Trading for his rights would likely be a waste of time. Nylanders are all about the cash. He will go to UFA to make sure he gets the most he can possibly get (unless they offer 14-15 mil).

unless i'm mistaken, i think that trading for the rights allows for the habs to add the extra year to the offer, so if your assessment of "the nylanders" is correct, then trading for his rights before July 1st is exactly what a team should do if they are serious about landing him and not concerned with giving him the UFA premium that will be necessary to sign him.

not sure i'd want to go 8 years at UFA premium on Nylander, but if they are sold on him being elite for the next 5+ years, then i could see us being a bidder

I would absolutely look into Patrick Laine. 25 and if they could retain a bit he would be under Suzuki and Caufield.
I'd definitely be asking the price if Columbus considers shopping him. I have no clue what direction Columbus is intending to go now though, they're sort of in limbo.

Getting Laine would certainly help bolster our top 6 though. We'd have a 2nd scoring threat and then we'd have the option to run Suzuki/Laine on line 1 and Dach/Caufield on line 2 to spread out the size and scoring.

The only way I can see us landing him is if they're interested in futures though, if they're looking to retool and "fix" their team now then we probably have nothing that interests them.

They sent him to the AHL and treated him like shit when he was in the NHL. He will be available at some point if he isn't already.
Well I guess everyone becomes available eventually. He's not available now, Laine might be.

i see what you are saying... but i also think that GM "value" and fan "value" differ immensely and that generally speaking, GM value (or, more specifically, player evaluation) doesn't fluctuate nearly as quickly.

IF the habs pro scouting eval on KK was positive this summer, his 15-game struggles this year would do little to change their read on him imo. Hughes has already asserted that they approach player acquisition from the POV of their own value assessment (less concerned with market/perceived value than with their own evaluation when it comes to pulling the trigger).

that's what I mean when I suggest that the bigger variable in this theoretical trade would be the rangers level of interest in Monahan and their internal decision on KK, and the number of suitors for Monahan (which could open the door to other targeted prospects or pick collateral the habs are targeting)
Yes 15 games hasn't been long enough to drastically change the evaluation of Kakko, but for similar reasons Monahan's health is still going to weigh down his trade value because 18 games doesn't prove he can stay healthy and a Monahan that can't stay healthy is not worth very much at all.

indeed :sarcasm:

Monahan for Kakko...

Wonder if that could have legs in January assuming Monahan stays healthy & Kakko continues to struggle?

What about Marian Hossa? Joe Pavelski? Pietrangelo? Kessel?
Do you want Kent to take this risk? Do you believe he is going to have a similar career as Pavelski or Hossa? He is having a career year on a offensive team like Toronto. He is going to be able to do the same with us?

Do you pay him 10m+ to bring him with Montreal?

Wouldn't a lot of this depend on the draft?

If you win Macklin Celebrini, you probably think differently.. if you don't, Nylander may be the best bet to get a legitimate offensive star into your top 6. I don't have an issue paying Nylander, he's awesome.

The team is gonna need offensive fire power one way or the other.

Nylander probably be great fit in Montreal. The pressure in Toronto don't seem to bother him. It will be a factor here considering the contract he will commander
