Nevermind. Total contract. Got it.
Yeah, Im guessing these guys hear the big number more than anything and dont get too immersed in all the details, at least not during the season and while negotiations go back & forth.

Circumstances converged to produce a fork in the road;
The market, the emergence of Zuc as a 2nd line RW behind Nash (which prompts Sather to consider how much is too much for a 3rd line RW?) Cally's age & injuries, Cally being a pretty hard-nose guy, etc. And the etc. might have something to do with what went on last year. AV said early this year they wanted to change the culture, or words to that effect. I remember thinking at that time that the days were numbered for someone from the leadership group, and I was saying even last year they needed to offer Cally 3 yrs max or move him. So its a sticky situation but no real villians IMO

If MSL gets traded, someone should make an avatar:

Pic of MSL in new jersey.
Pic of Steve Yzerman looking sad.
Pic of Bruno Mars with caption: "and I should have bought you flowers!!"

Looks funnier in my head. Don't hate.

hmmm Anaheim Sami Vatanen Assigned to Norfolk (AHL) i would have thought he would have stayed on the roster...

today's transactions.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/transactions/

NY Rangers J.T. Miller Recalled from Hartford (AHL)
Anaheim Sami Vatanen Assigned to Norfolk (AHL)
Buffalo Matt Moulson Activated from injured reserve
Buffalo Cody McCormick Activated from injured reserve
San Jose Bracken Kearns Assigned to Worcester (AHL)
Detroit Ryan Sproul Recalled from Grand Rapids (AHL)
Ottawa Mike Hoffman Recalled from Binghamton (AHL)
Washington Jack Hillen Assigned to Hershey (AHL) on a long-term injury conditioning loan

Ryan Sproul has not played yet in the NHL. solid young player. maybe a showcase for the Wings?? RH dman... former 2ed round pick in 2011... if im Sather i would try to see what it would cost... RH dman is a need especially in the Rangers organization.

Regardless of what has been rumored from Boomer or any other source, this whole mess is definitely not going to figure itself out until trade deadline day, March 5th.

I never blame athletes for trying to get as much as they can, but in my opinion he is not worth anything above 6 million. He simply doesn't produce enough offense or can be depended on to play a full season to warrant giving that kind of money.

I also think his game has changed over the years and doesn't seem to hit and play as feisty as he did when he emerged into the league wearing #43... It's been great rooting for the guy but he has unrealistic expectations of what he should earn for what he brings to the table.

Personally, I don't think Cally is worth a penny less than 6 MILL per year and I wish the two sides would just settle on that even if I don't begrudge Cally one iota for trying to get the most possible...or for Sather saying "Screw that"...

Yeah, Cally doesn't seem as aggressive this year as in the past, but let's not sneeze at what he has done in the past...Heck, take a look at his last two years...29 in a full season in 2011/12 (~35 the in the NHL) and 16 in the shortened 2013 FULL season (again, ~ 35th in the NHL)...He has fallen back this year with an injury but 1 year does not a trend make...Yes, the GMs have to consider it, but they also have to consider what he has done before......especially in comparison to guys around his age who just got FA contracts or last minute extensions...and we know NHL UFA contracts are mostly not for what you will do, but what you have done..........

Even if you see them as "bad" contracts, existing contracts are what sets the parameters in the eyes of agents and the NHLPA....Ala Clarkson and his 5.5 mill deal...And then there's a guy like Bergeron who has been every bit as important to his team as Cally has in the last 5- 6 years...Different type of players but both leaders, both kill penalties, Bergeron is great at FOs while Cally is great at BS/hits...total team players...and they have played basically the same amount of games....and Cally has scored more goals with Bergeron having more assists.....yes, different type of player but definitely somebody that can be used as a guideline and he's getting 6.5-6.75 mill per yer for many years...Take away some cash for the Cup if you want...

Again. 6 Mill per year or even slightly above seems fine by me...Sather should offer it and let Cally say yes or no...Cally wants more, good luck elsewhere.....Trade him for Stewart (plus a high pick) or St. Louis (sending a pick) and be done with it

I don't know. Maybe it's in his mind somewhere, but I doubt that he has solidly set plans for what he's going to do when he's 30. So much can change. Players come and players go, franchises rise and fall, players get hurt... the league has too much movement for a player to decide what he's doing 6 years out and stick to it. Say Minnesota is rebuilding by then and NYR is competitive. Say McD gets the C here down the line. Say some Minnesota defenseman step up big time over the next few years and they end up with insane depth. There are just too many moving parts.

Plus Mcdonagh might have a wife and children who are attached to NYC as their hometown by then. A lot can change.

I think the guy that Callahan should be compared to is Dustin Brown who just signed an 8year deal with at $5.875/yr. That seems very reasonable. I don't know if I would go that many years but 6x6 would be perfect.

I agree with everything you said.

Love Cally and don't want to see him go but its a little tough to compare him to Brown. First off Brown plays every game. I know Cally's style lends itself to injury but the fact is he is always hurt, and Brown is not. Brown has missed maybe a handful of games over the last 9 or 10 seasons. He's also bigger. Maybe his size is what helps him stay healthier, and maybe that health is why he has better numbers but either way, these are all the things you have to take into account in a Cap sport.

Again, I love the guy but if Brown gets 5.75, then Cally should get 5.5 or if he's lucky, 5.75 because of his younger age. I'd give 6 if he took 4-5 years. He's going to be hurt along the way too.

I know we're all on the edge of our seats, but the more I think about this, the more I think the rumor mill doesn't even really start going until this weekend. Then, we start to see our first deals maybe on Monday.

I'd love for this all to be over already so we could dissect the deals/lack thereof, what the short term/long term consequences are and how Slats screwed up/robbed the other side... but unfortunately, I'm afraid we have 5-7 more days of this.

Vomit. I can't see Callahan making 6 million a year. Under torts? Sure. He would be a much more effective player. His role is diminished under AV.

Tonight's offering of Insider Trading with @GinoRedaTSN @DarrenDreger et moi. Enjoy: http://www.tsn.ca/videohub/?collection=72&show=297167

Video talks about Girardi and Callahan. Dredger mentions Tampa bay in passing regarding Callahan rumors, but neither of them outright confirm or deny anything.

So nothing new.

Thanks for nothing again Ail, you're gifted.

SNY Rangers Blog has text summary.

“I’m told that it’s 99.9% guaranteed that Ryan Callahan will get traded by the New York Rangers. There are many teams involved in this process. We know that the St. Louis Blues have been the most consistent in showing interest. There is some connection to the Tampa Bay Lightning and some other teams as well.†(Darren Dreger on Insider Trading)

On Dan Girardi, “there is an on-going back and forth on Dan Girardi as well. Many predicted that this deal would be done by now. If he isn’t signed by March 5th, the trading deadline there is also a 99.9% chance that he gets traded. (Darren Dreger on Insider Trading)

“You are right Darren. There were no talks over the Olympic break between the Rangers and Ryan Callahan. There is on-going dialogue with Girardi. It seems to be a little bit of a difference in term, maybe a little less than $500,000 a year in money but they are working and trying to get that done. (Bob McKenzie on Insider Trading)
