We ain't buyers, that is for sure.
Define buying?

If Habs are within 6pts of wildcard at deadline none of the pending UFAs will likely be dealt - which in essence would be “think of them as deadline acquisitions”

Also wouldn’t be shocked if HuGo would look into acquiring a veteran backup + 13F IF the price tag is mid round pick

Within striking distance of the last wildcard spot I bloody hope the Habs don’t foolishly “buy”.

That’s a team that is below 50th percentile and utterly hopeless to win a round. You don’t buy to squeeze into the last playoff seed — the point isn’t to make the playoffs, but to build a team that is good enough to make the playoffs on its own. If our team is not good enough to be a playoff team then it doesn’t need any extra purchases this season.

Using picks and prospects to get pending UFAs.

Sellers: trading pending UFAs for picks and/or prospects.

To Vancouver
Rasmus Andersson
Kirby Dach

To Calgary
Calgary 1st 2025
Montreal 1st 2025
Jayden Struble

To Montreal
Elias Petersson, with Calgary and Vancouver each retaining 1,000,000
Vancouver's 7th dman

Retention increases if the Habs upgrade Struble to Mailloux or Engstrom.

Mailloux is definitely not untouchable. In fact he would probably be one of the first prospect i would trade providing the returning player would not be older than 26,
I would hate to give up Logan until he proves he cannot play in our system. A big RD that can provide offense, with albeit marginal defense at this point in time, is still a solid commodity to have in the system.

As always, it depends what’s coming back. Any player is tradable but I certainly wouldn’t give him away at this point.

I like Evans but signing him for more than 2 years would block Beck, Kapanen, Hage, or even a center drafted in the first round this year. Unless they are able to trade either Gally or Anderson.

Despite what we Habs fans might feel about the captain, over their careers to this point EP40 has been a better player than Suzuki. The question for the Habs is therefore: IF he's healthy and his intangibles are not problematic, how badly do the Habs want to have a Suzuki-Pettersson 1-2 punch? It won't be the toughest top6, it won't be the quickest top6, but one could say it would be very intelligent and reliable by virtue of just those two alone.

So let's say the Habs really want him (and think he will recover from whatever has been ailing him) and let's say the Canucks want to build a tough playoff-style team in the spirit of Rick Tocchet and JT Miller and therefore want to get out from under that commitment to EP40.

EP40's cap hit really sucks but they won't want to retain on it given the OEL fisaco, so let's forget that. What can we give to VAN to get EP40 that won't derail our own team rebuild?

How about something like Evans + Xhekaj + Mailloux + Dach

Evans is worth a 1st round pick and is in high-demand by playoff teams this year
Xhekaj is a tough defender who'd be loved by any playoff team
Mailloux is a floundering though high-upside prospect with a big frame
Dach is a hedge for Van for a top6 NHL C with a short contract commitment for evaluation purposes

It's a lot of NHL roster talent going out the door. Is it not enough? Is it laughable? I think the caphit puts a big damper on his trade price. See how CBJ paid us to take Laine... We're not privy to their conversations and interests but I'm thinking in terms of what the Habs can afford to lose without derailing the rebuild.
Evans,a first( Calgary pick), Mailloux and Dach for

If the Habs keep this level of play up, I see them being pretty quiet at the deadline:

I don't see them buying (in terms of trading high picks for UFAs or similar) just to sneak into the playoffs against a higher seed.

I don't see them selling if there is a chance this group can make it into the WC because it would send the wrong message to a team rallying/desperate for some winning.

Maybe a minor tweak here and there but other than that I'd say it's status quo (as long as the team remains healthy).

Hockey trade with a western conference team. Help both for the final push.

if they are in the mix they will likely sell and buy. Move guys like Dvorak (if possible) and acquire a better player. Unless they bring up Beck and/or add Demidov and they just sell the Dvoraks.

Is there any other bad contract that could be worth gambling on for Slaf before the remaining shine of a first overall wears off?
