most of us would like all of our players back but their play this year will earn them contracts that we probably cannot afford. Stralman will be a top 3 dman on the market this summer. Do we really want to give him a big deal long term to be our 4th best defenseman?

If that deal is 4-5 years @ 3.5-3.75 million, absolutely.

Similar contract to what Oduya got from Chicago. Similar players actually.

We have a massive log jam at left d with Mcdonagh staal Moore Allen and skjei... I think we should trade Moore ++ for a center for can play the point on the power play. I don't think there is tht much difference between Moore and Allen in quality of play

Allen plays a lot of RD.

I guess I'm not seeing the reasoning behind moving a young player like McIlrath either. If they can re-sign Stralman and Staal, that makes Moore and Klein clear redundant pieces with players like Skjei, McIlrath and Allen developing well. Cheap 3rd pairing players.

time frame matters. the 3 you mentioned may or may not be nhl ready in the fall.

klein is wrapped up to a very nice deal. moving him for an unproven kid who may or may not be ready both isnt smart and doesnt work numbers wise. hes a nice affordable reliable 3rd pair partner for a guy like j moore.

john moore has a ton of game. he lacks some experience but showed flashes last year of a guy who can play both sides of the blue line. his wheels alone make him attractive. hes a wonderful skater.

unless or until those 3 young guys show they are better than klein or moore- who are both very affordable btw, you keep the guys the coaches know can play.

carrying 2 rooks in the top 6 isnt gonna happen anyway. its mcilrath, allen or andersson. only 1.

and thats assuming they are better than klein, moore and diaz. not sure they will be.

sorry, but a deal involving mcilrath, our 2nd this year and another asset for a young pivot still makes too much sense.

I was speaking of moving forward, not next year.

I would be fine with moving McIlrath if he actually had any value. I'm not sure he does. Maybe for a PMD reclamation project. I don't think he has much value honestly.

Only thing that gives me hope is the career path of Michael Sauer.

Why? How much have you seen of him?

Well, the games he was up here were not pretty, but hearing about what his strengths are. Oh great he can clear the front of the net, hes tough. Great.

I don't want a slow player on the backend in this NHL if I can avoid it. I don't want a player whos main strength is the fact that hes big and tough. This isn't the 90s.

I was much more impressed by Conor Allen.

Been to several HFD games myself, and Allen was by far the best defenseman playing in all of those games... Aaron Johnson was comparable, but nowhere near as fluid and consistent with defensive position and offensive instinct

So you haven't seen much then.

He isn't slow. He is more than just tough and a crease clearer.

McIlrath is 22 yrs old. This kind of player will require patience. If you think he's in the Mcquaid/Erskine mold then you should realize those guys were 25 & 26 when they were considered full time NHL'ers.

If teams would overpay his worth I'd consider it, but for now his value is in the prospect pool. I'm expecting a way bigger jump in his game next season, with plenty of time to prepare.

They could easily go with Staal-Klein and Moore-Diaz as the bottom 4.

If, come deadline time, they don't feel 100% comfortable with it, make a trade for a rental whose cap hit isn't on the books all season.

Yup, and also Allen could prove to be NHL ready and slot in. I don't see a big need for a Stralman replacement should he leave us. D is definitely our strong point.

They will probably go with that to start, with the idea that Allen or McI could steal Diaz/Moore or maybe even Klein's spot. McI plays the right side and Allen plays both. And since Diaz is probably the guy that sits having two potential replacements, either to start or mid-year, is nice.

Or they could add a guy at the deadline.

Its not a bad position to start with. You've still got 2 great D pairs and one serviceable one.

while not ideal this scenario does put a right handed shot on the PP. would probably help replace richards PP production and we can move either mcd or MSL to richards spot.

Yeah, I dislike that bottom-4 immensely.

Thoughts on trading strallmans rights, mcilrath and mayb another player to Edmonton for perhaps rnh

A Staal-Diaz pairing is not a shabby 2nd pairing in the NHL.

I think it'd be a solid 2nd pairing... Diaz and Stralman are both servicable 2nd-3rd pair D players... Diaz has the offensive jump that we need and we don't have to fork out any assets to get him.. on top of that, he'll cost less than what Stralman costs NOW to secure for several years.

Secondly, Staal is, by AV's own definition, a shutdown defender... clearly AV likes to have each pairing consist of a mobile defenseman and a stay-at-home defenseman. Staal-Diaz fits that mold no problem.

HOWEVER, especially after checking his stats, I'm not sure about how much potential offensive ability is there. Never scored more than 3 goals in a season, never more than 11 assists in a season. Then again, a 20 point defenseman isn't bad for a 5th rounder.

Lastly, though I am not so hopeful yet, I'd also like to remind those about Ryan Haggerty... I think the kid is solid and definitely has a spot in the LW on this team in 2 seasons (not next, the following).

I'd be so pissed if they traded him away for nothing after all this waiting and development. Still hoping this kid will serve the biggest dish of crow ever.

Why the 2nd pair? Maybe just put Diaz with Staal.

Sub par puck moving capabilities.

I don't like replacing Stralman with Diaz on that second pair. I don't know why people are so comfortable with it. Diaz is a decent NHLer, but really nothing more. He shouldn't be on our second pairing.
