One of the reasons Hughes decided to take the Mtl GM gig was both he & his wife’s parents are getting up there and this was an opportunity to spend time & keep an eye on them… Hughes even mentioned it at his intro PC as a significant reason for choosing this job vs previous opportunities presented to him

Not saying this is the case as I’ve got no idea - but could play a factor w Bergeron / family dynamics (wife, grandkids etc).

David Savard said his wife wouldn’t even allow him to consider other options when the Habs opportunity presented itself - she absolute wanted to be in close proximity to her parents and wanted grandkids to be close to the grandparents
I do think that could be the case for Letang, but I'm not sure Bergeron want to leave in QC after his career

I'll be honest, I don't want either Letang or Bergeron with the Habs next year. Next year should be an all out embrace of young players getting their shots, trading as many vets as possible and complete suckage, in order to draft one of Bedard, Michkov or Fantilli. We all know we don't have the players to compete - lets set ourselves up for an entire decade of success, with an incredible foundation of talent.

That's a good recipe to fail, not surround you're young players with good vet
You're serious?

We just finished dead last with "good veterans." We have done nothing, give or take an improbable couple of playoff runs, for 30 years. I don't mind losing one more, just to add another significant top piece and make us contenders for a very very long time after.

Just read more into Minnesota's dead cap situation. Could they try and acquire Weber's LTIR contract to offset the impacts of it?

This was discussed previously and the conclusion was that it wasn’t really worth it for MIN (and AZ is still interested by Webber).

What was “trending” recently was trading one of their RFA (ex: Fiala) for young talent, either draft pick or player on an ELC. NJD and Ottawa are teams that seem to want players now.

There is zero chance Bergeron would ever want to come to Montreal
A) he didn’t grow up a habs fan
B) why the f*** would you want to finish your career on a rebuilding team

I would have loved to have Bergeron as a Habs but like you said, wasn’t meant to be and won’t happen.

Just as a matter of respect for your fanbase, you don’t go finish your career with your team’s historic rival.

Fiala would be a great fit on the LW with Wright. Scoring winger with experience and grit.

Was going to say the same. Also, why would Bergeron play out his career for a team who’s just started rebuilding, no Carey Price (?), and a million question marks? I’d be stunned if he didn’t resign with tue Bruins, I’d be a million times more stunned if he signed with the Habs, a team he despised growing up.
Already won a cup.

Gets to come and play in his home province and start the process on his next career within Habs org upon retirement.

I’m not saying go get many players to compete, but you need some good vet to surround your young players and to not be oblige to rush them.

If Bergeron didn’t like the Habs because of the Nordiques, I can only imagine 18 years with the Boston Bruins and 5 playoffs series with the Habs winning 3 of them probably didn’t make him like us anymore. Lol
i agree with you about the Bruins, but my answer was about the Nordics not about the Bruins

IF.. ONLY IF they could flip Dvorak for a good pick at the draft and sign Bergy to a low 1-2 year contract to mentor the youngins with the option to trade him to a contender at the deadline, I wouldn’t mind.

IF Petry is traded and we get rid of the Weber contract and Carey retires... I'm ok with getting Letang. Won't prevent us from getting Michkov next year and helps groom the defense moving forward, plus give us a decent PP to watch for the kids up front too.

Then when we're ready to compete you trade him at a TDL for a 1st down the line....seems like decent asset management.

Any chance we could convince Bergeron / Letang to join us on a 1 year contract where they have full say where they go at the trade deadline? Let's them be close to home for 6 months, experience playing for the Habs, and a chance to pursue a cup wherever they choose. We get mentors for our young guys and the potential to trade them for assets at the deadline. If they're on one year deals we could retain 50% making them really attractive for any team looking to make a deep playoff run.

You don't develop players by sheltering them but by giving them confidence and accepting some mistakes that comes from the learning process.
Right, but you also don't develop players by putting in them spots which they are definitely not ready for. There's a place somewhere in the middle which is the ideal way.
