harris hasn't done a single thing to make himself worth a kid who has already scored 15 goals in <70 games and who has held a ppg pace in the AHL. Being 'small' is more a slight on harris than it is on berggren too, btw. Harris isn't exactly 'established' either and he's been playing on one of the worst teams in the league with all the opportunity in the world to show what he's got.
Yeah, of all our players I see the least asset value in Harris. It doesn’t help that he’s out injured now but to me he’s a beefier Mete. Doesn’t seem like he has any differentiating qualities.

He’s still young but youth is the most fickle property.

The way I see it, Harris might only be a third pairing dman, but he can be a third pairing dman on a good team.

Avg. NHL fwd height is btw 6-6'1 & weight 195-200.

At 5'11, 197lbs, I don't think calling Berggren "small" is accurate at all.

And I don't think Harris having 18 more NHL games makes him "more established".

But those labels aside, if we look at the the two actual players and our roster/org. needs, I disagree with your take. Berggren fits our needs better and the difference in value of the two players is negligible at best imo.
I would make offer on Berggren. He has stats in Euro leagues and AHL. He should be good player. Mid liner anyway with upside. But I never seen him play neither so.....

I mean... I guess? A guy worth giving a shot to but I'm not confident about his long-term fit with the team.

From what I've seen, he's a very smart player. Quick, pretty versatile offensively, protects the puck well for a guy his size, consistently makes the right play, and is solid defensively. Similar to what we have in Newhook. Just another smaller middle-six guy but maybe a good fit for Marty's system.
Maybe a great fit on a third line with Newhook and Beck?

Newhook - Beck - Berggren?

Hell on wheels as a two-way 3rd line. Quick, quick, quick.

What's the big hype on this guy
5 foot 10
Another small guy
Five-Foot-Eleven, close to 200lbs.

SCOUTING REPORT

Plays with tremendous energy every shift. Has a nice blend of speed, skill and versatility (can play either center or wing), so he can be used in all game situations. Is relentless in his pursuit of the puck. Is also a fine playmaker. Does not have ideal size for the National Hockey League game, so he will need to add significant bulk and strength in order to thrive while playing his energetic style at the highest level. Could stand to shoot the puck more.

Long Range Potential: Energetic, skilled and versatile forward with upside.

I love Berggren and have been hyping him up since 2018 but he's pretty much a lot of what we already have. There's no need for him. They need to go for size and speed.

Amen.

I agree that for forward that may play on the 3rd and 4th line priority should be size and speed. But for the top 2 lines, priority is skill, IQ and drive.

Watching the game last night, it re-enforce the fact that this team is very early in its rebuild. Beside the Suzuki, Caufleid and Slaf line, I had no pleasure in watching the other forward play. there where some good flash from the Monahan's line, but it's not like I'm sitting at the edge of my seat when Evans start the rush or Anderson get open. While not all the other players are deadweight, the evaluation period should be over now. KH should know that even with an healthy Dach and Newhook, the C line can't have both Evans and Dvroak. The priority should be to find a top 2C. This is the second season Dach get injured, and while this is 100% bad luck, his absence demonstrate the lack of depth at this position. We have nobody that can C the 2nd line. While Monahan is going the best he can, he's more suited for 3rd C (and he may get traded soon!)

You can always find 3rd and 4th line guys and there is no need to overpay them otherwise it takes away from your ability to pay top dollar for your best players.

Absolutely boggles my mind, as t why we are not there............................tons of money and it should be a done deal, and yet?
We should be pouching guys left and right from teams who have these people, so it begs the question as to why it's not happening??

We need to question Buddy Hire and whoever is keeping him there.

There's really no rush to have the finished portrait for the lineup. Eventual fixtures of the team are still developing, both in the NHL and in lower leagues.

The team won't be contending for another four years, including this one, IMO.

I'd be fine with trying to get a full season out of Newhook and Dach next year, to see how the team fares without Monahan and with, possibly, the addition of Beck, Roy, and even Heineman to the lineup?

Significant changes will happen at next year's draft deadline if they haven't happened at this year's deadline, with contracts to Savard, Kovacevic, Armia, Dvorak, Evans, Pezzetta and Allen all coming to the end of their terms.

The 2025 trade deadline and offseason will be perfect storms for Hughes to acquire a proven (not a project), youngish impact forward on an expiring deal. Some developed prospects and expiring veteran contracts to move, a stock pile of quality 2025 draft picks, plus plenty of Cap space happening...

Two more years after that of testing for chemistry, to see if Dach can keep away from the infirmary and to let our prospects continue to mature at the NHL level, both up front and on D.

By the 2027 offseason, we should have a decent long term NHL read on individual players and chemistry amongst them from Suzuki, Acquired top-6 forward in 2025, Salfkovsky, Dach, Caufield, Newhook, Beck, Roy, Heineman, Struble, Mailloux, Hutson, Reinbacher and Engstrom.

Hughes will have a bead on exactly what the UFA market can provide in order to complete his rebuild and the roster he will take to war.

no, we need Skill and hockey IQ.

Dont need more Anderson
Newhook - Beck - Berggren would bring speed, skill and hockey IQ at a little under average NHL size, but the overall matching speed of that line would kill opponents, Berggren might be more of playmaker than a scorer but, as demonstrated by Beck -- who is shooting more this year -- he would have two targets in Newhook and his pivot on such a third line.

If we aren't doing anything in the standings in two more years, let alone 2027, current management won't be here.
