I think we are definitely claiming him if he makes it to us.
I wonder if Hughes tried to deal for him — would have been better than putting in a waiver claim, he wouldn’t have cost much.

Profile as per the Forecaster looks intriguing:

SCOUTING REPORT
The strapping Slovak has the size and skill to grow into an effective power forward. He is smart and mobile, protects the puck well and has improved his consistency at each level he has played at before reaching the NHL. He needs to get quicker and be game-to-game consistent because he is not going to dominate on sheer talent--as he did in junior hockey.

I like this, let's keep it going.

Flyers with Carter Hart out.. enter Jake Allen.
Calgary with Dillon Dube out.. enter Joel Armia.
HC Ambri-Piotta with Formenton out.. enter Brendan Gallagher.

6’4” fellow Slovak for Slaf. Why not?

Armia is very trade-able: A buyout in 2024-25

Same thing for Dvorak.

They will both be gone at the end of next season . No need to buy any contract. They are also going to play at 120% for a contract next season. I don't see the habs making the playoff in 2025. So no rush.

Probably 35-40pts for Dvorak and 25-30pts for Armia next season. Last chance for a NHL contract (before retiring).

Turcotte is too injury prone and doesn’t have top-6 upside. He’s not struggling to succeed in the NHL, he’s struggling to even crack the league as a 4th liner. From what I’ve seen in the AHL, there’s not a single definable trait that makes me think he’s got more upside than what he’s shown to this point. Maybe he becomes similar to Jake Evans, but we have guys in-house on similar pathways.

Dellandrea has shown he can stick in the league - he’s a bit more interesting and has some jam to his game. That’s quite a bit of value back for Monahan.

Holloway is another one I’d look at. I think he can become a legitimate middle-6 player if he escapes Edmonton.
We already whiffed with Turcotte's Dad, let's just take a pass.

Paying another team with a low pick so they buyout your players is a common strategy, and we can get reclamation projects this way, so they are trade-able, no doubts in my mind.

Whether you want to do it or not that's a different argument.

I don't think he'll make it to us, but I'd put a claim in on Ruzicka. Another big Slovak and this time a C.

Yes, haven’t seen him play this year but last year in CGY (the game Monahan got hurt in) he was very effective as a bottom 6 guy with decent skating and shot. Can’t be worse than “no one”.

Edit: guessing they may not have been aware but why not spend one of our many 7th rd pick to grab him ? Even if it’s to send him to Laval after. Now he’s likely gonna be grabbed by someone else.

He won’t make it to the Habs. The whole moar size, age and ability to play C will make him a target.
Only the Sharks have a roster spot.
Anaheim, Buffalo, Columbus, Ottawa and Chicago have to send down a waiver exempt player to make the space for tomorrow 2pm and they would be sending down a better player except maybe for Chicago.

But Chicago has already claimed two players in January and that actually cost money (waivers pick-up aren't actually free ).

Great point. Not to mention that Granlund is supposed to be back soon anyway meaning the Sharks would have to waive someone to activate him.
