Blair Betts.Yeah, you can trade for players on IR. Medical information just has to be cleared. You can't say a player is healthy then he arrives to his new team injured. Buffalo traded for Patrick Kane from Winnipeg when Kane was on LTIR. He was out the rest of that season.
There was an instance where Philadelphia waived a player and Montreal claimed him only to find he was injured (knee). You can't waive an injured player, so Montreal complained to the league, as did the player. NHL reversed the process, so he went back to Philadelphia.
Carrier has been cleared to play.
