To be fair not all our d will develop into top 4 and you can always trade one of them later. Broberg is a good prospect i would not be mad acquiring him. Dmen develop later often.
True but Habs have Matheson, Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj, Struble and Hutson and that’s just on LD.

If they could flip Harris + for Broberg, I’m all in but they’d be better off funding elite sniper up front than shoring up LD IMo.

Cool. I guess years of reading countless posts on trying to acquire every and any French player in existence has jaded me. I’m sure this is completely different and people want him because he’s a 29 yo, oft injured, mercurial, diamond in the rough who still has tons of potential and has nothing at all to do because he’s French. My bad.

Admittedly, I haven't read every post about Mantha in this thread, but I haven't come across any touting Mantha as a target because he's a "diamond in the rough", guess I missed those.

I have seen, and posted myself, lots of talk of Mantha being a good target BC of his, the caps, and our situation.

The "countless posts" of nonsense are abundant... Be it about non-existent boogiemen or about the next Franco saviour. That much I think I agree with you on ;)

in my home
With Backstrom now on LTIR for the remainder of the season, i don't think the Caps are that desperate to get rid of Mantha's contract.
They have over 7M of cap space, so that ship has sailed. No logic in bringing him to MTL anymore.

All the Habs' opportunities to use their cap space to get assets are pretty much gone now.
Ottawa was saved by the Pinto suspension.
Vancouver was saved, in a way, with the Perry thing and the Taylor Hall's injury.
Toronto will probably be allowed to ship Klingberg to Robidas Island.

What's left?
GOOD because who the heck wants Mantha

They traded Jeff Petry for a bag of pucks to the Habs, so I'm not surprised...

But Broberg is a LD and the Habs have too many NHL ready ones already on that side.
I get the LD abundance argument. But for a management team that seems to have no problem taking flyers on who we know are mid players (Gurianov, Pearson, Dadonov, Kovacevic, Lindstrom), it would be rather silly to ignore a naturally talented 22 year old defenceman who just happens to be stuck with the worst organization in the NHL in developing defencemen. He seems like a worthwhile gamble, much more than those other guys. And he’s more talented than the young LD the Habs already have, minus Guhle.

gurianov/Dadonov were part of an attempt to salvage something of value in moving Weber's contract.

Kovacevic was a waiver pick-up to address a hole at RD last year (and has played his way into a more stable spot)

Lindstrom was a contract piece to offload Petry (and address RD depth issues)

not sure any of those examples make a case for taking a flyer on Broberg, even if it's fair to say the oilers development approach is a disaster.

at this point, i doubt that I'd take him over any one of Xhekaj, Harris or Strubble, and since he's also waiver fodder as of next year, there's no point making an offer unless one were certain he'd bypass all 3 to take the 3LD spot out of camp next season.

if it were part of a larger deal that saw us offload Allen or Armia in the process, maybe... otherwise it's hard to see it making much sense

I like Zegras, but I really question his defensive game/effort/compete. Maybe playing with his best friend Cole would keep him motivated compared to Anaheim where he's lost his spot to Mctavish and Carlsson. Could be interesting depending on the price.

Doucet saying that he has a source that told him the goalie situation should be resolved soon, and it doesn't involve waivers, but more a trade.

Well Allen isn't moveable unless we retain/take back salary and Primeau won't net more than a 5th in my opinion. I'd also like to see how he does against easier teams since he always gets the hardest teams.

Zegras is Drouin 2.0.

Time to hail. MrB1P who had him outside the top 25 on draft day.

I would absolutely take a chance on Broberg. I’m surprised Edmonton would give up on a cheap young player so quickly.
He's not very good in the NHL. I've been able to see quite a few of their games, mainly to see the train wreck and he struggles like Barron defensively with none of the offense.

He also has bad luck, so he would be perfect for the Habs

definitely an interesting target IF Huges is looking to make an immediate talent upgrade to the top-6 for next season... i would imagine that if we did see him land in montreal, there'd be a lot confidence in their assessment of his coachability and willingness to put in the work... those don't seem to be high right now, but the Ducks didn't exactly have a great coaching group in place for his first few seasons. He's young enough that a change of scenery, with the right attitude, could go a long way.

I’d prefer they maintain that ability for the trading deadline. Maybe take back an expiring contract or perhaps involve a third team.

To Wash
Brogerg, Pearson

To Mtl
Mantha, '25 Wash 2nd,

To Edm
Allen (50% retained by Wash), R. Sutter, '24 Mtl 4th

Wash swaps Pearson for Mantha and adds Broberg at the cost of a 2nd and small retention next year.

Edm give up Broberg for Allen at under 2M$, a late pick and a Sutter to their farm team.

Mtl adds a 2nd and hopefully another pick/prospect closer to the deadline when moving Mantha with retention to a playoff contender looking for cheap fwd depth.

who says no?
