NYR taking calls on Kakko. Dissapointing season, but he is playing third line with limited ice-time (average of 13:27 on the season). He was close to .5 PPG the past two seasons while playing an average of around 15:20, and only three points on the PP.

Is Hughes interested? Seems like the kind of player he would trade for, disregarding the fact that Gorton was the GM that drafted him.

What would you offer? They are down a C right now, so Monahan would be a good pickup for them, but we would need to add a lot more to that.

He's got 2 goals in his last 5, 3 in his last 10.

Maybe he's getting things figured out again.

I'd be interested in him, but it sounds like the Habs and Rangers won't be making a deal.

His shooting percentage is actually better than last year, where he scored 18. His assists are way down, and that could be due to playing a lesser role. I am not sure. 22 assists last year compared to just 1 this year. Why do you say the Habs and Rangers won't be making a deal?

I forgot.

I was listening to the sick podcast on the way home. It was posted a few days ago I think, so this might not be new information at all and I apologize for that.

Engels says he knows of 3 teams thar have expressed interest in Monahan.

He seems convinced he (Monahan) will return a 1st.

He said a person at Sportsnet doubted Plekanec would get a 2nd as a return. They made a bet and he returned a 2nd, Valiev and I think Rychel.

I believe Engels said the Avs don't have interest in Monahan. I could be mistaken on the team, but he did say a team is for sure not interested in Monahan.

Maybe it was the Rangers.

The Rangers are locked in to players aged 28-32 (Panarin, Zib, Kreider, Trochek, Goodrow, Trouba, Shesterkin). Monahan fits there nicely at 29. Another player that could fit nicely there is.... Matheson (29). The Rangers also have a healthy amount of capspace... Enough to fit both players minus Kakko... Just thinking out loud here.

I really liked him at the time of the draft. He looked like someone who had everything to be a dominant player offensively. I think he could be a Dach-like reclamation project. I don't think the IQ or the skill went anywhere and he has that in a 6'3" frame. This team would be much more of a fit than the Rangers. The only thing I don't know is how his work ethic is outside of the rink. Kravtsov had everything to be a superstar and broke playoff records in the KHL, but he lacked the professionalism necessary to be an NHLer.

Not sure how much his Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease have impacted his early career struggles.

Habs do have an insider they can call upon to provide detailed info on Kakko…. one Saku Koivu

Here's a summer trade pitch...

To AZ
Xhekaj, Ylonen (or RHP or Pez), Price

To Mtl
Hayton

Zona has 13M$ in LTIR cap coming off the books this summer. With he cap (& floor) rising, I suspect they will be looking for more LTIR targets to help with cap compliance (while insurance pays the bills)... Price's deal gives them 2more years of 10.5M buffer to the floor.

They have no NHL D signed for next year (5 RFA's+ 3 UFAs), Xhekaj could easily claim a top 6 spot with them.
One of RHP, Ylonen, Pez gives them additional cheap W depth.

With their 3 vet C's signed next year, plus Cooley (& Geekie/Raty possibly pushing for a spot), Hayton & his RFA raise may be expendable...

For us, Hayton is a nice fit at 3C behind Suzuki/Dach and age-wise fits in well to grow with our young core.
Interesting take? I don't know Hayton well enough to comment. But to give up Wifi we need solid asset.

Florida won the President's Trophy in 2022.

They went to the Cup Final in 2023.

They are near the top of the league in 2024.

Their only dip early last year was due to injuries.
Injuries can happen again with an aging team. They only made the playoffs last year because Pittsburgh couldn't even beat Chicago in the last game of the season.

How much of a raise is Reinhart getting this offseason? If they keep him, that likely means bye-bye to Forsling and Montour.

Another writer arguing that a 1st is obtainable based on precedents:

Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Barclay Goodrow, Blake Coleman, Nick Foligno et Ryan O’Reilly étaient tous des joueurs de centre dans une situation similaire à celle de Monahan lorsqu’ils ont changé d’adresses. Ils ont tous valu à leur ancienne formation, au minimum, un choix de premier tour.

He’s claiming that Pageau, Goodrow, Coleman, Foligno and ROR, all of them centers, were in a similar situation to Monahan when they were traded and they all fetched at least a 1st rounder.

Goodrow not the best comparable since he had another year on his contract at a bargain salary. Plus, none of these guys had the significant injury and surgery history that Monahan owns.

Other argument he offers is that the market options at centre, are slim once you get through Lindholm ($4.85M) and Henrique ($5.825M). Monahan earns so little that he shouldn’t require any retention and that could be a huge advantage with cap-strapped teams.

The market has not heated up on account of there being too many teams who are still in it but who have not yet seen their chances at a playoff spot compromised enough for them to give up on the season.

If the habs get offered a 1st rd pick for Wifi they should take it. Wifi is a 5/6/7 D and with the org depth at D, another 1st pick can be used to get another Dach type trade.

Don’t know about ya’ll but I am enjoying not getting frustrated by this team for a few days.

Read somewhere today about Monahan potentially landing Habs Zegras however I don’t see it from the ducks perspective.

You can also read "somewhere" that dragons are real and the earth is flat.

Monahan is not fetching Zegras lol.

Colorado in win-now mode

Monahan, Savard, Allen 50% retained, Gallagher, Evans, Norlinder, Ylonen
for
Johansen, Girard, Lehkonen, 4th round pick, conditional 2nd pick, changes to 1st if St. Louis attains Conference Final

They get 4 guys to help them win, lose one guy who helps them and take on one bad contract. They also get two younger guys who may possibly replace players who left.

Habs get one good player, two bad contracts a mid-round pick and either a very late first or mid to later second.

Far too optimistic! As a sidenote, unless the Habs somehow unearth a gem with COL 2024 2nd, pretty sure Hughes would ask for a mulligan on the Lekhonen/Barron trade… the former would look great with Suzuki-Caufield…

I mean it's likely to be Florida's first in the 2025 draft, which looks like it will be in the 20s.

The only way it's not that is if Calgary gets the 11th to 15th pick in 2020-2025 or if both Florida and Calgary do really badly in 2024-2025 and it moves to 2026. I think both those scenarios are unlikely. I'd move the pick for Zegras.
Both Florida and Calgary have some important piece hitting UFA at the end of the season which could drastically impact the team, I’m not moving that pick before I’m sure what we got.

Monahan for Kakko does make a lot of sense. Value wise it's probably about right, he checks a lot of boxes that our management seem to value and same goes for the Rangers. It really comes down to how much both sides believe Kakko just needs time/change of scenery to unlock his draft potential.

The player that he has a chance to become is Nichushkin. Kakko is a dominant defensive player, with terrific forechecking ability and is a beast along the boards.

He had 18g, and 40 pts last year, but has taken a step back this year offensively. He's still only 22. He plays his off-wing generally.

I would definitely be interested in getting him, but it doesn't sound like Montreal & NYR like each other too much.
