I guess it really comes down to which players the team considers most important, how the team fares in the next few weeks, and which direction the team wants to go next fall. There's no immediate replacement for Staal or Zuccarello in the organization, so unless those replacements come back in trade, we'd likely be trading a cap crunch in 2015 for a major step back in 2014.

Yes, losing Staal would be an immediate step back. The Rangers are likely to find out that there is a price to pay for success.

Bern- Good pts. I am not sure I buy that a line with Hags-Miller-MSL works that well.

Hags and Richards work, and it's the later that has chemistry with the former. Richards and MSL works. But MSL and Hags are not naturals together. MSL definitely would prefer to play with a PF.

I think it would make a lot more sense to play a PF with Miller and MSL.

Pizza- A lot o players are valuble to this team and would be missed if out.

I do not think Kreider is as high on that list as you indicate. Not to take anything away from him, but any player in his mold just need a lot of support.

We have two players that have shown they can make their line mates better. Zucc & Kreider. They are self contained units imo. I think they would perform well almost with anyone.

Ola, thanks, I hope my process of elimination can lead to some worthwhile, constructive debate.

BTW, no harm no foul,
but if you check, I was going for
KREIDER w/ Miller w MSL ---- speed, speed, speed

Had Hags with his fellows Swedes --- Hagelin - Lindberg - Fast

so we were on the same page there!:yo:

Neither was Dubinsky. Stepan wasn't supposed to be ready. etc.

Lindberg or Miller need to make the team next season. One will be ready.

Fast or Kristo should be able to make the team as well. (2) spots.

Finally!

Another vote for giving our young uns every chance.

I see Lindberg, Miller, Fast pushing out Richards, Dorsett; expect someone else also to be traded.

I agree. Only get rid of valuable assets / rebuild after winning. We are very close now. Just give it a couple of more years. Also, rebuilding without 1st round picks for 2014 and 2015 might be tricky.

The best way to move forward is to either buy out Richards, or let some players walk. Keeping the team together is only possible if more than 1 person sacrifices some money for the greater good, so to speak.

Ideal, sure, but not realistic.
Waiting to unload legit valuable assets usually diminishes their value, and risks injury during that extra year/2.

Outside the core --- McD, Kreider --- who returns the biggest profit?
We pump that profit back into our roster and our system.

The Hawks are doing it, so can we.

If, and these are big ifs, a few of the prospects came up and blossomed in to some bonified top 6 talent next year, I could see them considering moving players if they thought they were going to be expendable. This is hardly likely let aloned gauranteed. Especially if this team makes the finals. I think Richards is the only player whose future is certain regardless.

Concur to the extent Richards due to $ numbers is a no brainer, regardless of his play, and other than that, there are no guarantees; there is risk with several if not all of the decision paths we could take.

The ? is to choose the one that makes the most sense on paper beforehand at the time. You could still have a bazinga moment, but at least you took your best shot.

Yeah, I've been advocating not replacing Richards and letting Miller and Lindberg duke it out for the 3C spot. Resign D Moore and he can hold it down until the deadline if neither pan out.

The ESPN story was written by a Hockey Prospectus writer

Ryan O'Reilly

Brayden Schenn

Reilly Smith

Mats Zuccarello

Offer sheet: 6 years, $36 million

Compensation: First-round pick, second-round pick, third-round pick

With limited cap room -- nearly $55 million committed to just 14 players, Henrik Lundqvist's new contract kicking in and prospects on the rise -- the Rangers would have to make a tough call on whether to match this offer or spend the money elsewhere.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/10858604/ryan-oreilly-top-rfa-targets-offseason-nhl

That $55M includes Miller and Fasth. Its $53,187,500 for 12 players. 6 forwards. 4 D. 2 G.

If we signed Zucc to a 6 year contract worth 6m its steal in 6 years. Admittedly, it would hurt us in the coming year or two, but it's a no brainer.

Depending on which team extends the offer sheet, that 1st could be a realistic shot at McDavid. It probably would, as there aren't many contenders who'd throw 6M at Zucc. I'd still like to keep him obviously, but that's a hard decision.

that writer also has brayden schenn getting a 5 year 30m dollar offersheet. he had 41 points this year and flyers fans think hes a total moron on the ice.

Any chance we make a move for the 1st overall pick? I kno Florida is willing to trade it. And anyone worth taking there if we do move up?

lol no way someone offers zuke 6 years 36m and then gives up a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick.

I'd be stunned if a team did. It would be insanity. If they do, there is no way I match it, especially since that would tie up their cap beyond sanity. Even if they did have the cap space, I still wouldn't match it. Save the money and get the pick(s).

He's a good player, been productive recently, but not worth 6M per year for 6 years.

6x6? goodbye Zuuc

I think Zuuc gets a 3.5-4mil a year contract. hes worth that...not much more..not to us anyways, when he's got 2 superstar RWers ahead of him...besides, look at what MSL makes...guys are gonna have to take discounts to stay...end of story. it may cost us years instead of dollars to keep some guys.

6x6 for zucc ? Since when do players that have one good NHL season behind them get offered that kind of insanity contracts

Yeah, I don't see anyone offer sheeting Slats to start with.

Zucc can go to arbitration, he won't have to wait for a offer sheet. It seems like there is some extreme amature behind that article. Zucc will file for arbitration if not signed, just in case. And a player has to file for arbitration on July 5th if I remember correctly. Like 8 players have signed an offer sheet after the lockout (almost 9 years). The only player who did it in close connection to July 1 was David Backes. You at least want to wait where you can make an offer that cannot be matched by a team without making room under the cap.

As long as they recoup solid assets then I'm fine with it

Yeah, but this is the downside with Slats extreme reluctance to resign players to longer contracts.

Strålman could easily have been resigned by now, and then traded like at the draft. Now, we don't have all that many players to trade that would recoup assets. Staal, Zucc, Brass and Klein are basically the only players that would save us some money and could be moved. Dorsett too maybe, but we are talking about like 800k at the most with him. I mean, Step is so cheap that we basically don't save anything by trading him. The rest can't be moved.

That would cost at least one core piece and then some. We're in the ECF right now, so there really is no point in dismantling the current team to get the 1st overall.

I'd like to sign Kreider to more than a bridge deal, but that could be difficult if we want to keep most of the team together - which I do because I love this team (and not just because of their recent success in the playoffs).

Hypothetical summer:

Re-sign Zucc, Brass, and Kreider to multi-year deals worth an average of $4M.

Re-sign Strålman to a multi-year deal with an AAV of $3.7M.

Re-sign Pouliot to a 2-3 year deal with an AAV of $2.3M.

Re-sign Boyle to his current AAV of $1.7M.
May not be feasible, but remember that he got his current deal on the back of a 21G season which he hasn't come close to since.

Re-sign John Moore to a 2-year deal with an AAV of $1.2M.

Re-sign Diaz and Carcillo to 1-year contracts of $1M.

Trade Dorsett to a team obsessed with "character" (like Edmonton) for a decent pick.

Dominic Moore will likely be too expensive to keep, in the long term you can't tie up too much money in your 4th line. Especially if you're paying a 3rd pairing D almost $3M.

Promote Miller, Lindberg, and Fast.

This gives us:

Considering that the cap will likely be in the $69M-$70M range, we may be over.

Remedies may be a bridge deal for Kreider in the $2.5M range, cheaper contracts for Carcillo/Diaz (or letting one/both go), or trading Klein for futures and go for a Moore-Diaz 3rd pairing.
