PLD would be a nice addition, but only in 2 years.

Not interested in giving up assets. If he really wants to be a Hab, he will sign here.
I agree. Keep your assets and keep rebuilding and adding for the next 2 years and if PLD does end up going to UFA in 2 years and wants to then sign with the Habs you sign him then.

By then hopefully the Habs will be ready to compete from their rebuild and with the cap possibly being much higher in a couple of years the time frame would be perfect to add a UFA like PLD after what is a hopefully successful rebuild.

I tend to agree, but would consider it if the assets given up were assets we wanted to moe anyways. However, that is unlikely to be what the other side wants.

Definitely would hate to be proactive and add a young PWF to our core. It always works for Montreal to sit around and wait for players to come to us, nothing will change in the next two years.

Indeed. Asset-management-wise, the optimal window to acquire Dubois would be as a UFA signing in the 2024 summer; he will be in his prime, his skillset would complement well the existing young F core and he would not hinder the chances of the Habs getting another high 1st round pick in 2023. Salary-wise, with a few ELC players likely to join the lineup and Drouin/Hoffman/Byron off the books by then, the window is there as well.

But if the Jets absolutely want some compensation and not lose him for nothing, maybe some kind of deal could be mutually interesting at the 2024 TDL, depending where both teams are in the standings and in their respective resets?

With two big caveats (if the reports he specifically wants to go to Montreal are true, and if Winnipeg might feel forced to accept a lower price akin to the Trouba/Fox trades to NYR) I think there's good rationale in trading for him right now instead of waiting for UFA.

His career high is 61P, if you get him now and particularly after he's forced a trade for the 2nd time in a short career, Montreal has the leverage to say Suzuki's deal is the ceiling for a Dubois contract and get him well below the 9-9.5M he might fetch as a UFA in 2 years. The age/timelines work nicely too to sign him from age 24-31 instead of 26-33, and we have glaring holes at both LW and 2C that he can fill and switch between as needed (while also helping ensure that whoever we draft has some insulation in the lineup as well).

With that being said it's just impossible to really say definitively as forum posters. There's just too many variables here that we have no way of knowing as outsiders, and those variables essentially make the decision for you.

Hopefully things get going once the SC Final is over.

This summer is HuGo's big test for the rebuild. Can't wait to see what they'll do.

I disagree, I think we should mortgage assets of the future to forcefeed a roster that might compete for the 8th playoffs spot as soon as next year. As we all know, anything can happen in the playoffs.

Suzuki is already overpaid for his production level — PLD at 8m+ would be ludicrous.

Neither have hit even 70 points!
You know how long term deals work right? You’re taking a chance on the player so you don’t have to pay them 10+ million in 2 years.

He hasn’t made $7.875 million per season yet, that deal doesn’t kick in till next season. I think he puts up at least 70 next season. Under MSL he played 37 games had 12 goals and 34 points. His production was impacted by the Habs terrible run under Ducharme (27 points in 45 games) just like Caufield’s was.

Dubois is exactly what the Suzuki-Caufield line needs.
We should def try to get him in a trade or as a free agent.
I would sign him to the same contract as Suzuki

I have zero worries about Suzuki.............we somewhat had to get him under contract before the Canes made MB look like an idiot again..........I think, and hope Suzuki will be underpaid once CC gets going and scores 40 goals....
As for PLD, not a fan, haven't seen anything to change that....red flags all over the place, that said rarely does a young player, want to come to Montreal...............could he turn it on once that happens?
I can't imagine the Jets want to keep him, if he is forcing a trade to the Habs....
Has there been rumours about PLD wanting a trade to Montreal? Or wishful thinking by the media in Montreal.

Why trade for a player entering his prime now? We are three years away, more likely five.

I really, really don't like all this Dubois talk. I wouldn't even get him for free, nevermind trading for him. I'll take him in 5 years if he's still relevant. Now he's just gonna push us to that 15th-in-the-league no man's land with no franchise player to show for it despite getting a 1st overall because we were unlucky to get one in one of the worst draft years at the top in recent memory.

If HuGo does this then I know they're not serious about rebuilding and are trying to compete next year, which is an atrocious strategy the likes of which we have tried for 30 years with the results we all know.

On top of all that, Dubois is a very boring player, same is true of Suzuki, and of Wright. Can we get some exciting players with real offense please? Jesus f***ing Christ. Yeah, yeah, I want to win too, but I want some buzz and looking forward to watch games. Caufield alone won't give us that.

We need Connor Bedard.

Somewhere on earth in a hospital
imagine calling out Suzuki contract when he played with dogshit wingers all year in the worst team of the league. Caufield played like a good 30 games and that's it.

Give Suzuki with Pastnark and Marchand bet he ends up 70+.

Imagine being stuck playing with Armia Gallagher Anderson Hoffman and now Dadonov.

Still managed 60 +. Give him an actual trio and he easily top 70 points.
Imagine Kevin Hayes is paid the same amount and he struggle to get 40 lmao.
Hischier is in the same case as Suzuki with no wingers. Both are great deals at their age.

Better than paying 7m for Dubois or 9m+ for Forsberg lmfao

SUZUKI's contract is fine. He's already proven himself as a center you can rely on as you go deep in the playoff. He's perfect for what he's supposed to be, a two-way can-face-anybody 60-70 pts playoff center. He's a Jacques Lemaire type, not Guy Lafleur.

BUT, we have him, do we need more players like him? Even with Wright it's pushing it, nevermind Dubois.

Get some different players.

The issue I have with waiting 2 years for PLD is this #1 overall pick should not be a center then but a winger or defenseman to help round out the group.

You either trade for PLD around Calgary’s pick + and draft Slaf, or draft Wright and forget about PLD.

Suzuki, PLD and Wright as top 3 centers would leave us weak in other areas.

I think the decision needs to be made now.

Unless there is appetite to be able to shift Suzuki to the wing but then let’s go for Bedard next year 🤣

Dubois is the same caliber of player as Suzuki. You wouldn't take a 2nd Suzuki for free?

No, I wouldn't. Not this year.

I want a high draft pick in 2023. This is crucial to avoid the same fate we've had since the f***ing mid-1990s.

I'm in my late-30s, I've HAD IT with the bullshit that "You can't lose in Montreal". f*** whoever says that shit. We've been losing for 29 years so clearly, it's not true.

Enough with this shit.
