I really don't see them retaining on a 4 year contract.

I'm ready to move on from Anderson.

Imagine next year, if Gallagher were the only bad contract. Anderson, Armia, and Dvo all traded away, and Pearson walks as a ufa. Plenty of room in the top 12 for the young guys like Roy, RHP, Ylonen, and Heineman.

But I acknowledge I'm being overzealously impatient.

With someone like Zegras, you have to ask yourself why he’d even be available from a team like Anaheim that’s in the same position that we are in now. Young 22 year old center with a few 60 points seasons yet he’s constantly in trade talks even before the down season. The reason he’s available is because he’s soft as butter and if you have serious aspirations of winning, those aren’t the kind of players you have filling out your roster unless you’re Toronto.

Or Anaheim simply has a surplus of good young forwards.

Why did Montreal make Romanov available?

It's not because Romanov was bad.

In his text yesterday for The Athletic, Eric Duhatschek talked a little about the Zegras case, and his conclusion was clear: the Canadian and the Ducks “look like two potential partners” for a transaction involving Zegras.

We're not there yet but At some point we're going to have to pull the trigger on a big trade for an elite F. Like what Vegas did with Eichel.

This is how we're gonna solve our lack of elite talent because it definitely won't be through the draft unless we get lucky. We have the assets to do it

If I'm any competitive team and watch Matheson lately and want a cup run, I jump all over him and overpay.
DET, LA, EDM, TB should be all over him. Hughes would be a fool to let this opportunity pass (once more just like he did with Anderson). You cant fall in love with your own players

Actually NYR would also be a prime destination for him. I wonder how theyd feel about including Miller in a trade for Matheson? We could then ship Miller+ to a team in need of a yound D for a top F prospect (like Leonard in WAS).

No. Type of journeyman who risk having a career year giving it all since it would likely be his last chance. Been there done that you don't want this type of last chance journeyman in your lineup.
Buriable contract next year. Has had good AHL numbers .

Won't complain if the Habs scouts see something in him.

Zegras to Montreal just does not want to go away. Has to be something to it. Much stronger than usual rumours

Vegas made many trades to build their team.

1) The Eichel trade was a great one. Eichel's value was lower due to the question marks around the surgery that he wanted to do. Would he be the same afterwards? They got him without giving up a core piece (Tuch, Krebs, late 1st).

2) They had to make multiple trades before they got the right ones. Individual trades won't always work out along the way. The Stone trade was great. They only gave up Brannstrom and a late 1st. But the Pacioretty trade was really bad, giving up a future core piece like Suzuki.

3) the Chandler Stephenson signing was incredible. The Pietrangelo signing was a fruit of their past labor: he chose them because of all the great work they had previously done.

Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Caufield
Dach - Zegras - Newhook
Imagine the persistence Zegras rumours are because of his history with Caufield. But if Hughes is confident he can fix Zegras, get him at 75% value could be good one

Add an offensive forward like Zegras this off season.. Our defense maturing. Draft a Catton type. Team keeps improving each year. This year probably last year we draft top 10. In '25 can sign a big name UFA. Many contracts come off the books in '25.

I don't think they are that thin ... not only do they have Robertson and Knies, but also Cowan and Tverberg coming up. Last two look real good and are burning up their leagues. Also Minten is looking good for them. They are also negotiating with Maxim Tsyplakov from the KHL who would also be a minimum player. Besides, teams don't use more than a couple of these and use free agency minimum players to fill in.

Every year somebody posts that the Leafs don't have any players coming up, but every year they always show up with a bunch.

They do? 'Cause that's about as shallow of a roster on the bottom 6 and defense as you can find in the NHL.

In his text yesterday for The Athletic, Eric Duhatschek talked a little about the Zegras case, and his conclusion was clear: the Canadian and the Ducks “look like two potential partners” for a transaction involving Zegras.

Lazy and terrible article.. I read it.. He was talking about the Habs paying their first and another asset to get Zegras.

Just a brutal assumption.

Real question. You think Tampa would consider swapping Sergachev for Matheson + Hutson (+?)

They get a current replacement and the future one down the road and they get cap space.

We get a better all around player that produces at Matheson’s pace and fits our window better.

I think they wouldn’t do it, but Serge’s injury is a big one, right at the beginning of a 8 year contract, so I think his value is down a bit.

Maybe I’m way off on value

Tampa doesn't have much to trade anymore. I wouldn't bother trading contracts with term if all you can get is low picks and reclamation projects. We have enough of those already.

We won't trade for Zegras, so it's moot.

I’m honestly not so sure about that. I know that Zegras doesn’t scream 200ft player, but Hughes want to add offence, Zegras is in the same « age-group » as our young core, won’t be to much pricey, Caufield connection, can play wing or center. We’ll see.
