The Habs have some cap room for another Monahan in 24-25 but not 25-26 as Slaf, Guhle, X and Struble are coming off ELCs

Trading for a big cap hit without dumping equivalent $ is asking for trouble at this stage of the rebuild.

Real money will be freed in;

26-27 Price 10.5M
27-28 Gally and Andy 12M

I can see Slafkovski and Guhle both sign for 8 years, but it’s more likely that Xhekaj and Struble will be bridged.

In any event, with Allen, Dvorak and Armia off the books in 2025 (11.6M) and the cap rising to around 90M, it would be easy to sign an impactful player in the same offseason.

Even more so with Dach and Newhook signed until 2027; Price coming off the books then will pay for their raises, and more!

I've been a Habs fan long enough to know another stupid contract will replace them before they run up.

Wonder if Dawson Mercer is someone we might inquire about. Not sure the Devils will give him up but he fits the age group we have. Type of guy Hughes goes after.
They'd want one of our good young Dmen, I'd think.

But which one?

The more I think about it and the more I am convinced the best possible way to get Zegras is to dangle our 2025’s 1st. It is what makes the more sense.

Provide more context into why it makes more sense?

* Because you think that pick will be higher in the draft?
* Do you think the Ducks accept that? Delay their return for one year?
* You putting protection on it? What kind of protection? Top 10, Top 5, Lottery?
* What's your plan on who you are drafting? BPA (like a D man) or reach for a forward?

Wondering how old you are and how long you have been a Habs fan? Since 2012? I think you caught the Bergevin flu :sarcasm:

So far, Hughes and Gorton have done a wonderful job so lets not let the past affect their positive movement. Maybe we do end up with a bad contract but hopefully not.

Trading Guhle for a chance to draft Dickinson is a fire-able offence and to even consider throwing in a late first is a potential career killer. It reeks of Mike Milbury trading Luongo to draft Dipietro.

Trading Hutson for Zegras makes much more sense, then you can draft one of Dickinson/Levshunov/Silayev/Buium/Parekh etc as the logjam at D and specifically LD will be lessened by removing Hutson from the queue. .....Maybe you take a skilled forward with our 1st and take Cole Hutson with Winnipeg's 1st

I am not saying that they should necessarily trade for Zegras but just trying to make reasonable scenarios......and perhaps be a little bit silly with some other scenarios :help:
I agree with this. Looking at the ANA/PHI trade (Drysdale/Gauthier), thats exactly the kind of trade we need to do. We'll have to give to get. Hutson is our most valuable asset to do so....

Lots of UFAs on NSH.

Now why would Montreal be there?

The only players who might make some sense would be Turcotte/Kaliyev who are stuck on the Kings 4th line so they might be cheap buy-low candidates.

The other option would be maybe Hughes is looking at a guy on Nashville to wear Allen's #34 when he gets traded. :sarcasm:

The buy low trend needs to end if we want out of the rebuild. I hope they were there because one of those teams wants Allen, but then again... Maybe they shopping Primeau?

If you wonder why Habs did not claim Ruzicka.
