At that cap hit? I wouldn't.

Carolina can eat a 1M 1.5M, it expires in two seasons. Since being named captain and signed to a total of $70M by Carolina, Eric Staal has lead them to one playoff appearance. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but he wouldn't have to be this team's top gun.

Whys thus college kid bodies? Dman close to signing w nyr per snyrangersblog

More of an offensive D. Played for this year's National Championship Union College and was a team leader on and off the ice. 23-24 years old. Would be a very good signing IMO. Rangers have few if any at all draft prospects turning pro next year and a number of rfa's and ufa's who won't be re-signed--that's why they signed Haggerty and McCarthy (two top undrafted college free agents) and potentially Latta and Baker (both Hartford ATO's) and Bodie. It's an alternative way of rebuilding the talent base.

With the severe lack of top end defensive prospects in this year's draft, grabbing blueliners of any caliber is not a bad idea.

NYR have Allen, Skjei, and McIlrath in the pipes. Unless you count Graves, a longshot, that's it.

Going into next season--the questions are whether Stralman (UFA), Diaz (UFA) Falk (RFA) come back. The Rangers have McDonagh, Girardi, Staal, Klein signed and Moore (RFA) will certainly be qualified. Allen could push for a job and if Stralman or Diaz don't return you can almost expect that the Rangers will sign a NHL quality free agent. Our defense is not a worry but the Rangers need to make sure they have enough depth. McIlrath is next in line and Bodie pretty much IMO would go to the top of the food chain after that if the Rangers do sign him. And then there is Skjei who is coming along very well but I expect will do another year at Minnesota U.

Nothing wrong with signing free agents if you have openings. If they develop into NHL worthy players--they'll make your team or they're assets you can move for other assets. Never can have enough quality defensemen IMO.

I agree with the bolded, but they need to be signing some more offensive upgrades for the future... It seems like most of these free agents sans Haggerty and McCarthy are defensemen, plus we have a glut of decent defensemen in the pipe

Hope Bodie has already put on some weight or he needs to hit the gym. Union has him listed at 6'0 165lbs.

Otherwise I like what I've read/saw.

Yeah, but like we have seen with Troey Krug for example, as a bit of a principle, when you are "not strong" you almost get to a point where it don't matter how weak you are.

A D 6'1 185 lbs has to play defense one way, ie not rely on his strength, and the same basically applys to a D that is 5'11 175. You don't often go, with a D that is 5'10 for example, oh if he only was 6'0.

A D like Bodie would be useful if he can master the game with the puck and be an offensive factor. Defensively, he will have to find a way to get by without being able to outpower forwards. The same would more or less have been the case had he been 6'0 180 instead of 6'0 165.

Personally I view most of the d-men in our system as long shots. Our development glut comes down to Allen, McIlrath and Skjei. Guys like Hughes, Graves, Noreau, Donnay, Andersson IMO are all long shots--most if not all won't make it.

Would work, if we can get Staal at those numbers.

i think Brian Boyle, assuming hes not demanding a ton, would be a huge loss to this team...maybe even moreso than Prust was.

I feel Boyle is highly over-rated by some. A good 4th line player but not worth more than 2m/y or 3rd line minutes.

I think you're going to find most people are either going to underrate him or overrate him. I'd predict NHL GMs to heavily be on the "overrate" side of the spectrum because of his size, PK ability, and a misconception that he's a tough guy because of his size. He's a great 4th liner that's going to be paid to play on a 3rd line (or higher).

When you consider our team direction since we made AV our coach, I'm not sure if Boyle is the type of bottom-6 player that we want to overpay for. We would be best suited to try to nab another Benoit Pouliot or an under-the-radar grinder who will be cheaper.

With that cap going up next year and the following ones, Brian Boyle is absolutely worth $2 million per year. Possibly even $2.5 million per year. When Prust signed his deal the cap was lower and the type of physical game he plays is more demanding so of course his salary was outrageous. But Boyle's will be a bargain in the coming years when you see more 4th line players making the same money. You need players like Boyle not only on the ice but in the room.

I want Boyler on this team. I feel like much of the critisizm coming his way is his lack of willing to punch people in the face. Hockey is fortunately moving to a place where this is no longer needed, with more protection from the officials and less injection of behavioural stimulants due to anti doping.

Hes a guy that seems to play better when the games get tougher. If he takes like 3 years $6M total, the Rangers would be better off for it.

I wouldn't have a problem with that contract.

And if he loses his job to a kid, it's a very tradable deal.

Unfortunately, he will most likely make closer to 3 on a 4 year deal.

The Rangers may have to give a little unfortunately. Because as much as many want Brad Richards bought out, he still offers solid veteran leadership in that locker room. And if you buy him out AND let Boyle go it will be even more detrimental to that room. The problem with this team the last couple years is a lot of turnover. Depending on how the playoffs go, you may need to lock up Boyle. If the playoffs don't go so well then Boyle is a goner probably.

We probably has to be the one team of 30 that bids the higest for Brian Boyle to keep him. In that environment, you can't rule out that he will get 12 for 4 years or just below that. All it takes is one single team that thinks he is worth that much, and we have to match it.

I definitely agree with the motivation mentioned by everyone that wants to keep Boyle. The turnover on the roster. Boyle's value for us. Etc etc etc.

But, when you get to a point where you have to pay a 2-2.5m premium to keep a 4th lineer, it starts to hurt you. I mean, you can like have a 2nd lineer that makes 3m and a 4th lineer that makes 3m or you can have a 2nd lineer that makes 5.5m and a 4th lineer that makes 500k, more or less.

You need depth up front and depth on defense. But. Its also possible to accomplish that by not spending money. Its a lot harder to accomplish what it takes on the top 3 lines and top 2 pairings without spending money... I think its going to be tough to keep Brian Boyle. Unfortuneately.

I would really like to keep the 4th line of Boyle-Moore-Dorsett/Carcillo together because I think this is the most effective 4th line the team has had in recent memory. I think they will show their value even more in the playoffs.
