Problem with all those guys except Pettersson is that they are not better than what we already have.
Zegras at this point offensively is equal to Suzuki.

The others are just there to get more depth so the habs can ship players out to make the quantity for quality deal. The unfortunate part is the habs dont have a lot of quality.
I agree.

The Habs do need offensive talent, but they should only offer a lot for a great player. They already have several good players. They're lacking great ones.
Habs need quality players to deal.to acquire great ones. There's not many prospects the Habs have that fit that and the ones that do the Habs need.

Seeing how strong we will become on D, I think I'd start focusing on maybe trading some D prospects for a young forward with upside, seems to be the way to go for us.

Maybe something around for a Dvorsky type/caliber of prospect or even target one of the many young forwards Buffalo prospects
Well, we are in a good spot here.

I think we can safely identify Guhle, Reinbacher and Hutson as a top D core going forward.

There wont be enough room for all of Struble, Harris, Xhekaj, Trudeau, Barron, Mailloux, Engstrom etc...

At some points we will deal from a position of strenght there.

Mailloux + 2024 1st + Calgary 1st, for example, is a good package of quality pieces for a team liquidating and starting a rebuild.

It would be a good package, IMO, but that should be Mailloux + top-10 protected 2024 1st (which becomes 2024 2nd + unprotected 2025 1st, in such a case, if top-10) + CAL 1st in whatever year it ends up being.

I do think this is solid for a rebuilding team.

Would you offer that for Keller?

I definitely would. As much as Caufield is an off wing scoring winger on the left side, Keller is an off wing scoring winger on the right side.

Just having an elite scorer for both Suzuki and Dach would turbo charge our offense and having all four of Suzuki, Dach, Caufield and Keller on the PP would slay opponents.

Just how good do you think a top-6 of:

Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Kelller
Caufield - Dach - Roy

could be in three years?

How would anyone know what he is like in the room? Zegras is an elite player. 65 points with only 2 other good forwards on the team and 1 was a rookie. But they have a lot of good prospects. Zegras should be putting up 100 pts soon.
would be great to get him the cost??? but young stud

start up the Zegras thread "coming to MTL"

Lol Arizona isn't trading keller, & this isn't getting him. Arizona is stacked with 1st round picks and 2nd round picks, they have like 8 more next two years. No one wants Mailloux, he doesn't have value to other teams right now. It's why so many here put him in trade

However defensively, it's not even close.

Zegras has done nothing at this point in his career that would want me to ship off a massive package to acquire him. Soft perimeter player that wants to be on magazine covers. He belongs in LA. I want guys willing to bleed for a W. Dangles are pretty, but they don't win you games when things get tough. Just IMO of course

I am not sure Keller is the type of profile i would aim for but surely he is worth the package we are talking about.

Value wise, i think he is in the same sphere as Connor or Zegras.

All this from your calls to GMs last night, or just your opinion? Would be better presented as such rather than as a (falsely) immutable fact. Just saying.

Of course, I could be dreaming about the possibility of landing Keller in a trade, but I am taking into account his 7M+ contract with little revenue from attendance at the University arena and offseason suggestions that Keller wants out of ARI because of everlasting uncertainty around the team, whether it is how long the rebuild will continue to taker whether the teamwillremain where it is short of an arena deal.

Zegras, Connor, and Keller aren’t the type of players the Habs should consider to acquire if they would trade Slafkovsky. Slafkovsky is far too valuable, you see.

I would want to keep Slafkovsky when acquiring such players. The price paid should be from D and futures.

Tbh i think Hutson might be the guy out for a deal, on the left side we have too many prospects, Hutson could get us a huge return (If a GM thinks he's really the next Makar) AND there is a lot of question marks because of his size and skating.

I dont see us moving any young players this season, especially not from our defense. I think Hughes is more interested in seeing how our defense shakes out before moving any young defensemen out.

The time to move a young defenseman is when you're confident that they aren't a peice of the defense going forward. That could be as soon as next summer, likely the one after imo.

Honestly, even if Hutson became the next Makar, if the return is legitimately similar, only at a different position, with our depth at LD, both playing and still prospects, I think we can recover from losing the next Makar.

Matheson, Guhle, Xhekaj, Harris, Trudeau.

Engstrom is also a lefty, but I consider him depth on the right side because he plays RD.

Reinbacher, Engstrom, Mailloux, Barron, Kovacevic

Matheson - Reinbacher
Guhle - Mailloux
Xhekaj - Engstrom

Just trying to figure out what exactly Zegras, Connor and Keller did in their draft+1 years that was so much better than what Slaf did this past year.

You go off on Habs fans in the Michkov thread to shut their mouths and be careful about eating crow. What's the difference there and here? Your subjective opinion that Michkov will be a stud and Slaf is a failure. For the record, I abstain from celebrating Michkov's slow start, because I still believe in him. I still believe in Slaf too. There is no one on this site that I hope eats crow more than you.

Waiting for your justification for the hate and comparison of Zegras, Connor and Keller incoming. The never ending argument. God I can't wait for the season to begin.

It's hard to see another team paying a lot of anything for Price. Since the last lockout the cap floor has become a joke, it's a non issue for most teams. And Price has I think ... 4 more seasons? That's a lot.

Right now Price's contract is not a nuisance to the Habs. But maybe Hughes is planning on Gallagher LTIRing in a year or two, at which point it would become an issue.
Price's contract means either we go into the season 10.5m under the cap which is less then ideal if we want to compete, or we have to constantly deal with overages. That's pretty much the definition of a nuisance.

Also since the cap is expected to rise significantly over the next few years, that means the floor will also rise, and Arizona is set to lose 13.5m in LTIRed players from their cap after this year, so they will certainly be looking at adding a LTIRed player like Price.

Hutson has definite home run potential as a play-driving option on the back end, always applying pressure on and conflating opposing D structures that defend against the Habs' offense.

IMO, Hutson will generate at least 5 scoring opportunities per game at even strength. If Montreal can combine with a 20% conversion rate on both those opportunities and on their PP,itwillmean 2goals a gammon the bag before anything else takes place.

Hutson is very appealing because he is like few players in this league (NHL), but adding an elite C or winger could also help complete the offense and get themes out of both Suzuki and Dach at C at the same time.

For an elite C or W,Hutson would be an unfortunate player to have to dispose of, but a legitimate ask from our prospective trade partner, along with a 1st round pick, or two, depending on the forward being acquired.

A power forward in his early prime and capable of putting up a PPG, for example, would be worth the 2nd 1st round pick.

Mailloux and two first round picks, perhaps?

Guhle - Reinbacher
Hutson - Engstrom
Xhekaj - Barron/Harris
Harris/Barron, Trudeau

I hear what you are saying... but none of Keller, Connor etc (& definitely not Zegras) are in the same stratosphere as Makar.

At 24, already a Norris & Smythe winner & over ppg for his career...

He's generational talent.

If Hutson becomes anything close to that it would have been a massive blunder to have moved him for the guys being discussed here, even with our strong D-pool.
