IQ. Physical strength not where you would want it to be for a defenseman, but he is fast and slippery.

Very smart player, and fun to watch in the offensive zone. He will fit this system well.

The ducks are loaded with good prospects. Noesan and Rackell played with Miller in Plymouth. There William Karlsson, Emerson Etem, DSP, and even Luca Sbisa who could be coming back.

If the Ducks don't cough up the OTT first, I'll gladly take three pieces from their farm.

Sbisa is a good fit for this defense, and is physical along the boards. Think Ladislav Smid. He can be insurance in case Vatenen struggles on this defense... but I don't think he will.

Would personally prefer DSP and OTT 1st with Vatenen.

Rangers might like Rackell a lot. Noesan too. Noesan brings a Dubinksy type mix of sand paper and skill set. Rackell is good too.

DSP got rushed, but made the team because of his power forward build and athletic ability. His development path is eerily similar to Nino Neiderreiter's. I thought he had too much baby fat on him when the ducks brought him up. Should be a very effective player as he is strong as an ox. I think he has offensive upside, and a no downside player as he can play effective 4th line minutes.

Scoring at a 40 goal rate in the AHL right now. Mid 92 birthday. Big boy's grown into his body and is in good shape if that's his production level.

With everything said, I would give Girardi the Captaincy if he hauled that in and re-signed in the off-season for a 6 year $33M dollar deal.

Vatanen, yes. St. Louis, no. How small do we want to be?

If we could get Vatanen while sending Cally out west, that would be amazing. Especially if we can keep Girardi.
