BRB has mentioned this many times and I totally agree, Sather can't do things in moderation. This team needed more skill. He trades for Nash, moves Gaborik for Brassard and Moore, trades for MSL. Now this team has absolutely no balls. Where are the guys inflicting any pain on the other team? Letang and Martin are probably recovering during this series.

The best teams in the NHL develop their own elite talent. No surprise. The Rangers can't seem to do that consistently.

And this is why it perturbs me that the Rangers have traded away so many picks in recent years. They seem to be heading in the opposite direction and are making "one player away" moves instead of stockpiling picks.

But again we will be reminded that late first round picks, let alone 2nds or 3rds, have a slim chance of making it. Practically worthless. So they are more valuable as draft chips. Since that has worked so swimmingly for the last, I don't know, forever.

Makes sense. May as well give away all of the chances for any sort of future

while i do agree with this. this thinking leads to a endless cycle of one last piece moves like the nash trade and the gaborik trade. because the team constantly trades future picks then they won't want to tank a season because they won't get their own pick. so tanking would be a 5-7 year process rather than a 2-3 year process (giving time for top pick to develop) so in order to tank you need a gm that is smart and wont trade picks constantly and when glen sather retires or dies (whichever comes first) the guy that follows him is going to have a mess of a team on his hands. another big part of tanking is trading away you good players for picks and when you think about glen sather has paid homegrown players a little bit and they should be easy to trade(mcdonagh, stepan, girardi, staal,j moore, mza, cam talbot, and lundqvist) those guys arent the issue with the current team. although they could begin to play bad and become a problem. the part that will be hard to fix will be the contracts glen signed "big name ufas" to and the big "superstars" he traded for. they usually have massive long contracts with nmc's and do awful when the come to new york. and those guys will most likely be the issue. for the long term i suggest keeping the core of the rangers to the homegrown guys above and trading the big name guys like nash and msl in order to help grow our organizational depth as we adapt to drafting for a different coaching style. short term i think we should trade carl hagelin and kevin klein to see if we can get any talented prospects or a more grity forward(not like a dorsett but more of a bryan bickel)

Sather went for it trading for St. Louis. The Rangers' window is open until next season. They weren't going to win anything this year under a new coach and new system. I would have been happy going into this playoffs to win a round. They already did that. Par for the course. Losing three consecutive first rounders and two out of three 2nd's would cripple our prospect pool. Blessing in disguise in that regard if they're bounced by Pittsburgh.

Buy out Richards. See if there is a taker for Nash. New GM incoming in Washington. Perhaps something can be built around Nash and Ovechkin.

I'm very much on board with trading Nash this offseason.

Zucc + MSL are fine taking up the void he leaves.

Could get a good prospect + 1st for him. Go for it.

I don't ever want to see Rick Nash in a Rangers uniform again. Period.

I'm sure Stepan is a player we want going forward either.

I'm usually a huge Stepan supporter as I generally like guys who can make brainy plays despite limitations in physicality, skating, etc. But I seriously begin to have doubts about him. I mean yeah, he's only 23, but he's been in the league for 4 season and he has yet to do something big in the playoffs (okay, there was game 6 vs Ottawa). I seriously think he's been our weakest center in the playoffs. Richards and Moore have done their share. Brassard has been meh, but he came up clutch in game 1 and made some nice passes on which his linemates couldn't finish. Stepan is MIA since game 2 vs Philly.
To be clear, I'm not advocating trading the guy unless we can package him + something for a nice upgrade at center. I just question if he can do enough for me to be happy with him being this teams #1 center for the long haul.

Here come the ignorant posts about trading players like Stepan and how stuck we are with a goalie like Lundqvist.
Stepan is part of the solution. He's not the problem. You put him with a winger or maybe even two wingers that can finish and you'll be more than happy. In fact, they should give him the A next season.
Stepan along with Krieder, McD and Lundqvist aren't going anywhere. Face it.

Remember, people who have differing views to your aren't necessarily ignorant.

I agree that it's highly unlikely Stepan is going anywhere, the head office just needs to accept that he's not really a #1, game breaking center, just a good #2 who goes through some slumps like most players (there is nothing wrong with this).

In 2011-2012 he spent more than 60% of his shifts with 41 goal scorer Gaborik, in 2012-13 he had Nash on his wing at least 35% of the time and Callahan at least 55% and this season he at least one of Nash, Kreider, MZA or MSL on his wing all season. He gets the support (at least the best the Rangers can offer), he just is what he is.

I'm scared they give Stastny a ton after buying Richards out. I'd sign legwand instead for cheap

I think Stralman priced himself off the team for next year (good for him). There's not enough room to give all of the RFAs (Brassard, Kreider, Zucc) raises, resign Pouliot, sign a 2C/3C to replace Richards, AND keep Stralman.

And that is with re-signing pretty much everyone and allowing only (1) rookie to make the team. I get the feeling that we may see more like 2-3 with the way Fast, Miller, Allen, McIlrath and Lindberg played this season. Outside chances to Kristo and Hrivik/Bourque. That's an easy way to save some money.

I still do not sign Boyle at 2.4 that's nuts for a 4th liner. They can fill that spot with a younger player. Yea he;s a good defensive player , yea they have a 4th line that's solid yadda yadda. Its still too much find a cheaper option.

Stepan
Brassard
Miller
Moore

LOL. Kill me.

Rough tides ahead for sure.

In a perfect world, it'd be nice to add some sandpaper to this current team in the offseason. Balance them out a bit.

But the contractual situations and the pending Richards buyout makes that pretty much impossible.

The reason the Brassard line is having so much success is because its getting favorable matchups -- dont think that'll be the case if we have to make Brassard the 2C.

Yep. I also believe it's because all (3) have made a conscious effort to go into the dirty areas to score goals. Especially Pouliot. The other lines are missing that willingness.

It's what happens when you have so much money tied up in the defense and on the wings.

And in goal, for that matter.

I like the look of your lineup out of consistency, and limited turnover. But I think Sather gets creative in the off-season after buying out Richie to fill that 2/3 C spot. I wish I could offer names, but I've got nothing.

I'd pay for a guy like ROR or Berglund (despite his limited skating, if we give him good wings he can be a force). I'd even prefer Ott on 3C over Miller, but I fear he'll be overpaid on the market. He was also not very appealing during his time in STL. A veteran guy though, and one who's been around the block.

All the moves that are bandied about here are just throwing darts in the dark. There's no organizational philosophy. Hasn't been since The Great Architect took over. This team has the same problems that the Tortorella teams had which had the same problems the Renney teams. So what (who?) has been the constant in that time?
