Tell me what you would do.
I would trade him right now for whatever they can get and use the money in free agency. Signing Callahan for 6x6 is almost a guarantee to be an albatross contract. He doesn't fit this system, he's declining, and he's injury prone. Getting a 1st round pick for him, plus 1-2 free agents is better for this team in the long run. Now, the free agent signing(s) could very well turn out to be bad deals, but at least they would be leaving themselves open to get a productive player plus the first round pick (or whatever they get in return for Cally).

Try 8-10. UFA superstars don't ask for 6 million dollars unless they're offering a discount.

It's not superstar money, but it is 1st/2nd line tweener money. Callahan has been that for a few years, but this season and last he's been more of a 2nd/3rd line tweener and he's expected to drop even further.

Even with the cap going up signing him at 6x6 is going to hurt the team. It won't cripple the organization as some have suggested, but the combined contracts of lundquist, nash, cally and girardi will definitely make it hard to sign all the players we need for the years to come.

No. Not practically half. Not even close. It was 50.3 million. Was Drury overpaid? Yep. Just because we made the mistake of giving Drury that contract it should not justify doing the same for Callahan. It is called learning from your mistakes.

Exactly this....

Stan, you use contracts such as Drury's/Clowe's/Clarksons as why Callahan should get 6 million.... These contracts are known across the league as awful, just because these mistakes have happened does not mean that the Rangers have to make the same mistakes....It just doesn't make sense

So I guess this deadline, Sather's move is going to be to sign his own free agent to a 6M per year deal over 6 years..

Hey, at least he's not trading for someone who contributes absolutely nothing as usual.

Luckily, shotblocking has very little to do with what makes Ryan Callahan a great player. Hitting and shotblocking is, unfortunately, the only way some fans have of gauging value outside of goals and assists, thus making it very difficult for most of them to have any sort of appreciation for the numerous other more valuable and more important elements of Callahan's game.

Such as looking good in blue and never getting frustrated with his teammates. Also, always having gel in his hair and knowing where to find the best chicken parm.

Don't kill me Sting, I'm just making light of the situation since we're all tense.

This years FA class isn't exactly full of superstars. You have Vanek, Stastny, Jagr, and Iginla. That's the CREAM of the crop in 2014.

Why change? 1st and 2nd round exits are the best! :sarcasm:

Specifically, what free agents are you going to go after? Only x amount of players will become available. Who are you getting a good deal on?

Flyers are making a push here, anyone think this McDonald deal may lead to Sather doing something?

Could you imagine if Sather was commissioner, The trade deadline line would wind up in the 1st week of playoffs.

A. You don't need to sign big name free agents in order to make two smart signings that help the team

B. You can always make a stop gap signing for cheap, give a kid a spot on the team and spend the money in next year's free agency instead

Available cap space is not as blasphemous as Rangers fans have come to feel.

No you don't ... but what FA will be available that is our MISSING link to getting over the hump or pushing us toward the top to compete w/ Boston, Chicago, Pit, etc.
