Montembeault still looks mediocre cannot ever make the playoffs until Hughes gets a #1 goalie.....Monty does not have to be Price but he at least has to put up Alex Lyon numbers.
He is actually doing relatively well given the shot volume he regularly faces. He is no Carey Price, but his save % is in the 900s and it is just a little lower than some of the top goalies in the league. Binnington’s S% is only .007 higher, and Oettinger’s S% is .001 higher.

With a better team infront of him, he would probably be a top 15 goalie in the league stats wise.

The big problem with our team right now is center depth and scoring wingers. We have one competitive line. When Dach gets back it will look better, but Celebrini would really round things out for us. :-)

Montembault’s looked very good the last couple of seasons given what he’s had to work with. He’d look a lot better on a team that isn’t a tire fire. We have no stars, no depth at forward, no defence. Goaltending is the least of our worries.
Goaltending is the #1 worry when u do not have a great team in font of you u need your goalie to be the best player and steal games.

True but the Habs with a couple of more pieces should be a very good team. If they aren't they won't win even if Fowler is the next Price. You can win Cups with mediocre goaltenders though - Binnington, Chris Nogood etc.

Well goalies like Lyon,Daccord,Ingram do not have great teams in front of them they seem to be doing fine.

That's not what the team is trying to do anymore......................laying it all on the goalie is a false narrative.
Guys like Bergevin and Therrien use to think we had a good team............lol CP31 covered over ALL of the weak points, and he left, we had nothing but overpaid vets.

You can win with pretty average goaltending, you can't win with pretty average Centre Ice depth.
Current group is trying to build a team that can collectively as a group, score goals......we all know it's not quite that simple, but the idea of the game, and winning, is to score goals.

Our offense has sucked since the Gainey/Koivu/Kovalev era.
Vegas won the Cup with Adim Hill who started the year last year, in the ECHL, I think.....so it would seem goaltending is the last concern when building your team....

Yes and Vegas had a way better team in front of Hill something that Montreal does not have...just because u are rebuilding does not mean u will be back in the playoffs in 2 or 3 years....look at Buffalo 13 years in a tow missed playoffs and they have Thompson 47 goals and Dahlin 73 points and Eichel they traded for a bog package deal ....Montreal has none of that.

Tell that to Tampa 2 cups Vasilevskiy and Panthers do not get to the finals without Bobrovsky and Vegas does not win without Hill and his .933% save percentage.
Hill kind of proves the point that goaltending isn't as important anymore. Not to mention Kuemper who sucked in the playoffs for the Avs but they still had one of the most dominant postseasons in recent memory.

All the mediocre goaltenders still were on their game at the right time.
You don’t need Price if you have a contender team in Front of him…but you need a decent goalie to play well and not be a chokey chokerton.

Yes Kuemper was mediocre but Colorado has a power house super star offensive players something Montreal does not have.

I would even add that if you have Price backing you up, it gives the team a sorry ass excuse to make bad "safe" moves up front thinking their goaltending will save them anyway. If you don't have a Price or some other overpaid goaltender, then the strategy changes and you need a much better club up front, which is the best recipe to win it.

It's the #1 goaltender recipe that is the substitute, not the other way around.

Anything happen today?
No?
Cool. Cool. Cool.
K. See you tomorrow
If nothing happens, we all know how @sampollock has an itchy finger.

If too many days go by without a trade call, @sampollock will randomly lift a blurb from a clickbait site that he’ll render via Google Translate and where the Habs will be referred to as “the Canadian”. :sarcasm:

Has he gotten into the Russian disinformation sites yet?

He extended Allen. Should have traded him though.

You have to remember the context at the time of the signing.

Monty wasn't as good as he is now. And every time Primeau got a shot, he floundered.

If Primeau played like he has most games this year, I think they'd have traded Allen and gone with a Monty/Primeau pair.

Not really. Goalies are more like place kickers in football. You don't need a superstar, but you need one who won't choke in the crucial moments.

In baseball, you don't win without quality pitching.
I completely disagree. Goalie is half the team.
