He won't be worth it to keep, but it's impossible to deny that having Richards made us better the last 3 seasons than not having Richards.

Whether that was worth the opportunity cost of 6.67 hit a season is a whole other matter.
Ignoring the actual dollar outflow, which I find easy because it's not my money, I definitely think the Richards contract will be a net positive.

Rick Nash and MSL were both trade acquisitions that were supposed to put us "over the edge," to quote Sather.

To make yet another trade for an aging star such as E. Staal would be asinine. The organization needs to forge a different path if they want to build a formidable offense that can actually score goals consistently. Focusing their resources on drafting an developing their own players is a good start, though that would actually require patience. If the team absolutely has to make a trade, then it should be targeting young cost-controlled forwards who are entering their prime rather than players with big cap hits whose best years may be behind them.

True, at least for two of those three seasons he was better than any realistic alternative would've been. In the end he will cost Dolan a big stash of money, but we haven't lost any assets, so overall he was still a good signing - as long as you aren't Dolan.

Yeah, definitely. Quite frankly, we missed out big time on acquiring Seguin, he would have set us up beautifully for years to come...and, yes, I would glady have moved Kreider+ to get him if it were necessary. I think Callahan/Kreider would be a very comparable package to Eriksson/Smith.

I was merely throwing out there the suggestion about the Canes eating salary for discussion. I didn't discuss value or assets or anything of the sort. Geez people are so quick with the knee-jerk reactions. I know we don't have the assets or at least can't afford to give up what assets we have left. Just making discussion until the game tomorrow night.

I really don't know if they'd have moved him within the East though. I have a hard time seeing them striking a deal with us of that magnitude.

Well someone has to replace Richards...

So we're looking at:

1. Signing Paul Stastny
2. Signing
3 way trade between NYR/CAR/Another team to get Staal to NYR

yay..

To me JT Miller replaces Richards. It's essentially a 3rd line, you can fill it from within.

Stepan replaces Richards at the point...or St. Louis can replace him.

I'm sorry but if Stepan Brassard and Miller are our top 3 centers next year it's gonna be a long year

Yeah, I don't think the Rangers need to clamor for a Richards replacement and I really hope they don't. Miller should suffice but we all know this team's management and what will happen.

Don't expect Statsny will be available. Even if he were...there will be 28 other teams potentially vying for him and I don't think it's a good idea to get in the middle of a bidding war for a guy like him.

Too much emphasis is put on what the lineup is going to be to start the season. More important IMO to worry about the lineup at the end. Richards gets bought out because it's the right thing to do. Doubt seriously Eric Staal is coming here--we're going to have to raid our youth again and I don't think that's a good idea.

The Rangers can get by next year at least for a while I would think with Stepan, Brassard etc. Miller should make the team next year and take either the 3rd or the 4th. We can run with that for a while and a move for another center can be made during the season. Personally I'd have no problem bringing Boyle and Moore back. I think Moore likes NYC--not sure what Boyle has in mind or what some other team might offer him.

Richards leaving leaves us with a whole in the 2C/3C spot. With the money being freed up from Richards leaving we could get a Moulson to fill our LW problem and then have a competent winger with a Miller or Brassard to soften the blow.

The Rangers #1 objective in the next calendar year should be to acquire assets and parlay them into a young #1 center. It should be a trade objective just like they locked into MSL.

If you want it bad enough, you can make it happen.

Someone out there has a sub-25 year old #1 center prospect with a good chance of panning out that they'll trade for some package of players that we have or can obtain.

It's just a question of finding that team.

That's a cornerstone, franchise player. Why would any team trade that away or have an excess? They are so hard to get.
