I wonder what having a good GM feels like...
I think a drunk Stan Bowman is still a better GM than Sather.

I doubt that.
I've already addressed this. Everybody loves to sit back and say, "don't pay him" and then when you ask that person who they'd pay, they quickly shut up and dodge the question.
I wouldn't mind stepan+Kristo+Boyle+2nd for kesler. Kesler comes to play where as stepan doesn't always show up and doesn't respond to physical play IMO.
I doubt Steve Yzerman is influenced by Phil Esposito. Or Tony, for that matter. It's possible that TB saw all the backlash that was all over the place after Boomer announced the deal, and changed their minds.
You could keep him as a rental if you really think this team is competing for the cup, but if you can get a decent return back for him, I think you're better off trading him and building for the next couple of years.
Letting him walk for nothing is not a good thing.

Oh, I don't know, save the money for the kids in the future? Got plenty of RFA years that will be running out on core players soon. You don't have to spend to the cap every year![]()
I like Kesler, but that's too much and really kills our center depth
I would absolutely mind that.

It does? Boyle isn't likely coming back and Kristo is a winger. Stepan for Kesler is the same number of centers as before. Honestly, I don't care about Boyle, Kristo or the 2nd but Stepan for Kesler is so lateral. Get better but older. Move for the short term.
I agree that it's too much, but don't think it kills our depth at C. We'd still have Kesler-Richards-Brassard-Moore-Miller.
