Ha, whether true or not, I love the thought of the chief scout residing in such a hockey hotbed.

Actually it's true! I can't post the article for some reason but his name was Barry Fraser and he resided in Cabo...

Communication a decade ago was not helped by the fact
that the chief scout and leader of that staff based himself out of a villa in
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Not exactly
known as a hot bed for hockey activity, the news that Barry Fraser was residing
south of the U.S. border grabbed everyone’s attention and caught most people
off guard.

“At first we were all surprised by it, but Barry convinced
Glen he could do it, and it was more of a weird situation than anything else,”
McCarthy recalled. “I think other teams and fans thought it was a bit
funny that a chief scout for an NHL team could live in Mexico, and still be
a chief scout. It was a bit different
for us at first, but the only difference was that he had no home games!
He went on the road for a long time, and then got to go back to paradise.”

id be interested in Kobasew depending on if Moore Dorsett or Boyle get traded.. Kobasew would add more skill to the 3rd and 4th line, can PK as well. energy winger with PK skills.

Pens fans are practically in tears because they finally got rid of him.

This might be my imagination but didn't the guy that ran the draft for the Oilers under Sather live AND work from Mexico City?

Somebody on this board mentioned that about 10 years ago, and posted an article about it. I'm probably wrong but the article was from The Hockey News..

Are you suggesting Sather taking the same approach, chilling in his weekend home wherever that now is while Clake & co doing the work? Well it wouldn't surprise me.

The Rangers are the biggest bunch of sissies on the Eastern conf. They lose to bigger teams because they are out hit and out muscled. I can care less if you like my opinion I have forgotten more about this game then you will ever know. I talk to players and coaches daily ask them about how or what the team is missing most say size and snarl

Size and snarl isn't the same thing as a goon who averages less than 4 minutes per game and spends most of his time in the press box.

I LOL'ed:

"Smith finally got his man. Sather got Todd Marchant, a speedy center who wound up playing more than 1,100 NHL games, although he wasn't the player Sather thought he was getting.

"This is a funny story: I'd been bugging Glen all year, and at the deadline he finally said, 'Give me [Eric] Cairns,'" Smith said. "I said I couldn't do that because at the time we thought he was going to be a pretty good player, a big defenseman, which he ended up being with the Islanders. I said I'll give you Todd Marchant; he played for the U.S. National Team. He's got speed, he's got this, he's got that. So he calls me back and says he'll do it for Marchant.

"So we trade Marchant, we get MacTavish, and we go forward. I get a call from Sather, and he says to me, 'Smitty, you [bleeped] me on this deal. This guy's supposed to be 6-foot-1. He's 5-foot-8. I said, 'What are you talking about? I never said that? Where did you see that?' He said, 'Right in the [media] guide. I said, 'You're looking at the wrong Marchant. That's his brother.' He had a brother who'd been playing and [Sather] was reading all this stuff about the brother. As it turned out, Todd Marchant was a great pickup, but it was hilarious because he thought he was getting a 6-foot-1 guy and he got a 5-foot-8 guy.""

Random question: who was the one that pushed for McDonagh to be included in the deal and who was it that reported it? I remember that one guy said that it was someone's idea to include McDonagh, but it wasn't Sather's.

I couldn't find who in the Rangers FO wanted McDonagh included, but I did find this bit of hilarity...

McDonagh had three solid seasons as a stay-at-home defenceman at Wisconsin but, as the story goes, he had one not-so-impressive night and Gainey happened to be in attendance. Trevor Timmins, the man who directs the Canadiens' amateur scouting, pleaded for the team to keep Mc-Donagh but he was overruled.

It would explain why the deal was held up. The deal was announced at like 3:59....Then the league said it wasn't done in time....Then it was official....What a weird day to be a fan....

Marchant just played his first game as a Ranger. A friday night game against the Blackhawks. He looked like a little kid on the ice. Nemchinov AND Hudson were both suspended for stick swinging incidents. I think Nemchinov's was in Florida and Hudson's was against the Penguins. The type of stick swinging incidents that would be front page news today.

does having a guy that can fight hurt a team? DC and DD are midgets and can't win a fight if life depended on it. Having a guy who can throw is great boost for smaller players. Guess Hawks , Bruins , and 85% of the league are wrong by having them guys..

lol, he actually "forgot" to mention it until he got a random call about Callahan.

Poor guy makes a great point about how Callahan is not worth the contract of other top players which is of course lost on Mike cause he doesn't know who they are.

But the call reminded him of his info on the trade

Ah, it's been driving me mad. I think it was Renaud Lavoie, who reported that it wasn't Sather's idea to include McDonagh, but I couldn't find the tweet or report anywhere on Google.

It's absolutely hilarious that this Callahan situation is coming down to the wire. Something that should have been done months ago.

I have a strange feeling that Cally ends up on the Ducks and re-signs there. Many Ducks fans state that their front office is loathe to surrender prospects for UFAs, so with Selanne retiring and some cap room in 2014-15 could it happen? With the Rangers having prior conversations with the Ducks during the Girardi negotiation, would Vatanen and one of DSP/Etem/Palmieri/Silfverberg be a realistic return as long as they have a window to re-sign him? Would they even give him 6/7 years for 6.5 or 7?!? Hmmmmm. Doesn't make as much sense when I write that out now, but this IS the trade thread and there have been worse ideas posted here...

Vatanen along with Girardi and Klein would make Stralman expendable for another asset if they're not going to re-sign him. Food for thought.

Yes it would hurt the team since the fourth line has been very good most nights. Just stop.
