Where did that come from?

What team would be offering a better package to Tampa than Cally straight up???

Depends how many teams St LKouis would accept a trader too.
If he did not have NMC< probably 10-15.

You overvalue prospects.

It'll be funny if Grigs isn't on the roster next year and forces his way out of their for pennies.

You haven't watched Grigs much, huh?

Those "prospects" are different then some guy playing in the ECHL, Collge or juniors.

There are different levels of prospects, you just lump them all together. Grigs would be an example of an extremely high end and costly prospect, especially for a team that is not going to contend for years and he is one of the center pieces in their rebuild...

Hopefully not the Rangers. I'd probably be ok with it at, the end of the day, if it was Cally + ____...it's just the philosophy that irks me. Then again, should this team be in a relative "win now" mode with Hank in his prime? Does St. Louis address this team's needs? He's a goalscorer / gamebreaker, which we need. But he doesn't address our lack of a top center, and he obviously doesn't score those points as a defensemen. Can Sather fill the rest of the team's needs within the next 12 months?

I don't think Marty puts the Rangers up there with Chicago ot Pitt but realistically how much better than this can the Rangers get in the future? The Rangers don't have anyone in the system that's going to develop into a St. Louis and they sure as hell aren't trading Callahan for a prospect of that caliber. MSL joins the Rangers and instantly becomes their best player not named Hank.

A trade for MSL isn't made in a bubble. That nixes any moves with girardi. He's staying regardless of contract status. I mean, you make the deal, you are going for it. You aren't trading a top pair d man away for futures.

That also means hagelin stays. Probably move a 1st or someone like skjei which was just posted above.

I don't know. Never thought we would see a drastic rebuild but to go from one extreme where we acquire several first round picks with a few young players to losing a pick/prospect and losing an opportunity for more and possibly girardi walks for nothing... certainly a crossroads.

Starting to think if we get MSL it will be like Nash in the off season.

What is Skjei's outlook?

I've heard as high as McDonough lite to as low as bust.

Jonathan. (who I haven't seen around in a while, I don't think), has a good feel on Skjei. He had announcers raving over him during the WJC this year. I'd say closer to a #2/3 than bust for sure. But I also don't watch him enough to provide a truly educated guess.

I'd be upset if he went at the deadline.

I think he changed his username to "The Bird's Law".

He's now Poultry Law

Skjei is fun to watch, very fluid skater, decent shot. He needs to mature more, but he certainly reminds you of McD when you watch him. He gets caught up on a play and can cover himself because of his skating.

He does so more in a McD sense then a JOhn Moore sense at this point, if that makes sense.

The crazy thing is how being GM of team Canada really put Yzerman in a bad situation. He really pissed off a player on his NHL team by not including him in the initial roster, but even if I don't agree with that decision, I think he still needs to be able to make that kind of decision without being essentially blackmailed into including players.

I also wouldn't be surprised if this is also about Marty looking for a contract extension and Yzerman not being willing to give him one.

Yzerman stepped down as team canada GM the day after they won the gold medal. Before he even got on the plane to head home. There was a conflict of interest being GM of both an NHL club and a nations Olympic team. Same for Piolle or anyone else going forward.

The worst case scenario that could occur seems to have occurred though.

I know everyone is saying what Yzerman did was right, I think it was arrogant. It was almost like I know I should take St. Louis bc of what he has done and how we are now connected via the Tampa Bay Lightning. But I'm not gonna do that, Im gonna do whats right by Team Canada instead'

I don't think Im able to articulate it the way I want to. But it's almost like Yzerman knew what this was gonna lead to, and decided to do it anyway.

Canadians are ok with it, they won Gold.

Tampa Bay fan base, I don't know how they feel. I see a lot of people turning on St. Louis right now.

Ive gotten the gist that Yzerman is an alpha dog, that has been establishing his dominance in Tampa and he has had a rocky relationship with St. Louis from the get go

So, when do season tix renewal notices go out. Wouldn't put the Rangers' rationale for making moves much beyond that.

Value-wise it shouldn't be even close, but we don't know how motivated Yzerman is to move St. Louis by the deadline.

Cally, 2nd, Hrvik?

Can't even see Sather offering that much.

Saw this over on the TBL board. This is Yzerman last year on MSL trade rumors.

For whatever reason, the star winger’s name has been bandied about in media speculation ahead of Wednesday’s trade deadline, most recently as a possible fit for Boston, but it won't happen.

At least not according to the GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"Marty St. Louis is not going to be traded," Steve Yzerman told ESPN.com on Friday. "He remains one of the best players in the league and an extremely important player to our team, both on and off the ice. We are a team in transition, we just made a coaching change, Marty is one of the leaders of the team, he is not going anywhere."

This is Yzerman today on MSL trade rumors.

Asked about those conversations, Yzerman, too, declined to be specific.

"I'm not going to comment on trade rumors in this situation or any situation," he said. "That's just the way it is."

Both Yzerman and MSL had a chance to shoot this thing down like it's been done in the past and they didn't.

Some minor points of note from Katie Strang's latest update:

With one week remaining until the NHL’s March 5 trade deadline, there has been no progress toward a contract extension for Rangers captain Ryan Callahan.

In fact, the two sides did not speak at all during the Olympic break, Callahan’s agent Steve Bartlett confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com when reached by phone Wednesday morning.

Though the Rangers granted multiple teams permission to speak with Bartlett before the Olympic break, Callahan’s camp has had no such discussions recently. It is unlikely for that to happen unless the Rangers are seriously entertaining a viable offer and a team wants to explore the possibility of locking up Callahan long term.

Again, for Yzerman, I think the key is keeping Stamkos happy.

I don't think the return can be prospects. Stamkos will bolt. Pun intended.

If Sather doesn't offer that much, I will find him and I will kill him.

Slats likes to use his leverage. An acquaintance of mine grew up and was still neighbors with an NHL head of player personnel. I'll never forget this quote he had about Sather: "If you were caught in the middle of a hurricane, Sather would offer you a straw hat."

i think 1 thing people have to acknowledge is that Yzerman has absolutely no reason whatsoever to simply trade MSL away, regardless of his requests.

The Jackets kept Nash, which was a very similar situation in terms of potentially forcing a trade, but, more importantly, the Bolts are almost assuredly a playoff team, why would Yzerman trade away his top healthy player, even if it is for a captain/heart and soul kinda guy like Cally?

It would be 1 thing if cally was cost controlled for a few years, but it's the exact opposite.

if i were a Tampa fan, i'd be PISSED if the trade was MSL for Cally.

As a Rangers fan, I'd be pretty unhappy because, while it certainly upgrades us today, it does NOTHING for us for tomorrow, and, unless Henrik decides to go into God-mode in the playoffs, or the other teams around us have some crazy injuries, this team isn't winning the cup.

Nash is in the middle of his career, in the middle of his big contract, he's not retiring. St. Louis (could) decide to retire if Yzerman is going to hold him hostage. How do we know if part of the last negotiations between St. louis and Tampa bay, was that if at any point St. Louis decided he wanted a move, that the team would accommodate him. Speculating but, doesn't seem so outlandish with a player of St. Louis stature at his point of his career
