The cap was practically half of what it is today when Drury signed that deal. Drury was given super star money at the time. Callahan is not getting that.
Anything north of 6m is most definatly superstar money.

you're comparing apples and oranges here.
Drury made his mark on some stacked teams in Colorado and Buffalo.
Oh, I totally agree, but I'm just saying that if Callahan's contributions can't be overrated. He's done a lot for this team and if he didn't have absolutely ridiculous demands, I'd want him to stay for another 2-3 years.
Yeah, I don't know how anyone can say he's overrated. That's really devaluing him and his contributions. Maybe on the stat sheet, but if you look just at the stats, you really miss Ryan Callahan's real positives.
We all knew the Drury contract was going to be an albatross when he signed it, and he was a lot better at that point in his career than Callahan is right now. What's the definition of insanity again?

Being a Ranger fan at the trade deadline and on free agent day? What's the definition of insanity again?
This is beyond ridiculous. You act as if there has never been a good free agent signing in NHL history. There are multiple ways to spend $6 million more effectively than Ryan Callahan NEXT SEASON, never mind 5 years down the road. You realize giving Callahan 2 million more dollars doesn't cripple our ability to re-sign our youth right?
Not bringing Cally back opens up a ton of cap space that has to be used somewhere. And it ain't gonna be used to bring in some young player on a good contract, it will be used to overpay some late 20's player on a long term contract. That's how it works.

The only intangible I'd be willing to pay extra for is a player who's clutch. If you have a player who somehow finds a way to score goals when you need them or just plays really well in intense situations, you pay extra for that. What does Callahan do that doesn't go on the stat sheet?
Maybe, but Lombardi is usually stingy about giving up prospects.

Point is moot anyway. Just waiting for the tweet that says he resigns.Which is why I asked.
That's a recent 1st he'd be coughing up.
Try 8-10. UFA superstars don't ask for 6 million dollars unless they're offering a discount.

I agree, but why should we all of a sudden decide to abandon ship with 20 games left in the season?

Can someone give me a low down of what is going to happen in a single sentence?

I kind of wonder if in 3 years 6M is not "superstar" money with the cap rising ... just a thought.

We all would want Callahan to stay for a reasonable rate...I don't care if the cap is going up 2 million dollars....you don't pay a guy 6+ mil for shotblocking/penalty killing
it's just insane.. JT Miller (although obviously not as good as Callahan) will definitely provide similar production. Trade Callahan for a cheaper roster player or a pick and move on....that would be better for the team in the long run... Zucc on the second line, Miller on the 3rd plus Callahans returns in a trade is smarter than paying Callahan 6 million
