yeah, why would we move Stepan for Stastny who if we wanted can just sign?

Alot of variables involved in the answer, shortest...

Let's say we acquired MSL and keep Richards.. Not much room for Stepan down the middle.. So might as well move him. I'm of the opinion Miller has a higher ceiling so, my centers would probably be Stastny / Richards / Miller for the top three. Stepan isn't cut out to be a 4th line guy, so I'd move him... Probably be able to get Stastny to sign a more reasonable contract at this point as compared to July... Just a hypothetical, in the event Richards doesn't get bought out..

How could we fit both Jordan and Eric's salaries? Carolina may need to retain $1 million on one or both contracts for us to negotiate

Trading Stepan for Stastny lol. Horrible idea.

As for the salaries, Jordan and Eric have a combined hit of 14.25

Assuming in the offseason, we gut Cally and Richards and one of send Brassard in the package, that's 14.075 (in this years cap hit, not Cally's 6 mil).

So we have one spot to fill, but have essentially replaced Brass and Richards with the two Staals.

Miller slots in for Cally. We have to find about 1.5 in cap space (which we have sitting). Move Dorsett or something. No big deal.

This could easily be done, thing is, the package they would want would be massive. I'd assume we start with Stepan and another good roster player.

Stepan
Brassard
Callahan
Dorsett
Allen
Kristo
1st & 3rd

Probably need to add more.

Dorsett comes off the books, we retain Carcillo.

Staals slot in for Steps and Brass. Miller stays in for Cally, once Zucc is back.

Kreider-E. Staal - Nash
Hags - J. Staal - Zucc
Pouliot - Miller - TBD (FA or Rookie)
Carcill0 - Moore - Boyle

Really just leaves a top 6 LW as a need, assuming Miller develops past this year. I'm willing to go with his growing pains. Let Richie center the third line until the end of the year, slot Miller in on his RW.

#1 - Callahan @ $6M for 6 years?
I hope all the people bemoaning the Rangers being "stuck" with a hefty Callahan contract took note that Luongo and his contract was just traded today. Further showing that teams don't get stuck with contracts once thought to have too many years and too many dollars. Oh, I'm sure someone will come up with a contract but two of the worst contracts in the last 10 years (Luongo and Campbell) have both been traded by the teams that signed them to those contracts.

#2 - Stastny...exactly a #2
I really like Stastny coming out of college but he's shown he's not a #1 and there's no way I trade Stepan for him. If you want to sign him, do so knowing he's a #2 center.

#3 - E. Staal or Spezza
I would gladly trade for either. The rangers aren't going to find a #1 center any other way.

carolina is rumored to want to cut salary. eric staal is owed 18.75m over the next 2 seasons.

That would be the only reason you could get him. You could offer the Canes a package of picks, prospects, and maybe an expiring contract like Cally and Stralman if you had to make salary match for this year.

Carolina is cheap (bc they legitimately do not have the cash flow the Rangers have).

For small market teams like that sometimes saving money actually is a smart hockey move. I'd be happy to help them out with that problem because we have money in spades.

Eh.... but it's only for 2 more years after this one.

If Sather is gonna give 7 years at 7 million to Stastny, I'll take Staal for the next 2 at 9 million, with the likelihood that you can resign him after that for probably 6.

Fair point. I'm just not a fan of a possible Statsny signing really.

Stastny at 7.5 is Pejorative Slured. He is such a mediocre 1B. He'd be a great 2C on a cup winning team, but the AVS have so much depth down the middle with their young roster they don't need him.

Would be stupid for the Rangers though.

You could include M. Staal and his $3.975M and maybe get back an offensive Dman from the Canes. :naughty:

I think some fans need to see a trade. You and I both know that if it's 1:00 tomorrow and the Rangers haven't done anything people will be climbing the virtual walls of this board.

We both know the same posters who have been preaching the Rangers should rebuild for the past million trade threads will be crying that the team isn't doing anything to improve for the playoff run.

Or better yet, if Sather doesn't make the exact move they want made they will be crying.

While you're at it… could you pick up a #1 franchise center, and a top pairing OFD?

You want players that have ridiculously high value, but are you prepared to give up the assets?

Don't forget that the franchise center you speak of must also have a very reasonable cap hit.

If you sign him in the offseason you would have him, Stepan, Richards, and JT Miller as your centers ... assuming Richards is bought out ... not a bad core.

Why would you go through so much trouble and make so many bad decisions just to not buy out Richards?

Just buy out Richards.

i think marc staal is worth alot possible top 2 dmen has a great contract rn i really think we could get alot for him, hate to see him go but his worth could really help this team

“@DonCherryParody: YKNOW WHATS GONNA HAPPEN WITH MIKE CALAMARI OUT THERE IN CALGARY FLAMES, GOOD TRONNA BOY AND EVERYTHINK LIKE THAT! LET'S GO! #Tradecentre”

Slightly off topic, but if you have Twitter and want to follow an amazing parody account, follow @DonCherryParody

Haha...

Semin would be a good acquisition IMO. One of the best defensive wingers in the league and puck possession machine. If you can get the Canes to retain some salary, while sending a signed Callahan in return, you go for it.

So… Stepan goes from our #1 to our #4 center overnight? … I'm still curious as to when Stastny became significantly better than Stepan. Why would Stastny sign a 'more reasonable' contract now - ya know, rather than just wait 4 months.
