Ignorance is definitely a big factor.

& the volume and range of Habs fans on this board understandably irritates the smaller market teams... Heck, the arguments and disdain among Habs posters on the site is just as, if not larger lol

Bottom line though... Hard pressed to find knowledgeable fans or pundits that have actually watched/followed Monahan since he was cast off by the Flames at a high cost who don't universally recognize his strong play and impactful contributions.

Health is the major concern. His play this season certainly assuages some of that concern... And his cap hit removes the cap dump/retention need & makes it easier for a buyer to also target other roster improvements more readily.

All in all, he's one of the better deadline targets in recent years and I suspect the return will reflect that... Much to the chagrin of the less informed posters of the buying team.

There are other legitimate concerns. His slowness is overrated, but he's certainly not fast, he's not great defensively (which is what contending teams tend to look for at the deadline). And yeah, the injury history is still there (he's taken a lot of therapy days and doesn't hit any more).

But at the end of the day, center depth is very difficult to find. Monahan is productive, can play all over the line-up, is a well-liked teammate, his impacts aren't just not as bad as some portray, but are positive, and he's cost effective. Fans of other teams don't see him as ideal (fair), but also hope or assume that more C options will emerge closer to the deadline. And I don't really see it. Its likely going to be Monahan, Henrique, Roslovic and possibly Frost or Wennberg. Henrique is probably a better fit for a number of teams because of his defensive play, but you need to get double retention to get his AAV lower than Monahan's current. Roslovic isn't performing as well almost accross the board and has a much higher AAV. Frost would be expensive and there's no urgency to move him.

Teams like Colorado and Boston have almost no cap flexibility, the amount of hoops they need to jump through to pursue most other options is significant and even more costly.

would anyone trade arber for kakko straight up?

I wouldn’t trade him for Kakko. However, I would trade him while his value is high. I think he’s a 5/6 D.

Strike while the fire is hot.

I’d package him in an attempt to get Zegras.

I really think that Hugues won’t trade Monohan until newhook is ready to fill the 2nd center spot. In hope that an injury won’t jinx our trade un between…
I really think Kakko will be trade too because of their cap problems and the performance of kakko in rangers. I really wish we will acquire him. Worst case scenario, he completes a defensive trio with Beck on the third at a decent cap hit (with a possibility to fill the two first lines)

newhook is already skating but I doubt he has anything to do with Monahan trade. Habs aren't contending and not having Newhook doesn't make a difference as far as competitiveness goes.

Let’s loop back into the crazy Calgary trade algorithm.

Monahan for Florida’s 2025 1st rd pick if it doesn’t go to Calgary. Otherwise, 2026.

Two extra picks in ‘25 courtesy of Sean Monahan! Thank you, Calgary! I’d invite flames fans to my draft party where I’d be wearing a cheap knock-off Monahahaha jersey.

I dont think Newhook return have an impact on a trade. If anything, KH will trade Monahan asap just in case of injury. The team will manage one way of the other - it's not like we are trying to win.

The trigger for a trade is the return, when KH think he maximized it, the deal will happen. Problem now is that there are most likely several interested team, but too many not ready to put their best offer on the table yet.

Hard to gauge how Kuzmenko alters the VAN/CGY deal, but insider reports were pretty consistent in saying that he was not a purely negative value player. Even if Monahan is considered to be only half of Lindholm's value, we're looking at a pretty good return - even better if we take back a cap dump and/or retain salary.

If we get a decent haul for Moneyhands, we ought to have a Monahahaha nameplated jersey tailor made for the Maim Board. But, not before eggs have hatched.

Personally, Kakko seems like he could be a decent 3rd liner but at this point in time, I'll keep Arber and see how that progresses. He's not someone I would target.
Take him and try him out sure but give up little or nothing. He looks like a bust to me

Arber should be used in a combination with out first round pick + to get offensive firepower.

You take a flyer on a guy like Kakko with a rental like Moneyhands.

I don't think Kuzmenko is a real cap dump. He is in the sense that Vancouver had to free some space but he is a good player. It's a cap dump that you can get value for unlike Tanner Pearson. The guy scored 39 goals a year ago. He's paid too much but there will be interest at the deadline 2025 if he bounce back just a bit next season and he'll have lot of TOI and new contract insensitive to do so. It's very possible he is worth at least a 2nd round pick next deadline.

I have prepared to be disappointed. I don't have a good feeling about it.
If it were to happen after the year he is having, Hughes should be raked over the coals.

There is no excuse to jeopardize such an asset.

Like you, I have a bad feeling as well.

I would simply because the team wants to keep Marty as coach and he seems to have a knack for helping young forwards but has a poor track record for defenders so far (most have regressed, Arber being a prime example). I think a potential big body 50 point winger has more value than a bottom pairing fighter.

Come to think of it, should Hughes needlessly delay a Moneyhands trade by arguing over fringe elements and the risk of injury materializes, then there should be a Monahahaha jersey made for that too.

Monahan should be sat 2 weeks before the tdl or when a trade is likely to happen soon.

Scratching Monahan a whole month before the tdl doesn't make any sense.
