His value may never be as high as right now (I know, it's still not much) and keeping him may not help as we are not in win mode. Beside, like you said this would free up a spot on LD which would allow to play hudson (if he sign) or Arber.

Down side is that you now have to rely on Barron on the PP (at least until Husdon come over)
Guhle and Barron can be used on the two waves, Guhle not getting PP time is astronomically stupid. We need to develop his offensive game.

Man, hockey players are turning into NBA players

I won't complain in the sense that the NBA consistently makes blockbuster deals. NBA players do have power enough to dictate where they want to go. However, we can never criticize the NBA for being unafraid to make blockbuster trades.

I wish the NHL had a little more of that.

I don't mind blockbusters, I just don't want all the garbage and BS where those clowns ask for trades every year or two.

I love my wife. I've been with her for a while. We've built a family.

Also, I would like to be married to Angelina Jolie, or Megan Fox.

If you were an NBA player, you would have had them all.

Now, do you want to be an NHL player and stay with your wife and family and be afraid to make into reality having Angelina Jolie or Megan Fox?

Moving Savard accomplishes several things-
Gets the Habs a good return.
Opens up a space for younger players.
Makes the Habs worse in the short term which might help the rebuild on draft day.

I think Matheson makes more sense to trade this year, then Savard can go next year. Losing Matheson makes the team worse than losing Savard.

Matheson continues to rack up points and his value is at all time high as he's on pace for almost 60 points. We have Guhle, Struble, Harris and Xhekaj in the AHL who all play their best on left side. Also we might see Hutson get some games in at the end of the season.

On the right side without Savard we have Barron and Kovacevic on the right side, however in the AHL our best option is Mailloux who needs more time in the AHL so Savard isn't really holding anyone back.

My guess is they are purposely not using him there so he can't add this as an asset (assuming he's productive) to his contract negotiations.

Savard is not getting traded this season. The RDs are not developed to the point they don't need his babysitting anymore and the Habs have zero NHL depth at the position.

Matheson is the one who is expendable and LD is where the team needs to open spots for the young players. But that's probably an off-season trade with his term.

There's no rule that Montreal can't play a left shot D on the right side, and neither Matheson nor Savard are directly babysitting any young D (other than taking top-4 minutes and tougher matchups away from other guys). Matheson and Savard play together at ES and on the PK. If you were to trade one (assuming there would be strong offer out there), you trade the one that gets the best return. I think that Savard would be that player, but the return would be what matters more.

I think Monahan, Allen and Kovacevic get traded at TDL.

Monahan for a 2nd round pick
Allen for a 4th no retention + expiring salary
Kovacevic for a 3rd

We need Savard next year and he will probably net a 1st at 2025 TDL. Too much years left on Matheson and Anderson deals to be traded now.
Make sense.
But i would really try hard to get a first rd pick for Monahan + 2nd (avs)

Those of you who are expecting a 1st for Monahan are going to be very disappointed, especially since it seems like HuGo will trade him to the team that Monahan wants instead of prioritizing the best return possible.

That's now how I took was what reported at all. The "a team of his choice" was for a none-contender. In other words, if no contenders match Hughes's price, Monahan gets to pick the none-contender (who also made an offer) where he goes.

And since I doubt Dreger spoke directly to Monahan or Hughes about it, it's probably all BS anyway.

“We have to go back to the off-season when the Canadian signed Sean Monahan . They had an agreement at that time that said he would be traded when the time was right to a competitive team or a team of his choice, nothing has changed on that. » -Darren Dreger

I am torn in trading him, like him as a player. But I sure hope Kent gets a good prospect for him. or a #1

A telling sign of ongoing discussions between the two teams emerged when Pagnotta revealed the Jets sent two scouts to yesterday's game at the Bell Centre. Although teams frequently send scouts across the league, the presence of more than one scout generally indicates serious interest in evaluating a player. Winnipeg has several promising young talents that could attract the interest of Kent Hughes. Additionally, they hold the Canadiens' second-round pick for the 2024 draft, a pick expected to be a top-40 selection based on the team's current ranking.
You should send that quote to the habs fan on the mainboard having a meltdown about Hughes deliberately tanking Monahans value by letting him choose where he's traded.

My understanding is not of a deal where Matheson decides who he wants to get traded to, but that Montreal will trade him to a contender.

That way, Matheson, a looming UFA gets to have built up his value in an environment he likes, playing big regular season minutes in Montreal and an important role elsewhere in the playoffs.

The only disadvantage would be that the first round pick from a team acquiring Monahan to hopefully cement a playoff spot could be worth more than that from a clear contender about to embark on a long playoff hunt.

If Monahan gets traded to a contender of his choosing, then not necessarily. That reduces Hughes' leverage.
Nah it will be a minimal difference, the value is the value. I doubt he’s like ONLY EDMONTON or something either, he will work with Kent who will get market value.

Would love to trade Matheson im sure some GM would bite on a good return bcuz of hes offense but hes a mess defensively and we have tons of LD’s waiting but unfortunately i dont see it happening atleast not this season

He’s on 20+ goals and close to 50 point pace.
He will get a 1st or prospect equivalent for sure.
He's slow, poor defensively, and below average at 5v5. He's a PP and faceoff specialist at this stage of his career. Maybe a conditional 1st if the team he gets traded to makes the conference finals, but there's essentially no chance he gets a 1st on his own.
