It's not just about contract spots. It's about roster spots. We're at 22 / 23 spots, with Newhook needing a spot. Once he comes back, someone will go down to keep us at 22 going into the trade deadline.

We need to keep roster flexibility in case we need to take contract dumps from other teams. I see no reason to add anyone at this time unless it's in a trade.

I completely disagree with his point.
Don’t forget that other transactions could happen, one of which could involve a goalie and that could create yet another roster spot.

Those roster spots are not set in stone, there will be flux and that could have been factored into a 30-day Ruzicka audition.

I think they're already at 23 roster players.
And the contract limit is 50. They're at 46 right now.

Yeah, capfriendly.com has us at 22, but they haven't added Condotta to the roster yet, so yes, we're at 23 with Condotta, which means we're at 23 with Newhook. We can't add anyone as long as Condotta is on the roster.

Hopefully, we trade a goalie post All Star break to get us back to 22. That's what we should be at from post-All Star break to TDL.

Florida dumped a 6’3 goalie and the Peg released a 6’5 D and both are still Habs and Monty in particular, can be the no. 1 goalie for the foreseeable future.

You just never know.
Kovacevic was available because there were no roster spots for him and they preferred another player over him. But it is true that just because one GM doesn't like a player is not proof he is not an NHL player.

Are we not short of centres? If Ruzicka had zero upside, the Yotes would have passed too. I don’t see any downside risk of claiming him.

I liked his play in CGY last year and was initially hoping we’d grab him but almost every CGY poster said the same thing about him: doesn’t use is size, not really a C, not good in a bottom 6 role, motor often is off.

I would have still grabbed him but maybe things like giving Condotta a chance to play on the NHL is the kind of things that helps us re-sign those good AHL vets

Ah, lol my bad.

Natey's response confused me. (wouldn't be the first time) :sarcasm:
I could've been clearer so no worries, but yes talking about Lias.

Sure he isn't great but the point is we have plenty of tankable centers with NHL experience waiting in the rafters, and we probably get one bad one back in a trade

He's been decent in the AHL and I know Gorton wants to give his boy another chance, that's why I guarantee we see him to finish the year.

Here
Curious; anyone here want to trade high on Monty? He looks like a #1 out there, and we need it, but I’m guessing value wise there’s probably a deal out there…

Not gonna happen after the extension, he is our only tradeable goalie though, or was at least

I doubt Laine is someone we'd be after.
Probably not wrong. He's had a tough career to this point with a lot of injuries and some questionable teams around him.

Won't find much higher upside in a "reclamation" project though. Made of glass, not typically engaged physically or defensively, lots of drama around him over the years, is a UFA in a couple seasons... but if he pulls it together we're looking at a guy with the potential to be amongst the top scorers in the NHL.

No idea what CLB would want as they have a lot of good young players up front and on the back end - the logjam is ridiculous. However, in the bigger picture around the rebuild, I'd rather take a shot at Laine than hoard picks.

I mean don't get me wrong, I'd still like to know what the ask is but it's probably very high. If Laine hits and we draft Lindstrom, we would have one of the biggest top 6 in the league that are all skilled which is super enticing.

Laine-Dach-Slafkovsky
Caufield-Suzuki-XXXX (2024 pick?)
Newhook-Dvorak-Roy
RHP-Evans-Gallagher

If they stay healthy that's likely the best Habs forward group in decades. Having both Caufield and Laine in the lineup may make things tricky but the rest of the forwards are pretty versatile.

Laine straight up for Anderson?

Or Dvorak + Armia?

Uhhhhh, no. Depends on the injury concerns and whether a team can fit his cap hit, but probably Anderson + CGY 1st + ? might be closer.
