There's no reason to keep Kovacevic, you can sign someone like him anytime in free agency when you want to be competitive. His contract is very enticing for a contending team up against the cap.
I don’t agree with that, I think Kovacevic is quietly becoming a very dependable, physical defender, with an underrated ability to move the puck. I’d rather keep him, he’s exactly the kind of defenseman we need. Reliable, smart and cheap.

I would not mind trading Anderson for someone that does not necesseraly produce more but for someone that is more physical. Someone that that makes you pay the price outthere.

What value does that provide for us longterm that is worth more than a 1st? He won't be cheap after next season where he will be making like 3 million per year.

Do you think you’re honestly getting a 1st for Kovacevic from any contender? If so, which one?

And I seriously doubt he’s getting paid 3 million AAV, although he may top out there. I suspect he’ll be in the 2 to 2.5 million for a 3-4 year deal, and I think that’s fair for what he brings.

If Kulak got a 2nd, then Kovacevic+mid pick will get a 1st similar to how Barclay Goodrow got a 1st. With the cap rising he will probably be closer to 3 million, look at Tucker Poolman who's worse than him.

Habs don t have much value on their roster. Only 1st rounders they could get would be for healthy Monahan, Savard. Anything else has close to no value. The entirely ironic thing is that if it were not for getting Dach and resigning Allen, they may have been in contention for Bedard.

If Pezzetta and Belzile and Allen weren't playing over their heads the Habs would've finished bottom 3-4.

If Devils weren’t willing to trade Mercer for Meier, they won’t trade him for anything we have.

If New Jersey want to get tougher for the playoffs:

To MTL: Dawson Mercer
To NJD: Josh Anderson (50% retained) + ?

The question becomes, what's the question mark. Calgary's 1st? Engstrom? Bogdan? Farrell? Mesar? Ylonen?

Why exactly would NJ trade a player who, in his second NHL season, had 27 goals and 29 assists for 56 points -- for Anderson and some future player, or even a draft pick with an unknown ranking?
Because HF logic

I disagree, he seems like a good complementary player, MTL just does not have the core players to make him better than he is.
So we agree. He is a complimentary player, but was he worth the 1st and the 2nd pick we gave up for him? I think no. Players like Newhook are fairly available for far less or as UFAs. The idea behind trading for him was as a Dach type trade where they hoped he’d be more than he had shown. So far, he’s exactly as he’s always been which to me is a disappointment as they hoped for more. Hence the “we lost the trade” comment.

I don’t think he’s a bad player or doesn’t belong on the top 9. Just don’t think he was worth the price, and hopefully won’t come back to bite Habs in the ass and he shows more in the future. But as of now, it’s a “L” for me.

By the same token, the AVS did have those complementary players and he wasn’t better than he is either. But, there’s still time to find out if there’s more under the hood. His IQ seems suspect and he’s shown he’s not a centre, but at least he can be slotted accordingly.

I would only point out Zibenajad’s first two seasons w NYR were 37 & 41 pts before breaking out at age 25.5 (D+7)

As for the price, Habs gave up a 31OA + 37OA - historical odds that pick ever plays in the NHL is less than 10% vs acquiring an actual NHLer who’s 22-years old

Pretty slam dunk IMO

And I HOPE Newhook can do that. But he hasn’t so far and I can’t make an assessment on what he could do, but rather what he has done. And what he has done isn’t very impressive to date and has never had more than 33 points in a season.

If the value was for his potential, he certainly hasn’t shown it yet in my opinion despite being given ample time in the top 6.

When you see what kind of players are traded for a late first round pick. I think Hughes paid a fair price for Newhook. Lets give him some time to acclimate to his new team. I think he can be a good player for us.
