Why would washington do that, though. Armia has still next year of contract.
The article said Armia wouldn't end up in WAS per that deal, so, perhaps Montreal takes one year of a bigger contract (to move at the deadline) and WAS moves Armia elsewhere for a lesser cost and frees both the Mantha and Armia salaries right away (ex: WAS pays a 2nd round pick to move Armia elsewhere, rather than a 1st round pick to move Mantha).

WAS knows it just keep its first round picks with the average age of the lineup and rebuild happening soon enough.

Montreal agrees total on Mantha's higher salary for the extra year of Armia and hopes Roland more draft assets for Mantha at the trade deadline?

"Cycling back to the Canadiens, I’m told the Habs did indeed have a conversation with the Washington Capitals about local boy Anthony Mantha and Montreal forward Joel Armia was part of the discussion, but I am not sure Washington would have been his final landing spot. Those talks have quieted down but could get revisited if the Capitals reengage."

Probably something related to Washington being on Garland, but Vancouver wanted a D and not a forward as a (smaller than Garland's cap) cap dump. Friedman had Washington being on Garland a few days ago (along 2 other teams).

after we received a first round to take him, we should get a first round by trading him at the dead line.

Then we could re-sign him next summer to mentor the young players and trade him again for a first… cool pattern here 🤣
Like Toronto did with Daniel Winnik, they trade him in back to back TDL for 2nd + + after signing him as a UFA.

They save on the cap this year. And next year, with the cap going up, Armia's cap his is easier to have. And it being the final year of his deal, Caps can move him.

Also, with Armia clearing waivers, Caps can send him to Hershey and save even more on the cap.

Ottawa is struggling and they need to sort out this Shane Pinto situation. Oddly though, Dorion doesn't seem to have a sense of urgency.

I don't know if Pinto might be a difference maker but I do know he is a 6 foot 3/4 C who has some skill, can skate and scored 20 goals with a FOW % north of 50 in year 3. I also know he has missed training camp and no matter his training regime it will take him a while to catch up. And more delay makes it worse.

Dorion had no money to make a better offer, but by now he should have been able to offload a salary. There are teams with Cap space but obviously Ottawa hasn't offered enough to make the trade. Bizarre .Bold trades and Dorion also did a great job in signing his young guys. Now he sits.

Something has to give and whether it's it's Cap dump or Pinto trade, Hughes needs to try to be involved.
Pinto be good fit now that Dach is out. Move Newhook back to wing. But the costs? Maybe one of our young defense?

With Savard gone for a couple of months, it could be interesting to see how much Cal Foote would cost. He is signed for one season by NJ. he is a RHD. And we know that Mailloux and Reinbacher are far from being NHL ready and available.

Kent Hughes just loves facilitating trades to improve other Eastern Conference teams. It's like he's into GMing on Hard Mode when he hasn't finished the tutorial levels yet.

If Washington aims to swap Mantha's contract (5.7M x 1 year) for Garland (4.95M x 3 years), here’s my humble take on how the Habs could help broker a 3-way deal involving Armia (3.4M x 2 years) :

Mantha + BOS/COL's 2025 2nd <=> Armia + MIN's 2024 3rd

Armia + COL/BOS's 2025 2nd + MIN's 2024 3rd <=> Garland

Net results:

- Washington : Saves 800K by acquiring Garland, all the while avoiding to pay up a 1st round pick to shed Mantha's contract.

- Vancouver : Saves 1.55M (x 2 years); adds 2nd and 3rd round picks to facilitate further trades to bolster the Canucks' blue line.

- Montreal : Adds 2.4M in a cap crunch year, but saves 3.4M when the cap rises the following year, hence the picks swap. Mantha potentially traded at TDL, with retention, but this would entail Pearson and Monahan can be dealt without retention by using cap dump(s).

Why don’t we just take Mantha and try to extract the value for taking the camp dump…
Why do Vancouver move Garland for that package…

Did you work on the acquisition of Calgary's 1st?

In witch way ?
No player likes be sent packing every year. The moves are horrendous on players and families, even if the player were to know he is coming back as an UFA, which is a nice pipe dream of a player providing our team with 4 or more 1st round picks...

i wasn't serious about next season. That said i am one of the few that would keep and re-sign him for 3 seasons. The guy is a positive addition to this young roster, he plays well, wins face offs....I don't care he was injured a lot in the past, past is nothing else then past

Washington doesn't want to pay a 1st (or equivalent prospect) to move Mantha, they would have done so this summer if they did. Mantha has been on the trade block since last season to create cap space.

Vancouver wants to move Garland and are ready to take player in return that still save them ~2m of cap space. They also apparently want that player to be a dmen, so no Armia. Washington wasn't the only team interested on Garland, everybody is failing at moving salary.
