Make it bottom 27 protected, annually!! If they are not drafting in the top 5, the pick slides to the next year, and the next year, and the next year, etc. Eventually McDavid will retire and we will get a high pick.
I’m not waiting for that. It’s bad enough we need a crack team of Supreme Court lawyers to figure out the Calgary 1st

My Take.
Edmonton want Monty Habs are offering Primeau.
End result NO TRADE
When it was announced that the Habs started negotiation with Monty, Gascon from Radio-Canada said that the media people following the team found it very surprising. The word behind the curtain is that the Habs management do not like Monty (for undisclosed reasons).

So if the media have the right impression, Habs would have traded Monty. Edmonton probably doesn't want to trade for a UFA goalie thought, they want terms.

Too awesome to be believable.

I don't mind going after Kakko, but I would expect Monahan to bring in much more then that so if anything I would expect the Rangers to be adding to make the deal happen not us.

It's an interesting one... Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

I tend to think Monahan will return very high value, if healthy... A later 1st + a decent prospect (mid-late 2nd value equivalent).

Something around Newhook's trade value.

Is Kakko worth more than Newhook was last summer? Same draft, very similar ppg production (Kakko with ~70 extra games). Obviously KK was the higher rated prospect, and probably retains a slightly higher ceiling, but it'd be hard to argue he's got significant more value at this point despite the draft pedigree.

So I could see a bit added from either side frankly. Would all depend on what other offers Hughes has on the table... And I wouldn't be surprised to see 1-2 GMs go very aggressive and make a very high value pitch. If so, how much Hughes valued Kakko & how badly the Rangers want to both upgrade their C position AND keep Monahan away from a rival contending team, would be the deciding factor on who adds...

I like the fit for us a lot.

Sorry buddy, gonna have to call bs on this one.

There are no insiders in Montreal....just low level vermin who speculate themselves into a frenzy.

Montembeault has a very short track record of success at the NHL level and management are just doing their due diligence.

If they don't like him, they would have dealt him instead of DeSmith.

Seems very far fetched and honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's a dinosaur trying to spin this yarn so he can say the Habs don't like French-Canadian players and just ignore the fact that Quebec is producing less and less talent.

His value was very likely higher then Newhook's over the summer since he was coming off a 40 point season and up to that point had been progressing season over season. But this year his 2 points in 15 games in his D+5 season is a serious red flag, if as you suggested he continues to struggle then he'll lose significant value. He goes from being a guy whose potential is being realized just much slower then people thought/expected to a guy who looks likely to never be more then a 3rd liner.

Now I get that you shouldn't write off a young guy because of one bad season which is why I would still be interested in acquiring him even if he struggles the whole season instead of less then 20 games. Just not at the price equivalent to a late 1st + good prospect, if Kakko gets his season back on track to be the ~40 points player he showed last year, then that price becomes much more reasonable.

Only way MTL is in a goalie deal with EDM, is a 3rd team to help with money
Oilers need to move out sone bug contracts and use assets to get cheap contracts like Tampa did.

Campbell, Nurse, Cesi, and Kulak need to be moved out.

They need a goalie, the right dcore and one more top 6 forward.

Doesn’t sound like Edmonton wants anything to do with Allen. It’ll have to do with Montembault or Primeau which won’t require a lot of money to move either way.

Anyone think the lack of a Montembault contract announcement is connected to a potential trade? Friedman had thought it was imminent two weeks ago.
Personally I'd keep Monty. I have no faith in Primeau anymore and Allen, well Allens Allen. He can be good or bad. Mostly ok but not a number 1. He's here until we can get something better. At this point in the rebuild he's ok.

Ideally we keep our 2 younger goaltenders, Allen goes. Primeau has shown some really nice things so far and still very young.

They dislike Monty so much that he was one of the few players at the rookie camp after the draft this summer, hanging with MP Poulin, Bouillon and others.

Not saying he won't be the odd man out, but I don't think they dislike him per say.

Id love it if Hughes could manage to get this years unprotected (or like top 2 protect) first from EDM. Maybe by taking on Campbell and sending Savard with Montembeault the other way they could be tempted. Like Campbell, 2024 first (top 2 protect) and 2025 first (top 10 protect) for Monty and Savard.

Then send the lowest of those 2025 first along with a nice prospect like Farrell or Beck to NAS for Askarov (send him in the AHL for the year especially with how bad our goalies have been this year in Laval). With this, G would be secured for the next 10 years alongside our D. We could then use our other first on top 6 forwards which is what we are lacking the most.

That's huge risk.

I’d love to buy-low on Kakko but I feel 2pts in 15gp is a damning.

We need sexy, fluid, instinctive skill. So, even if that skill has not produced due to lack of TOI or linemates or just luck it should still be there and visible.

I’m afraid Monahan for Kakko might be a good value trade but it wouldn’t get us what we need.
