Would you guys give Sam Reinhart 10M per season for 7 years this summer as UFA?

Anyone think we should go and get a RD in free agency this summer? Like Matt Roy or Brett Pesce?

Kent Hughes.......................loves his leverage.
Which more often than not, has worked well for him.
But a genius we know, once said, Trades are Hard.
Said Genius is now running for coffee and bagels in a warmer climate....

Not sure the Devils move him after just 1 full season. Personally Zegras is younger and will be cheaper, knows a couple of the players and I think it makes more sense to go after him
No guarantee Devils move him but it is a possibility he makes 8.8 million and is not on the 1st PP unit and is on pace for 15 goals is a -22 and had just 2 goals for them in the playoffs last year.

Thanks so what iexactly is the issue to trade Allen and retain 50%?

The acquiring team will have a very good backup for next year as well at 2 million.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me

You can retain on 3 players max. We already retain on Petry. If you retain on Allen then you'll have just one retention slot left for next deadline with at least two players to trade in Dvorak and Savard. Dvorak will 100% need retention to be worth a good return. Savard probably not but he'll be worth more if you retain and there will be more clients (bidding war). So if you retain on Allen the return must be good. Not worth retaining for a 2nd round pick imo. We will likely be able to trade Allen next summer without retention if we accept a Pearsson like cap dump in the process.

Would you prefer Marchesseault instead?
No i'd prefer us to not do the same mistake the Laffs did with Tavares. We don't know what we have yet. We are not ready. Maybe SLafbustsky and Rainman both blossom beyond expectation like Nylander and we have to pay them 10+ millions a year. There's no reason to put "la charrue devant les boeufs" atm honestly. Let's wait and see until summer 2025 where we likely will be able to trade Price's contract away and most of the deadwood will be out too. Be patient.

So you would stay put and not use the 18M in cap space available this summer?

Use it as leverage to fleece other people in trades or take back bad 1 or 2 year contracts. Or sign some middle of the pack UFA's on prove it deals , give them ice time and flip them at the deadline.
KH is a maestro at weaponizing cap space.

Some here would have given that money to Dubois in the blink of an eye. Happy that bergevin isn't here anymore.

Why do we want to escape the rebuild so soon? It saddens me.

I would use it to acquire more picks in exchange of bad contracts with 1 year remaining if possible. But yeah i'd do nothing outside of development and continue the cleanup until summer 2025 personally. You need cap space to pay the kids and fix the eventual holes something the Laffs forgot to plan ahead.

My point is mostly we don't know what will be the holes yet. Laffs thought they needed a center but they already had Kadri and Matthews (not in their prime yet). They should have spent that money on a dman instead but to late now.

Dach could very well explode next season like Sean Couturier did in 2017-2018 and boom you now have to pay him 9+ millions. Slaf could exploded in 2 years like LeClair did back in the day and then boom another 9+ millions. In the meantime all our young dmen flopped but you spent 9+ millions on Dach, Slaf and Meier/Reinhart and you got nothing left to address the defense. Can make a trade but other GMs see you coming from a mile with their pitchfork ready.

Might as well get Robbie Schremp out of retirement if we want flashy skill that won't win you games when it matters.

The Zegras talk remains moot.. the Habs front office wants skill, but they want effective skill.. Zegras isn't effective skill unless you wanna boost tik tok numbers.

The Zegras hate is just crazy if you ask me personally. KH should be all over him if he was made available

Zegras would help offensively, but if we draft someone like Demidov/Eiserman we would have a smaller group of offensive guys (aside from Slaf/Dach) which isn't a great recipe for success come playoff time.

and ones want Kakko?
its how much the ducks want or they may not even want to trade him

to get a 30-40 goal man will cost way more that a guy like Zegras. my thoughts

who wants Kakko??? If you can get him free take a flyer on him but he’s shown way less than even Zegras has shown, which isn’t that much.

Kakko would be a cheaper acquisition cost.. and you'd hope to develop out his offensive game and potential, but if it doesn't come out, you'll still have a bottom 6er with tools and size like an Armia.

Where as Zegras costs more, is a smaller perimeter guy who has a bigger contract, too.. so Kakko at least makes more sense than Zegras.

What's moot is people speculating. KH and MSL know him and if they decide to go for it, I will trust their decision.

Best way to go is to take in a cap dump.

These retention spots are too few and too valuable. If anything, the NHL should look into expanding from the current 3 per season limitation — it would make trading so much easier.
