Yeah. But he's been a GM since like 1994, Sather forever, and the two have never made a trade.
Plus Spezza can't skate anymore. Not that I wouldnt take him :)

Boomer is right in that MSG vortex; he had Klein way before it happened. I gotta think that Marty tweet from yesterday pretty much says it.

It's blowing my mind actually LOL; cant seem to stop posting and need to work 6am!

Anyways, Todd Harvey is from Sheffield, Ontario, close to where I grew up (as a Rangers fan surrounded by Leafs and Canadiens fans). If you know Todd, say hi to him!

Was looking at his Marty tweet from yesterday, and he has a conversation with a Devils fan who thinks he is talking about news on Broduer, but maybe it's about St. Louis.

Marty, Marty , Marty in a good way? Hard to believe.

I'm confused as to why a team would give us a player who is a 'tremendous upgrade' for a rental in Callahan. Something about this player coming in must be flawed. Whether it be another rental, a team looking to move a bloated contract aka an overpaid player, someone having a real down season or a player with motivation issues. I mean I figured Callahan would be more likely to fetch a package of prospects and/or pick(s). Boomer also said the team trading for Callahan, is trading for him as a rental. Something doesn't seem to add up. If its a bloated contract coming in, that makes little sense cause we could just give that contract to Callahan. I know Sather is a savvy trader, but I dont know how he'd pull something like this off.

What if the player coming back requested a trade?

MSL today >>>>>>>>>>> Callahan today.

but MSL will be done in a year or 2. whats the point?

Well, if we're talking long term asset management, and we're losing Cally anyway to free agency, but MSL is signed very reasonably this year & next, then in theory you have the money they dont give Callahan (and presumably wont give MSL in two years) to go after a UFA.
And it's like $20m at least. Not that MSG has any shortage.
Who knows, maybe Danny Kristo is crankin' by then and they dont even need outside help. But if not, they have some flex.

Short term, it's a temporary fix to a lousy situation (one not of the Rangers' making, IMO).

Pretty good fix though. :)

MSL for Callahan and conditional 2nd or 3rd round if he doesn't resign.

If this does happen, something tells me St. Louis told Yzerman he wanted out. Shoot i can empathize with Marty:

'if you don't pick me for your olympic team knowing me, seeing me everyday, it makes me feel that you don't believe in me in the thick of it, and bc of that I don't want to go to battle for your team.

Either trade me now or in the offseason.'

Yzerman decides to take a shot on Callahan and a post season push for the tampa fan base.

I love watching St. Louis play, would love to have him.

But I want Callahan to take less $$$ and stay. You win championships with players like Ryan Callahan.

That doesn't mean I'm saying Callahan ought to or should takes less. Thats just what I want. I don't have money to lose in it. But I like having Ryan Callahan play for the team I grew up rooting for. He plays the game the way that I see/feel it naturally. Like the instincts I would have in any given situation, from my lifetime of growing up watching hockey and playing it. I'll miss having him in the fold

Interesting...In most cases this is kept under wraps which would connect to Boomer's suprising/shocking mention. But with that said, do we know of any players that have requested a trade?

MSL would be a HUGE upgrade over Cally this year....but terrible long term asset management.

I could see why this would be a controversial trade.

Yeah that sounded like Boomer's thoughts on Ott. Ott, Carcillo, Marchand, Clarkson are rats. Guys like that generate a lot of buzz, but none a upgrades.

My gut tells me the Rangers are looking for a big center. Maybe Spezza from OTT who has been somewhat disenfranchised for the last couple of seasons.

Lets not forget OTT has seen what they can do without him last year, and fans in OTT have had their pitchforks directed at him. Kyle Turris plays with their best wingers, not Spezza.

OTT needs salary relief in a bad way. They won't be re-signing Spezza after next year.

As a lifelong Ottawa fan, I don't think any of what you posted is accurate.

Spezza hasn't disenfranchised at all over "the past few years" He was JUST named the team captain over longtime veteran Phillips. Teams don't do that when they're unhappy with a player.

Two seasons ago when Ottawa met New York in the playoffs, Spezza was 5th or 6thin Hart voting. It's hard to be mad at a player who is a finalist for the Hart. Last season he was injured and fans were unhappy, sure, but he's been doing well this year.

If you think some HFboards fans trade threads means that fans are unhappy, you should review those threads and you'll see that it's all 2-3 guys making them. Furthermore you'll see that they are widely derided by the majority of fans. Every fanbase has outliers.

Also, Ottawa doesn't need salary relief. They have much higher revenue streams going into next year than in the past with new media deals. The Owner and the GM JUST made statements that the team will be trying to acquire a player at the expense of prospects and that they are looking to contend. You don't do that when you ahve money troubles.

Even if they WERE in financial trouble, acquiring Callahan does nothing to improve them. Spezza's deal is still cheap comparatively to what other top centres earn and in the same range as what Callahan is seeking. Trading for Callahan doesn't improve their situation at all.

Want to make an avatar bet that Spezza will be a Senator in a couple more years?

I remember Stamkos that day of the announcement saying something like MSL said he's never been angrier in his whole life LOL; It may have even been Marty who said it, l cant remember 100%.
But I remember seeing his face, and he was burning.
He had a right to be.

It's one thing if you're some over-the-hiller and your GM doesnt fight for you.
But he's the reigning NHL points leader! Not to mention your captain.
That was effed up. I dont know why Yzerman would move against MSL like that, unless it was just a collossal f/u. So I wouldnt doubt he asked out.

Could definitely see Ottawa both wanting to move Spezza's contract and thinking they could make a run with Callahan.

Back issues come to mind when I think of recent talk of him I've heard/read.

Could see the Rangers willing to take a chance on a 1st line center though for sure

All I was thinking about at first when I got into this thread was Brad Marchand, and that it would have to be some kind of lockerroom conflict, or sudden conflict with management.

Hmm.

The problem is, Spezza is not the guy to take a chance on. Even if he cleared his last injury, he is well into the downswing of his career. I've watched him, just not a guy to go big-time for.

MSL would be a HUGE upgrade over Cally this year....but terrible long term asset management.

It's really not. There wont be an asset in two years LOL
Remember, it's the market & Callahan driving this thing into unreasonable territory (though even he's not wrong. He will get the big big money somewhere) It's just one of those things.

The money becomes the asset in this case; and the Rangers save not just anything over the 5 yrs/30M they offered for another day, but anything over MSL's 2yrs, 11+m.
So it's a lot not spent, could be $40-50m if Cally gets close to a Clarkson contract;
IMO not much more they can do. They get a terrific player short term and have the cash on hand when time comes to replace him.
They could even deal St Louis next year @ deadline time and get prospects/picks - and still have the money.
More I think about it, they CAN'T deal Cally now for futures cause they're in the thick of it.
So take the better player now, pocket the cash, and maybe move MSL next year for futures or let him walk and spend $$ elsewhere.
Pretty frickin' shrewd.

Good point.

But honestly man if Stewart and 2nd was their best other option.

St. Louieeeee without a thought second.

Exactly, if you believe your a champion or whatever you want to call IT, like I'm sure St. Louis does, you don't want to put your energy your efforts in collaboration with people who don't believe in your ability to do what your striving to, especially when those people have such integral roles. It just doesn't feel right.

I think you might be right. When I saw Kreiders chart (awesome) and saw the Q and A side by side. I read it as boomer saying he wouldn't like Ott if he wasn't on the team, think carcillo

I am reading the "think Carcillo" as a little hint, going as far as he can without getting himself into any trouble. He can't come out and say who or what team is involved, but maybe referring to Carcillo in a sense as to where he played and why it would be a shock and would result in a Twitter frenzy.

Not to often NY and Philly do business, let alone the trade of a captain to your (well, one of your) bitter rivals.

Then again, could just have been in reference to hating guy's like Carcillo when they're not on your team.. Guess we'll see.... Should be interesting to see how things unfold over the next few days.

it helps to read the question and answer in context at once, as opposed to seeing boomer's tweet on its own.

it went like this

Q'I like Ott. your thoughts

A If he aint wearing a Ranger jersey I can't stand him. Think Carcillo.

To me, Boomer's entire tweet there was about and in reference to Ott.

I don't know if I really hate anyone THAT much.. That's the tough part, there's guys I hate playing against, but that's different. I could see Marchand garnering some big hate.. Where's Sherlock with some deductions when you need him?

Another thing that just popped out to me from one of the Q and A tweets.

Question: How do you feel about the player we are getting?

Boomer: Major respect for him.

Look Boomer rubs shoulders with a lot of prominent dudes. For him to use that term, the player is well-established, and has done major things in hockey.

It sounds like its a top notch player. And Its the east, Callahan would be traded as a rental. and there are only some many names that fit the bill.

Maybe only three names. or is it two?

looking at all of boomer's hints, ive concluded it just has to be st.louis, all of the other guys mentioned ott, simmonds, neill dont fit, first of all they are not ''tremendous' as boomer wrote, and they hardly qualify as being a ''shocking'' trade as boomer puts it. st.louis fits all the categories

VERY intriguing. I will however cry if it's Clarkson. The guy is useless and has a terrible contract. Please someone tell me that's unlikely.

Yeah, but who hates St Louis? Anyone?
