Obviously something needs to give before end Nov / early Dec (?) or Pinto can’t play for this season is not mistaken.

With strong start Sens have all leverage and can sit back, unless Pinto’s willing to sit it out. I still can’t see Sens dealing him, but let’s assume they would be willing…. what do the Habs have the Sens covet other than Caufield?

Dorion needs to make the playoffs, Dvorak & Savard aren’t the answers I don’t think

Not really. Pinto's AAV for the season increases every day he sits out because the salary will cover fewer games. Ottawa also needs to make a move to sign him. A strong start may drive Pinto to lower his number, but Ottawa needs to do something sooner rather than later.

People won’t like this, but I’d include Xhekaj in a package for Pinto. Arber is a rare bread that brings extra value.

The habs desperately need nhl ready, young talent. Around the league, pinto seems to be the only player possibly available that fits that.

Acquiring Pinto would be a smart move, the kind of move that would compliment the acquisition of Newhook and quickly make up for the Dach injury. A depth move. A culture move.

Of course you shouldn’t expect Hughes to acquire Pinto. Not a former client, not his son’s former teammate. Can’t expect him to be on their radar. :sarcasm:

I’ve mentioned Pinto a few times before this - I think he’d be a terrific addition to the core, even made a thread about it on the main goads but Ottawa fans don’t want to move him. Although as I said in that thread, each team has what the other needs - Habs need a big young center, Sens need to unload cap space and would be easier/preferable to get some assets rather than give them up. I’d like to see Hughes work his magic here, a 6’3, 200 lb two way center that can score and is team controlled would be ideal.

Gorton is watching Kravtsov's hockeydb page like a hawk though, waiting for the perfect moment to strike

Begs the question about how Hughes will deal with the extra cap room from placing Dach on LTIR.

Another Monahan type trade for a first rounder?

What would it cost to acquire Pinto?
I suspect very, very high. I'm willing to pay anything not names Hutson, Guhle, Dach, Suzuki, Caufield, Slaf, Newhook. Everything else is fair game.

Plus Ottawa doesn't cap space, so I presume a trade would have to be for futures.

Not many teams need cap space so bad they’ll trade big to open it because not many teams have big cap contracts to acquire at this time… other than the Sens

I haven’t checked every team’s cap situation but since the cap did not go up significantly this season, I was under the impression that most teams do not have significant cap room.

Now’s a good time for a move as the Habs are in a position to take on a big contract. If they wait til the deadline, there will be many more suitors available to counterparts given evidently how only a fraction of a player’s cap hit will apply at that time.

But what players are left unsigned at this point for teams to be in cap desperation?

I don't know. Both good players yes, but hard to give up Xhekal

The issue is not him not being his "client" but trading within the division with the senators.

Oooff... I'm not sure I see Pinto's upside as being worth moving X + for.

As you point out, X is trending towards a very rare breed of player, one that would be near impossible to replace if he does indeed grow into a reliable everyday top 4 player.

I don't see Pinto's upside overtaking Suzuki, Dach or Newhook, and with Beck, Mesar, Kapanen, Davidson giving us a decent shot at another middle 6 C roster player over the next 2-4 yrs (& add perhaps our '24 1st to that list), I'm not sure the profile he represents is worth giving up the potential X has for us... Even if obviously he's a more valuable asset 1:1.

And, perhaps most of all, X's unique qualities are not something you'd want to see traded to a division rival lol

Pass for me

Matheson not because I want him out but because Guhle, Xhekaj, Harris are part of the rebuild.

Unless a team figuratively offers the Moon for Matheson with term, I think he will likely be kept until his UFA year (2026) to mentor the young RFA and ELC defensemen, especially with Savard likely gone by TDL 2025.

Mantha seems like a very possible candidate.

Caps need that cap space if they are going to bolster their chance at making playoffs...

Would set them up to make a push to sign Kane, especially if they cleared out Mantha's cap hit with no retention.

Kane won't sign with Crapitals, he wants to win not win the lottery.
Mantha sucks - they better attach a 1st if they want to move him.
