And what will you be giving up to acquire Zegras exactly?
I would prefer to aim for Anton Lundell from Panthers.
- We do not have trading assets which can attract Anaheim as they are rebuilding (at least one step ahead of us)
- But we do have some for Panthers (rental vets, solid bottom 6 players, prospects, picks)
- FLO will be under big salary cap pressure in summer to sign their key players if they want to stay as contender
- Lundell is C/LW with strong faceoffs, great player, now playing 3C, still 22, RFA in the summer, definitely top 6 talent, already has Stanley cup finals experience

We have some exposure in terms of trying to maximize his return while he’s between injuries, but given how affordable his contract is and the premium position he plays, should be attracting attention now.
last year he got hurt and habs resigned him

need to use this for young scoring assets

Why not Zegras?

There can be many reasons, but offensive talent isn't one.

If Zegras refuses to even consider his defensive assignments, he's not McDavid level good offensively that it wouldn't matter.

Zegras is basically PLD good offensively, minus the defensive upside.

MSL is only as good with players as their willingness to listen and apply his teachings.
That's the thing, it's far more likely that he will always be soft and poor defensively, but if he manages to be at least Caufield level good in those aspects then it's fine. That's why it would be a buy low option. Playing with his best friend Caufield and a coach who he was raving about might be what it takes for him to become well rounded.

I don’t know if we can get that using Monahan alone but maybe a package can be put together.

I will say, I'd be extremely disappointed in Hughes if he doesn't get us another 1st. Kovacevic is a premium asset because of his contract and there is no point in keeping him when he will get a big raise next year and we have too many dmen as is back there. Tanner Jeannot got 5 picks including a 1st, and Goodrow+3rd got a 1st. Even if the most someone offers is a 2nd, you have to package him and Monahan to get that 1st even if we gotta take back some cap dumps.

Something like Monahan+Kovacevic for top 10 protected Oilers 1st+Foegele+Ceci could be feasible when Holland's ass is probably on the line and if the Oilers are close to a wildcard spot.

Remember Jonathan Drouin?

Just sayin'...
Zegras has shown much more than Drouin did at the time of trade.

Besides, we cannot operate on the notion that skill-first players will be radioactive bad simply because Bergevin got dog-walked by Yzerman on that trade. If Drouin was acquired for relatively cheaper it would’ve been a great attempt to acquire genuine talent. Nobody could’ve predicted Drouin turned out to be a bust and to what degree.

Seriously not counting on the Oilers to cough up a 1st. Holland is a sitting duck and just look at the mental gymnastics he put everyone through about his putrid goalie situation only to affirm his trust in Campbell.

The Jeannot trade was an outlier and particular to how BriseBois chose to throw everything at the wall for one more shot at a possible extended playoff run. I doubt that type of haul can be had again.

Probably not, but Holland may be desperate at this point. I can't see Draisaitl wanting to stay if they miss the playoffs and that means that McDavid likely won't stay.

Well the Goodrow trade was similar as well. League minimum for 2 playoff runs for a massive #5 dman is pretty valuable and should be worth more than a guy like Kulak who we got a 2nd for.

it will be so very interesting to see what the deadline deals look like this year.

Value-wise, that seems like a very low return for us... Taking on Ceci and Fogele amounts to cap dumps, and the Oilers pick is still likely to wind up late teens at best. Monahan alone should be worth that based on previous years, and Kovacevic could be worth as high as a 2nd from a contending team.

If that's the offer on the table from the Oilers & its the "best" one out there, frankly i'd probably pass, just keep Kovacevic and let Monahan pick where he wants to play and take whatever offer that team made.

Allen too expensive.

where's the salesman spirit...

Jeannot: The Tampa Bay Lightning are acquiring forward Tanner Jeannot from the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenceman Cal Foote and five draft picks, the team announced. The picks include: a first-round pick in 2025 (Top 10 protected), a second-round selection in 2024, and third, fourth and fifth-round picks in 2023.

Goodrow: Tampa Bay’s 2020 first-round pick and Anthony Greco to the San Jose Sharks for forward Barclay Goodrow and a 2020 third-rounder.

Only similarity between the two trades is that a free-wheeling GM on desperation mode did both. However, the haul was bigger for Jeannot since a 3rd did came back. Greco like Foote are immaterial.

Again, unlikely for these to re-occur as BriseBois went off the deep end. Clearly an outlier.

As for the Oil, how much more of their stinginess do you need to see before accepting that they are not a viable trading option? Yes, we’re all too familiar with the refrain that has their 2 big guns wasting their prime years but this is not a scenario that is new to this season.

Regarding your Kovacevic comment in the prior post, he’s a 3rd pairing D, regardless of what he’s making and prone to a lot of lapses. He’s maybe worth a 3rd-4th rounder, his value is in the spot he frees up for our glut of Ds.

I would. I love WiFi but he’s nothing more than a 6-7D on a contender.
I dunno...

Don't disagree with the assessment on his impact on a contending roster, but trading a player like that to a division & historic rival :dunno:

& Habs lack size up front and physicality all over, while our d prospect depth may eventually push him out all together, for now he fills a need at low cost & with great fit in the room.

Plus, as Brisebois showed in the Jeannot trade last year, just takes 1GM seeking to add a serviceable physical/pugilist to drive that price tag way up for a depth skater.

& Then there's X's waiver exempt status till 25-26 season...

Add it all up & at this point, I'd expect much more than a late 1st otherwise I can't see it as a worthwhile move
