More tidbits from Friedman:

Edmonton is not an attractive destination and a lot of players have them in their NTC so that is hurting the oilers.

Lekhonen's injury is very significant and team is looking for scoring help.

Shocker that Drouin and Tatar haven't brought them that secondary scoring they need.

Can Ininterest them in Armia, Pearson, Dvo, Anderson, or Gallagher at 50% retained?

Except Cory Schneider net Van 9OA - Bo Horvat

And CamTalbot got two good returns: once a 2nd and a 3rd. Then later Erik Gustavsson...

Toskala also got the Sharks a 1st and a 2nd.

And Andrew Raycroft was traded for Tuka Rask.

Value comes from team willing to take Campbell's contract.

That much cap space needs a lot coming back the other way. A team can get a really good player for 5M per year over 4 years. They'd have to weaken their team by such a player to take on that contract.

Plus having a goalie asset that’s either willing to waive for Edm or doesn’t possess the contractual power to have a say

Thus market for Edm to seek out a G option is reduced even further - Monty looks to be Oilers target

If we wanted to take back Campbell's contract and give up Monty, the price would have to be astronomical. And I'm not sure Edmonton is looking to put so many of their chips in on Monty.

When options are limited, beggars can’t be choosers.

Besides Holland’s contract is up after this season, he’s moving on w new McDavid’s CEO in place …. last hurrah / leaving a legacy mentality in play

Lots of red flags with Laine, for sure, but the lad is still only 25 and, perhaps, he hasn't met the right destination yet. As much as Columbus might be a quaint destination, it might not stimulate one as much
If a high priced, supposedly highly talented player needs some form of simulation to perform then I take a pass and let another team have to deal with his motivational issues. 25 years old or otherwise.

If that goes bad though, his legacy goes bad.

Supposedly, John Ferguson Jr. can't go out grocery shopping in Toronto without getting harassed for the legacy he left the Leafs with.

I'd rather send Gallagher to his hometown if we take Campbell, and take a smaller compensation that Edmonton might sign off on, cause I don't think they are interested in 3 firsts. EDM could use a player like Gally.

If we send Monty rather than Jake, perhaps we get a bit more.

Calgary 1st + Newhook + Beck + Engstrom + Bogdan + Dvo 50% retained.
Its rare to see so many pieces in a trade but those players would all be available for Laine.
The 1st of calgary, 2 prospect and 1 nhl players retained should get the job done.
In term of prospects with value, I would be ready to add Roy and Strubble

Laine would be our best player. Right now he seem disgruntled but with MSL, the ultimate players coach, he could find his groove back. Hes big, still young and has a laser of a shot. He would be quite an addition

Or maybe he will want to sabotage the team for 10 years like Bargain Bin.

I don't think it's enough though. I think Newhook would have to increase his trade value.

I tried to think of something similar to what LA gave up in the Dubois trade. But at the time Vilardi was the big piece, and Iafallo is a solid NHLer. We need a big piece. The Calgary 1st is trending to be the late Florida 1st in 2025, though it could be a spectacular piece. But it comes with a lot of risk. I think Columbus would ask for Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Slaf, or Guhle. Slaf would be an interesting one to think of, considering the age gap. Will Laine get healthy again? How long will his career be? Can he avoid breaking down? Not sure. If I knew Laine would be healthy and good until 35 I'd trade Slaf for him.

Hence the appeal of a Monty signed over several years, provided no NTC is included. That extension would make him very appealing to Edmonton.

I think that's why the cost for Edmonton to get rid of the contract would be severe. I'd say should be loose to the value of three 1sts just to lose his contract. If they add a goalie back, they'd have to pay for that goalie as well. No GM is doing Holland a favour and they know Edmonton is desperate, despite them saying they won't make a desperate trade. Hint: they will.

Always one of their biggest issues. Getting players to stay in Edmonton. Agree with Monty being the target.

The buyout amount isn't huge, it's just long. That being said, Oil already have Hyman and don't need or want Gally plus he has a 6 team NTC so he'd have to want to go to Edmonton. I'd rather keep Gally for now and get as much in return from Oilers as I can and worry about him when he becomes an issue, which he hasn't been so far this year. Take the loot and don't worry about Gally until you have to worry about Gally.
