What sort of situation does that put the Rangers in for next year if he signs that deal...

Hard to believe they are offering that much, but it is interesting that Cally has reduced his cost.

I don't know what to say. 6M had me at a loss for words. If we go north of that I'm going to have a hard time not trading in my Rangers jersey and calling it quits. Maybe I'll pray for the Islanders to get better or just pick a team to root for in a game by game basis. I simply can't stomach this move. It will force me to eventually hate a player I used to love and it shows beyond any doubt that this team has learned nothing.

I agree totally.
Plenty of directions Rangers can go here, but the one direction they CANNOT go is a 6X $6 type of deal.
The repeated turnovers at the blueline and inability to cath a pass are starting to wear on me already. In three years he could be a disaster.

Who said he sucks? I said it's been 4 years and he's still not ready. When do we begin to say it was a mistake?

I usually don't start looking at players as potential busts until the middle of what would have been his 2nd year as a pro if he went the college route and played all 4 years. That's the middle of 15-16.

Callahan has been here for 7 years. You know whats wearing on me? The constant game to game and shift to shift analysis. We know what he is. We can project what he might be, but give it a rest with this "inability to catch a pass" BS.

When was the last time Callahan got in on the forecheck with a big hit & turnover?

He used to be good for 2-3 of those a game. Set the tone right off the drop of the puck. That has been MIA all season.* It's not just the goals and points.

It's absolutely nuts to give him $6-6.5M long term.

To be fair it's the entire line. That line should be a good forechecking line, that should be their role with the other 2 offensive units. Richards I won't touch on for obvious reasons, he is the wrong fit there. But Hagelin hasn't landed a hit all season.

Anything north of 6 million is insane, but sadly is a very New York Rangers type move. The only winner if he is signed for over 6 million would be Steve Bartlet, as his client rosters will absolutely increase.

No lower the line. 6 mil is too much, what are we going to do with the following players, when they are up both this and next year.

Hagelin
Stepan
Kreider
Zucc
Staal
Brassard
Stralman
Moore
Talbot
Miller

All these guys are due raises. How are we going to improve our team with that albatross.

This will end up being the same team for all 6 years of that contract.

Test FA cally, please. Or do what Brown did.

“@Real_ESPNLeBrun: As I mentioned in my blog just posted, Callahan's last offer was south of $6.5 million x 6 yrs.... but still obviously too high for NYR...”

Make sure you give Callahan a full NMC for all six years, Sather, you piece of ****.

This, this, this. It's not just the points. We can't pay 6x6 for what he brings to the table this year and presuming he will bounce back at all is a lot more dangerous than assuming he continues to diminish. At his current play he isn't close to worth 6x6. If he declines at all it becomes a travesty.

holy crap Cally. 6 million is already ridiculous. If he doesn't take it I will drive him to the airport. I freaking love the guy but this is insane.

The fact the rangers even offered 6 years 6 mill disgusts me. Cally isn't worth a penny over $5 mill. in reality. Unreal. 20 goal scorer 6 mill. a year?!?!?!

Trade him. Trade him. Trade him.

Cally is underrated by some here and overrated by some. The reality is that he is an excellent 3rd liner and a good 2nd liner. Once his body inevitably breaks down he will be useless on the ice. He disappears in the playoffs as well. Trade him.

Just to note, at a 6 million cap hit, Callahan would be in the top 30 contracts for forwards, in line with others such as

Daniel & Henrik Sedin
Patrick Kane
Henrik Zetterberg
Taylor Hall
Jonathan Toews

And more then

Patrick Sharp
Martin St. Louis
Daniel Alfredsson

I could go on, but it will make me depressed.
